I've been an active musician for over 35 years, and recently purchased a gorgeous Music Man Sterling 4HH in Tobacco Burst and maple fretboard. I've owned nothing but Fender P and J basses all my life, and they are great guitars (I still own three), but I always wanted to get a Sterling because of it's great feel and tone. I can say I absolutely love the craftsmanship, looks and wide variety of sounds that come out of this beauty! With the double H's you can get the "growl", the awesome "mids" or the funky ranges needed for slapping and popping. I play my bass through Ampeg tube heads, and the sound is AMAZING! If you can afford the extra bucks, buy this bass. You will love it!
This is it. This is the last bass I'll ever "need" to buy. The tone is classic MM and with the 2nd humbucker, your tones are virtually limitless. The bass is WELL made too. I brought it to my repair guy for a setup and I'll quote him... "I've never seen such good fret-work right from the factory". They were literally perfect. The bass plays fast and the neck finish is amazing. I have never played a more comfortable bass. I spent time comparing the Stingray, Sterling, and the cheaper import versions marketed as the "Sterling by MM" brand. This bass won and is definitely worth the extra $$ for the US version. This was clear before I ever plugged in either bass. The Sterling (US) sounded pure without amplification (a sign of a good instrument). A close look at the bass reveals details and craftsmanship that are rare for a production bass. The finish is beautiful and the hardware is top-notch. I love the truss "Wheel" that makes for super-easy tweaks to the rod.
You cannot go wrong with this bass. It's a substantial chunk of change but well worth every penny. Good luck and happy thumpin!
I (luckily) picked up this bass, used, last year at a local GC. I've been playing thin-necked basses for a while and as much as the classic MM Ray is a 'standard' for MM fans... this thing blew me away. Smaller body, thinner neck (granted, the Ray Slo-Special does have a thinner neck too), and having the 2 piezos with a 5 position switch does give a multitude of tonal options. In response to an earlier post, another great thing about the tone selector is that is is noiseless when switching between positions 1 through 5 unlike some other basses where you get a click or pop sound when switching. I do not own any other MusicMan basses and can only speak for this one when I say it's solid. It holds tune (the tuning posts are much fatter than other basses), it's sturdy and well built. The one I play has a rosewood fretboard which sounds much different than the maple ones. I play this bass through a MarkBass CMD102P combo with DR Lowrider strings and was once humbled by a well-seasoned professional regarding the tonality of this particular bass. He came up to me after a set and said "wow, that Stingray really purrs, man" - When I told him it was a Sterling, he was shocked. For those of you who want the same 'feel' but are on a budget... The Sterling by MusicMan SUB basses are pretty damn nice too! At their low price point, the MM name, look and feel.. they stand strong next to the other MM pieces.
Go give it a try, but let your bass pick you and not the other way around. You'll know.
