Known as the comfortable cousin of the StingRay, it's the Music Man Sterling with 2 pickups!

The Sterling's shape is similar to the StingRay, but shorter and narrower, while the neck remains basically the same (34" scale, 11" radius). It also features hot rodded electronics: active 3-band preamp, 2 MusicMan humbuckers with hum canceling phantom coils, and unique 5-way switching (individual humbuckers, both humbuckers, and selections of tapped coils from both pickups). Volume, treble, mid, bass controls. Includes hardshell case. Schaller BM tapered-post tuners.

  • The "Chosen One"

As reviewed by Bassman Bob on 3/30/2010

I've been an active musician for over 35 years, and recently purchased a gorgeous Music Man Sterling 4HH in Tobacco Burst and maple fretboard. I've owned nothing but Fender P and J basses all my life, and they are great guitars (I still own three), but I always wanted to get a Sterling because of it's great feel and tone. I can say I absolutely love the craftsmanship, looks and wide variety of sounds that come out of this beauty! With the double H's you can get the "growl", the awesome "mids" or the funky ranges needed for slapping and popping. I play my bass through Ampeg tube heads, and the sound is AMAZING! If you can afford the extra bucks, buy this bass. You will love it!

  • My last bass

As reviewed by Bill M. on 12/31/2009

This is it. This is the last bass I'll ever "need" to buy. The tone is classic MM and with the 2nd humbucker, your tones are virtually limitless. The bass is WELL made too. I brought it to my repair guy for a setup and I'll quote him... "I've never seen such good fret-work right from the factory". They were literally perfect. The bass plays fast and the neck finish is amazing. I have never played a more comfortable bass. I spent time comparing the Stingray, Sterling, and the cheaper import versions marketed as the "Sterling by MM" brand. This bass won and is definitely worth the extra $$ for the US version. This was clear before I ever plugged in either bass. The Sterling (US) sounded pure without amplification (a sign of a good instrument). A close look at the bass reveals details and craftsmanship that are rare for a production bass. The finish is beautiful and the hardware is top-notch. I love the truss "Wheel" that makes for super-easy tweaks to the rod. You cannot go wrong with this bass. It's a substantial chunk of change but well worth every penny. Good luck and happy thumpin!

  • Excellent Instrument

As reviewed by MAstratman333 on 1/30/2008

This bass is definitely my favorite out of all the basses I've played. It's actually surprisingly lightweight, which is great if you are a smaller player like myself. The two bucks on it sound great. The pickup selector is very innovative, and much like a guitar, when changing between the neck and bridge pickup, you will get that sharper bridge tone, and that more warm, round tone from the neck bucker. The neck action is very fast, and it's easy to play through fast riffs and even bass solos. There really are no flaws to the bass except the fact that the price is a major chunk out of your wallet. If you can afford it, you're in for a treat. I DO NOT OWN THIS BASS. P.S. This is the exact bass Johnny Christ of Avenged Sevenfold uses.
