  In trying out banjos, we've tried everything from low-end to high. This Mitchell looks spectacular with it's flawless cherry-burst style mahogany body and neck, and unique inlays. The resonator on this is incredible. There's no deadness to this thing, and it projects well with a very warm tone. The hardware seems more solid than any of the banjos we've checked in this price range. A case would be nice, but as it's an over-seas made instrument, it's expected to not have one included. Better to skimp on the case than the hardware. My guess is there aren't more of these sold due to the brand name. In foreign made instruments, brand names don't define the quality of an instrument. These are comparable to banjos costing 3x as much.

  Yep Indonesia, that's where its made. I'm a guitar player with over 30 years experience. My Brother-in-Law had a POS Kent 4 string Irish banjo that I fixed and have been messing with for about a year or so... I had some Mackie equipment hanging around that needed a good home so I decided it was time for a 5 string. I went up to Manchester CT Guitar center to see my Bro "The Oliphant Man" and came home with a Mitchell banjo... I read allot about banjos before hand and educated myself .. I have to say that it really came down to the Fender FB54 or a Goodtime 2. I also considered other options but didn't want to spend an arm and a leg... I build guitars and realize what go's into instruments and I'm not afraid to fix things if need be.. So basically all that I needed to do to this Banjo was lower the action by sanding the bridge and tighten the machine heads that were slipping, no big deal.. I do chicken pick so I won't act as if I'm a big shot Banjo player, but I can get down a bit once my fingers get warmed up, still a life time away from perfecting anything... But for anyone looking for a great banjo that really has everything the big boys have then look no farther.. It even has a wood tone ring which it states other wise in the description as aluminum? The Fender FB54 was OK, but the machine heads where junk and the tone ring is aluminum and I feel its the name that carries it at the price its asking... This is a Banjo build for Guitar Center by Mitchell and the craftsmanship is really something compared to many instruments out today that cost thousands more and should be ashamed of themselves for allowing such poor detail... At least its not made in China like the FB54. Not to say there isn't fine things that come out of China but I know for fact that Indonesia really hit the mark on this particular Banjo... My days of pining over $5000 guitars etc is over and brand loyalty isn't at the top of my list. So if your not worried about some dude busting your chops about a Mitchell then go for it! After all its not the instrument, its the player! Earl Scruggs could play a rope on a broom stick and make it sound good... One last thing, if your from CT? Manchester Guitar Center is great! The people that work there are awesome and very helpful and polite. So stop in and see them and have fun!
