For the last 6 years the Dragonfly models from Michael Kelly have been the most in-demand acoustic basses on the market. The newest version (the third edition) has some important upgrades. Michael Kelly started with a dramatic upgrade in the active amplification system. Now you get the Fishman MKAB system, the first pre-amp optimized for acoustic bass. The Dragonfly also features real quilt maple wood on the body. The tone of the maple is brighter, more focused and has added projection. Other upgrades on the Dragonfly 3 are hand scalloped bracing, a double adjustable truss rod and dual graphite reinforcement rods for added neck stability and longevity. Like with all Michael Kelly basses you get improved feel with a 34" scale for the perfect string response. Of course you also get an amazing looking vine style, Dragonfly accented inlay that adorns the fingerboard. It is made from real abalone and pearl for the ultimate in instrument extravagance.

Not Your Grandpa's Acoustic Bass

Comments about Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I've played electric bass for 20+ years, but I've recently wanted to buy an acoustic electric bass for lighter styles of rock and country. At first, I ordered a different (cheaper) brand of AE bass and quickly regretted that. If you want to play this kind of instrument through an amp, you get what you pay for. Therefore, I stepped up to the Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5 string. So far, I'm very happy with it! The fretboard design gets a lot of attention. I gave it 5 stars, but I want to share some things. 1) Unlike other AE basses, the Dragonfly has 1 strap button/pin, which is located on the bottom and doubles as the jack. If you want to use a strap like a regular electric bass, you'll need to install one on the heel of the neck. After watching some online tutorials, I installed it myself. 2) The Fishman pick up is very nice with lots of EQ controls, but test out the balance of the strings through an amp. At first, my top string (G) was much softer than the bottom strings. My local repair guy was able to adjust the pick up under the bridge, though. This didn't affect my 5 star rating because of the price. If you want a perfect amplified acoustic electric bass, you'll need to aim for $1000+. 3) It comes with D'Addario acoustic strings, which were too bright for my taste. I prefer a darker tone quality, and I replaced them with Thomastik Acousticore acoustic strings that have a nylon core (I love them!). All in all, I'm happy with my Dragonfly 5 string. If you are looking for a great sounding AE bass with a cool look, this is it.

Just what I was hoping it would be

Comments about Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I started playing Bass in1961. So I have a bit of experience playing a wide variety of music. Now I am playing with a classical guitar orchestra. We have 16 guitars and 2 acoustic bass guitars. This is so much better than the acoustic bass I was playing. I am very impressed with the intonation above the 12th fret. I can now play some arrangements that I could only play on my 5 string electrics before. It is a bit on the bright side unplugged, so I have to watch my right hand nail length very closely to blend with the guitars in the orchestra. The finish is very nice. Love the scrollwork on the neck. It does project quite well also.
If I were to be picky I would recommend strings that have a more pronounced low end. Of course an acoustic can't give the gut thump that my electrics do. (my rock rig is 16-12's with 4000 Watts.)

    It's NOT a 34" scale

Comments about Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

The neck measures 32" (NOT 34" as documented on the manufacturers website) from the nut to the bridge. The scale length will be an issue mainly for those interested in a 5-string and/or fretless models. The "B" string is very loose and your fingering has to be spot on to be anywhere near in-tune.
