Overview

The NS WAV series electric violin provides an affordable option for the serious professional and student player. The WAV Violin is passive and so does not require a battery.

The WAV 5 is a five-string version of the popular NS WAV series electric violin. Building on the same world-class design and workmanship of the original 4-string WAV, the WAV5 brings the extended range of the five-string violin to market at an affordable price.

Since its introduction two years ago, violinists of all abilities have hailed the NS WAV series as one of the most responsive, playable violins in its class. The WAV5′s carved maple body keeps its center of gravity close to the player’s torso, giving perfect balance and maximum control. The adjustable shoulder rest molds to fit the contours of the shoulder for optimum grip and comfort. Fitted with the optional Balanced Shoulder Rest, the WAV5 rides almost weightlessly on a counter-weighted arm, freeing the musician’s upper body and providing sure-footed support for even the most high-impact playing.

The WAV5′s streamlined neck and fingerboard enable blindingly fast fingering while preserving traditional reference points at the scroll and the upper bout. By raising or lowering the adjustable rock maple bridge, players can set the strings to the height they desire—high action like a classical violin or lower fiddle-style action for effortless, quick response. The tail-mounted tuners allow for precise adjustments and offer “set it and forget it” stability unmatched by traditional tuning pegs.

The WAV5 matches its thoroughbred performance with exquisite sound quality. Built around NS Design’s Polar™ pickup system, the WAV5 delivers a nearly flawless signal that raises the bar for clarity and natural tone. The instrument sounds good on everything from small guitar amplifiers to full-blown sound systems and has enough power to drive almost any preamp. The passive pickup system does not require a battery, making the WAV5 truly a “plug-and-play” instrument.

The addition of the lower fifth string to the NS WAV series presents an exciting opportunity, not just to performers and students who wish to explore the creative possibilities of an extended range, but also to string educators who want to lead violin, viola, and cello students from a single instrument. As one of the most affordable five-string violins currently on the market, the WAV5 is expected to take its place alongside the original four-string WAV violin as a top choice among among music teachers, reinforcing NS Design’s commitment to innovation in music education.

Experienced Musician (but Beginner Violinist) Loves This Thing

By Daryl McClendon

from New York, NY

I'm new to violin but not to instruments because I've received formal training in three saxophones, guitar, piano and am self-trained on keys, electronic wind instruments and voice. I needed something that I could play with or without an amplifier.. something that would allow me to express myself without waking or disturbing the neighbors through paper-thin Manhattan walls.. While you cannot do "silent play" natively, preamps are getting smaller and more efficient every day. If you are an experienced musician and have a discerning ear, this violin can fool you. It is not like those "violin-shaped objects" that are sold cheaply and made cheaply- it has a very good sound. I use MiniCube from Roland (to practice aloud) or Avid Fast Track (to practice quietly) and am doing just fine. I think the shoulder rest is just fine. I think having less external controls is just fine, as I can control the volume using the bow. I wouldn't recommend getting a cable that comes out of the back of the violin at a right angle- Monster sells one that is L-shaped, securable with epoxy or tape rather than wrapping cable around shoulders or arms and is gold-plated and shielded. Depending on your playing style, gravity alone may do. It is a strong, reliable instrument with a non-cheap feel to it. Check online for videos from individuals playing the instrument and you'll see the broad range of what it's capable of. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Excellent Deal!

By Stephanie Woody

from Virginia Beach

I purchased the Trans Red 5-string. The pickup is excellent and, even though it's under the body, it holds the cables very well. I still wrap it once or twice around the shoulder rest to ensure that I don't come unplugged in concert. The C-string wobbles a bit in pitch if I use too much pressure with the bow, but I'm learning that my volume switches control my volume, not my bow technique, so much. The sound out of it is awesome, very clear, clean, and way better than my acoustic, as far as extra noise. I used to clip a pick-up to the bridge of my acoustic, but it was too sensitive and picked up a lot of bumps and pops or bow hick-ups that the NS does not. My only real complaint is the shoulder rest. It's attached by a single curvey bar that allows the shoulder rest to teeter around it while I'm playing and I'm sure to either strip the screws that tighten it in place or the actual piece that holds it, before long. If they could have made a 2-prong shoulder rest that would hold it in place better, I'd have given this 5 stars. This instrument is great for beginning on full electric (and 5-strings).
