MX-400 Quilted Ash Burl

By darryll collins

from lex ky

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

went looking for a new acoustic electric on a budget at a local store. tried several in the acoustic room. i picked up an ibanez, yamaha, ibanez talman, epiphone, fender, fender stratacoustic etc. just wasnt feeling any of them. when it comes to electric im a fender guy, playin bluesy/rock and grunge/ alt rock. was disappointed that i didnt care for any of the fender acoustics. just wasnt feeling it. this mitchells finish caught my eye several times and the fact its a concert style slim acoustic with a cutaway. quilted ash can be found on many other guitars. but the specific patterns on this one is just much more gorgeous! i also love the way the tuners have a black coating on them. shine and reflection is really just too much of a distraction in my opinion. anyway, i picked this guitar up, reluctant as ive never heard of the brand before. and it was that moment of instant love. the action is the lowest i had come across and the fastest as well. it feels much like an electrics action. amazed. its thin, very light, great for playin sitting or standing. its sounds very great, nice ring, deep base and crisp treble come from within. i have read and been told it comes from the X bracing inside thats usually reserved for very high end guitars. it sounds just as great plugged in and the built in tuner works fantastic. everyone that i know who plays just love ps this guitar and wants to play it anytime im not. i have nothing negative to say about this guitar, which is astounding since im ocd, any slight thing that seems out of order turns me off and i go looking for any kind of imperfection. its a burden quite often. i really just cant believe, what you get in this guitar for the price. it feels like a guitar priced twice as much. ive been playing it every spare moment i have for 4 straight days. easy to say i wont ever have a need to shop for another acoustic until this one just breaks down and cant be played anymore and i have no desire to pick up an electric for a long while with this one. when i do itll be a mim fender strat hss ;).

Review Update

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for 6 months now, as you can see from my original review. I still love this guitar more than any Ive owned before, including electrics. This guitar has held up perfectly. No breakdowns of any kind, everything is still as I just got it. And I play it a lot. I have even sanded down the saddle quite a bit to lower the action and its even more amazing than before! The only thing I need to do is get some polish to fill in all the pick scratches. And this is not a guitar you want to have a pick guard on so that is perfectly acceptable. Its still safe to say, I'll likely not pick up another acoustic until a day comes when I could pick up a really nice Taylor for 3 times the money. I play the following on this and have no problems, plugged and unplugged, sounding amazing: aerosmith, mb20, smashing pumpkins, soundgarden, days of the new, foo fighters, metallica, cold and other various rock, grunge and hard rock music. don't hesitate, pick up which ever mx400 guitar youre considering and end your journey right away.

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Went to Guitar Center and tried out a bunch of $300-$500 acoustic guitars. I've been playing since 1970 and had a lot of great guitars. All the main brands (Fender, Ibanez, Martin, etc.), didn't feel right. The salesman brought me this Mitchell MX400...WOW. The action is great and it feels and plays like a Strat. I don't care what the label says. When it feels right, that's the one to get. It has a Burl Ash body, sides and back along with a hickory neck with rosewood fret board and bridge. It also has a built in tuner, pickup, and volume control with 3 band EQ. Never heard of this brand but for the price, this is a great guitar.

    Great guitar for the price

    By theguy

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Ive been playing for 5 years and this was a great step up from my old acoustic, this guitar had everything i wanted, steel string, full size, thin body, acoustic-electric, and a beautiful finish. I play for my school masses and i love showing off this beautiful guitar at the masses. This guitar is especially loud even when its not plugged into an amplifier. It even sounds great when plugged into an amplifier. The price is great and definatly worth it. Even though mitchell isnt a very popular guitar brand, it sounds and feels so much better than an epiphone, gibson, ibanez, or even a taylor. Buy this guitar, you wont regret it.

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Features: Being a beginner guitar player I am not entirely sure what the best features for a guitar should be but for me this guitar sounds incredible for the price. Quality & Reliability: This guitar has beautiful wood finish not to mention the sound is spot on. The exotic wood really makes the guitar what it is. Look and feel: The model I have is the natural quilted ash burl that looks beautiful as far as wood is concerned. I just received the guitar in December and is in great shape

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I went in to the Guitar Center by my house looking for a nice acoustic guitar that was right for my size. The employee who was helping us showed me a few, but my eyes kept staring at this beautiful guitar. I tried out the options he showed me and they were all just OK. When I actually played the Mitchell is was love instantly. Still insane about this guitar.

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

its a very beautiful guitar, stays in tune well while using, and when its not, it doesn't take much time to re-tune it at all, just a few minutes and its ready to play again..sometimes its still right in tune. depends on how many days i have n't played it and the warm/cold of the room, like humidity has a lot to do with tune changes of a acoustic guitar. i wish it would have been a little cheaper in price, but its well worth every penny for a instrument of this quality and beauty. it sits right in my arms, im a small guy, so its perfect for me, and im also a beginner with guitar, been drumming for 35 years and wanted to pick up the guitar for helping me with my memory issues, im teaching myself to play, and its perfect for a pro or a beginner, playing shows , or just jamming in the basement, and or doing some recording ..its just a great little guitar. very easy to handle ,its not to heavy, to me its perfect for what i was looking for, i would rec it to everyone to buy one, u get your moneys worth with this beauty..not doubt in my mind.. i would have probably paid a little more for it just to have it. right now so far i have nothing really bad i can say about this guitar, or i would be lying. peace and happy new year from little dave in cleveland.

The initial sound blew me away! It was incredible. To match thr sound the look of the guitar is incredibly sexy as well.
The only negative that I can give this guitar is that the internal tuner is off, however, I have not read the manual yet, and I could just be ignorant of how to use it.
Regardless, I do highly recommend this instrument to you if you are looking for a nice guitar to practice with at home, safely take out and perform with friends, or even put on a show.

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The MX400 is full of surprises. It's a shallow body acoustic, but when you play it unplugged, it's forceful, loud, jangly, and powerful. That really sold me; it projects well for such a small guitar. Neck and action were perfect, and it tunes up and holds tune well. The onboard electric pickup transmits the brassy attitude into your amplifier; you might need to turn it down a bit compared to other guitars. I'm pleased: it will be great for sets where I don't want to use an amp, and it's awesome for practicing because of its volume. And it's beautiful: the woods and the finish are gorgeous to look at, and everyone will notice it.

Im a 57yr old male and have played since age 12 and professionally for 24yrs. Mostly play electric's as a lead guitarist but also enjoy acoustic as well. This is a Great overall value for someone not wanting to
spend a small fortune for an acoustic. The replacement saddle included provides lower string action and sanded mine down about two widths of a 6th string or bottom E. Plays like an electric with sweet sound
unplugged and through an amp as well. Beautiful craftsmanship and the burl wood is so nice to look at.
Nicely done neck and put a set of Phosphor Bronze strings on and plays like a dream! The only reason for
4 out of 5 stars is that it dosent have quite as much sound as a thicker bodied guitar but that's what an amp is for, you can easily adjust for that. Great work Mitchell!

I bought this guitar as a back up for my semi expensive Martin. First off, it is stunningly beautiful. I love the look of this guitar. It sounds much better than I had anticipated and it sounds great plugged in. The action needs a little work for my personal preference, but that is easily rendered. This guitar cost me about an 1/8th of what I paid for my Martin and it will make a perfect back up. Once I get the action the way I like it, I may just use it once in a while for the fun of it. Well done Mitchell... :)

This guitar for the price has got to be the best kept secret. Not only is it appealing to the eye because of the quilted ash, but it really sounds amazing. It's got to be the design and the scalloped bracing. I didn't care much for the strings it came with so I changed them to the Martin Lifespan MSP 6100....wow!! Sounds great amplified too. I use mine through a Fishman Artist LBX amp. The techs at GC were amazing and assisted with the set up. I have to admit, I was blown away with this guitar and the reason I bought it was because of the of 16 reviews I'd read before. I figured 16 people couldn't be wrong so I went for it. I'm so glad I bought this guitar.

Comments about Mitchell MX400 Exotic Wood Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I picked up a Mitchell MX400 back in August '16 when a Guitar Center opened near my place. I had intended to pick up a Yamaha FX but was drawn to the quilted burl ash of the Mitchell. When I picked up the Mitchell it felt very comfortable, didn't seem to bother my shoulder at all. I sat and toyed around with it for about 15 minutes. I felt that the action was a little high and I asked the salesman about having it adjusted. He said they certainly could do that however, Mitchell sets these things up at the factory and the way it is set up now is Mitchell's recommendation and should be kept as such. Being a novice I figured I can take it home and play it a little bit and if I don't like it I can always bring it in later for an adjustment. Over all the sound wasn't bad. I was more impressed with the looks and the feel of the guitar and not with how well it played or how it sounded. However, it did seem a little difficult to play. I chalked this up to me being inexperienced and carried on. Fast forward a few months. Ive been taking lessons for about 6 weeks. Had a few friends and my instructor check out my guitar. Armed with multiple opinions I took it to a locally recommended Luther. Now I had read a number of reviews where people compared this Mitchell to Taylors, and Martins. I thought to myself...nah. Don't get me wrong its a nice guitar but to compare it to one of the above mentioned was a stretch...or so I thought. I brought the Mitchell home from the Luther after he made some serious adjustment and slapped on a fresh set of stings my favorite strings. I was blown away! I could not believe the sound coming out of my previously average guitar. I was truly shocked at what I heard. I focused a bit on my chords and fret hand fingering and again was just floored at how easy this thing now played. I liked and enjoyed this guitar before, now I absolutely love it. Such warm, rich, clear, projecting sound, bright but not too much, and oh so much easier to play. Awesome!
