Ordered new Sterling 5 HH after watching Youtube reviews of this bass. When it arrived action was very high and the truss rod would not budge. Called Ernie Ball, one of their techs talked me through putting pressure on the neck to loosen the rod. Still had string buzz which was due to a high fret. After having fretboard leveled I have to say this is one of the best basses I have ever owned. Super fast neck, lightweight, all kinds of different sounds available and really cuts through the mix with my band. This bass replaces some boutique basses I have owned that were much more expensive, this would blow them out of the water now that bugs are worked out. Nice job Musicman!! On a side note, before I corrected the truss rod thing Guitar Center offered to quicly replace the bass if I could not get it to work. Nice customer service Thanks
I recently picked up a Sterling 5 used, a 2009 model in Pacific Blueburst /rosewood fingerboard. This is one amazing bass, the tone and playability are unmatched. I have played bass professionally for 33 years and this is my last instrument, as personally I don't think I could ever find anything better. Going from finger style to slap is amazing as there is not need to increase volume levels or adjust EQ settings. This bass is so responsive, and does take a little getting used to because of the overall power and punch of the low end, as this bass can really throw the thunder on the low B and E. Over the years I have played Fenders, Peaveys, Carvins, Cort Artisans, and even at one time a Kubicki X-factor, a superior progressive bass of extremely high quality, but all of these basses pale in comparison to this bass. As I said before this is my last bass. Try one, and see why so many bass players are proud to be a part of the MM (Musicman) family. My only regret is why it took me so long to ever try one, many years of amazing tone and enjoyment missed out on.
I previously owned a Musicman Stingray 4 string. I was desperate in need of a 5 string bass and Guitar Center worked out a nice trade for me. I traded plus some cash and got a 5 string Sterling. It is really nice nice of GC to work with struggling musicians like me. Although, sometimes I miss my stingray becasue musicman sterling or stingrays are both keepers. The only issue I have with this sterling bass is that it is very sensitive to temperature changes. I get occassional fret buzz when season changes. Then I just do adjustments and it is perfect again. I use my other basses for practice, but my sterling is ALWAYS used for gigs. There's something about Musicman tone that it sounds so right on stage. The tone cuts through the whole band. The tone is very definitive when you play along with a band. It also has its own character. You always know if a bassist is using a musicman becasue the tone is very identifiable and unique. I also had the chance to contact musicman customer support. they are friendly and helpful. Good job Musicman manufacturing and support. Excellent boutique bass. Right price.
