  • Sturdy but heavy, minor design issues

As reviewed by The Original on 1/18/2010

I travel with a laptop and an Akai APC 40, so I need stands like these. I have one already (a Serato, I think), and after I got the APC40 I bought this Guitar Center stand. The plusses of this stand: Man, it's sturdy and stable, a great attribute when you're setting up on top of turntables in a crowded DJ booth. The width of the upper supports (under your electronics) and the feet (stabiliszing the entire construct) are a welcome difference from the fairly flimsy, more expensive competition. The price is excellent, especially considering the quality of the assembled stand. The minuses: The stability comes with weight. This may not matter to you if you're getting to gigs by car or not traveling at all; if you have to carry gear through airports and other places, you may notice the extra weight. I do. The crossbar/wingnut arrangement is a little tough for me to handle in a gig environment; rather than having the crossbar rods extend through the holes in the supports, the wingnuts have the threaded extensions to hold the side supports together whilst you wrassle the crossbars on to the threads. I find this difficult to use in a normal gig environment (no flat surfaces in a crowded DJ booth to lay out the pieces), compared to the opposite method. That may just be my own quirk, though. Altogether an excellent stand for the money.
