The first Moogfest was a one-night party held in New York City in 2004, and like Moog Music itself, Moogfest has grown exponentially since its beginnings.

The tenor of Moogfest 2017 was halfway between electronic music festival and tech conference with this year’s debuting equipment vying for center stage, while electrifying performances and demonstrations by Flying Lotus, Animal Collective, Talib Kweli, Gotye and dozens of others continuously wrested it back. It was a magnificent presentation of music’s theoretical possibilities for the future, the latest achievements in technology-based musical instruments, and most importantly, musicians using that technology to create art.

Lecturers included Michael Stipe, Dr. Kate Shaw, Dave Smith and many thought leaders in a wide variety of musical, artistic, technological and philosophical disciplines. From an invitation-only cocktail party to a four-day sold-out event, Moogfest has grown exponentially, and it is certain to remain one of the year’s most hotly anticipated events among audio engineers, instrument manufacturers, and professional and aspirational musicians.

Moog’s big announcement for next year was their intention to turn their design and manufacturing expertise to a reintroduction of the Moog Synthesizer IIIc in a special limited run, but all eyes were on their great achievement of the first half of this year, the SUBsequent 37 CV. The SUBsequent 37 CV features 4 CV and 2 Gate outputs (all assignable), a very big deal for synthesists. Artfully and ergonomically laid into a beautiful aluminum and hardwood chassis with an upgraded keybed, the SUBsequent 37 CV’s limited 2000-unit run is sure to be depleted before year’s end.

Moog is poised for another year of innovation and discovery, as well as another year at the absolute pinnacle of electronic music instrument manufacturing. If you missed Moogfest this year, join Moog and Musician’s Friend in North Carolina next year. We’ll save you a seat.
