Overview

The MF-107 FreqBox is different from other effects. The effected sound is not a processed version of your input signal, but the sound of the input signal modulating an internal oscillator. It contains a VCO with continuously variable waveshape, and the capacity to modulate that Oscillator in the following ways:

- the VCO can be hard synced by the input signal

- The VCO can be frequency modulated (FM) by the input signal

- The VCO frequency can be modulated by an envelope follower which tracks the dynamics of the input signal

- The Amplitude of the VCO also tracks the dynamics of the input signal

Hard sync is a classic analog synthesis technique where the start of an oscillator's cycle can be reset by another. The oscillator being synced takes on the frequency characteristics of the other oscillator, and when its frequency is swept, it reinforces the harmonics of the fundamental frequency. In the case of the FreqBox, the input signal is used to reset the FreqBox's VCO.

FM is a technique used to get really rich sounds from simple waveforms. The type of FM used in the FreqBox pedal is linear FM. Sounds range from gong or bell-like tones to sizzly sweeps.

The FreqBox, like all moogerfoogers, works with any instrument-to-line-level input. In addition to the panel controls there are control inputs for use with expression pedals or control voltages and control outputs for interconnecting moogerfoogers like you would a modular synth.

The FreqBox effects pedal can provide some really unusual processing to all types of signals - guitars, synths, drum sounds, vocals or wind instruments allowing you to enter previously unexplored sonic territory.

Specifications
  • Front Panel Controls:
Frequency: sets the frequency of the VCO.
Wave: Morphs the VCO waveform from Triangle to Sawtooth to Square to skinny pulse.
Sync On/Off: Enables/ Disables Hard sync of the VCO by the audio input signal.
Env. Amount: Sets the amount of modulation of the VCO frequency by the Envelope
    Follower.
FM Amount: Sets the amount of frequency modulation of the VCO by the audio input signal.
Mix: Sets the blend of input signal and VCO signal
Drive: Sets the input sensitivity and gain of the effect when active. Half to full drive amount adds overdrive.
Output level: Sets the output level of the effect when active.
Bypass Switch: Bypass LED is red when effect is off, and green when effect is on. The MF-107 uses a high quality buffered bypass ” when in bypass, the input is disconnected from the effects' electronics.

    I/O
Input and output connections are on 1/4" jacks.
Audio Input: accepts instrument level to line level inputs.
Freq: Accepts EP-1 expression pedal, or -5 to +5V Control Voltage to set the frequency of the VCO. Input voltage is added to position of the front panel Frequency control.
Wave: Accepts EP-1 expression pedal, or -5 to +5V Control Voltage to set the waveform of the VCO. Input voltage is added to position of the front panel Wave control.
Env. Amt: Accepts EP-1 expression pedal, or 0 to +5V Control Voltage to set the amount of envelope follower modulation of the VCO frequency. Input voltage is added to position of the front panel Env. Amount control.
FM Amt: Accepts EP-1 expression pedal, or 0 to +5V Control Voltage to set the amount of frequency modulation of the VCO by the audio input. Input voltage is added to position of the front panel FM Amount control.
Mix: Accepts EP-1 expression pedal, or 0 to +5V Control Voltage to set the waveform of the VCO. Input voltage is added to position of the front panel Mix control.
Audio Out: Supplies the output signal.
Env Out: Outputs the unconditioned Envelope Follower Control Voltage signal.
Osc Out: Outputs the wave-shaped VCO signal as a +/-2.5V Control Voltage signal.

Confusing at first...but

By Dave Stanfill

from Manchester, NH

Comments about MF-107 moogerfooger FreqBox Effects Pedal:

This Moogerfooger Freqbox MF 107 can be used for so much, once you learn how to use it that is. The Moog Freqbox is cool for me cause I use it to make sound effects at particular times. You can also kinda use it as a fuzz like pedal when you turn up the FM Amount. I wouldn't recommend this pedal to the average guitarist but for you weirdo and synth players (whats the difference... heh just kidding..) this thing is a tool to make your sound you. Might I also add this thing has an oscillator out jack where you turn the frequency nob and it changes the pitch, similar to a theremin noise, and I have to say its amazing with a short delay timed reverse delay effect, sounds like little ringing noises everywhere Yes i am.. .. a synth noob and it is slightly confusing at first but I love it. Probably my second favorite effect, next to Moogs ring modulator, The freqbox is as it sounds a box of crazy noisy amazing surprises.

Unleash your Freq

By EMwhite

from NJ

Comments about MF-107 moogerfooger FreqBox Effects Pedal:

Not a standard distortion pedal. This Moogerfooger features two unique sections, a voltage controlled oscillator, similar to those found in other Moog Synthesizers such as the Voyager or Little Phatty, and an Envelope follower tunable by coarse and fine degrees with frequency modulation. I've used mine both as an additional (4th) Oscillator to my Moog Old School Voyager simply by connecting the Pitch CV out into the 107's FREQ in and then feeding the 'hot' OSC out back into the Voyager's filter. Or as standalone, as played with my Fender Jazz Bass. Unleash a menacing crunch or blend just a hint of undertones, all tunable for direct SYNC to your tone, or as tuned/modulated. This is perhaps the most misunderstood (but powerful) Moogerfooger to date. There are plenty of distortion pedals and bit crunchers on the out there today but nothing quite like this.

Freqin hot!!

By Drew

from Albuquerque, NM

Comments about MF-107 moogerfooger FreqBox Effects Pedal:

Bob Moog was a conduit of the potentail sounds traditional instruments were unable to produce. This box is an honorable example of the legacy and influence his modular systems left on the music of the past four or more decades. If you are wanting to become obsessive about analog tonal properties, the Freq.Box will assist you. This is not a box for those creating or copying the candy coated, run of the mill, placated sounds that have been repetitiously overflowing from the minds and hands of pop-culture. Buy this box if you are ready to put down the spoon feed garbage and push your own creative potentails. May Bob Moog rest in peace!

Wierd but Cool

By Brian

from Dallas, TX

Comments about MF-107 moogerfooger FreqBox Effects Pedal:

If you ever heard the song Edison's Medicine/Tesla and you hear the radio waves being manipulated I believe they used this product. I describe it as Crazy Cool. Don't bother getting an expression petal for it, you can't tell the difference when you use it. But it does provide effects you've never heard before, its hard to describe the sounds it puts out, you just need to play it to understand. But everyone who I played it for thought it was Wild (in a good way)!

Crazy box!

By Justin

from WA

Comments about MF-107 moogerfooger FreqBox Effects Pedal:

This is an absolutely crazy effect pedal. It is a bit intimidating at first, and takes some serious time to be able to pull usable sounds out of it (for me). But if you spend some time learning it will be extremely rewarding for it's wackyness. Fun stuff!
