Overview

For the last 6 years the Dragonfly models from Michael Kelly have been the most in-demand acoustic basses on the market. The newest version (the third edition) has some important upgrades. Michael Kelly started with a dramatic upgrade in the active amplification system. Now you get the Fishman MKAB system, the first pre-amp optimized for acoustic bass. The Dragonfly also features real quilt maple wood on the body. The tone of the maple is brighter, more focused and has added projection. Other upgrades on the Dragonfly 3 are hand scalloped bracing, a double adjustable truss rod and dual graphite reinforcement rods for added neck stability and longevity. Like with all Michael Kelly basses you get improved feel with a 34" scale for the perfect string response. Of course you also get an amazing looking vine style, Dragonfly accented inlay that adorns the fingerboard. It is made from real abalone and pearl for the ultimate in instrument extravagance.

Great Bass

By Tim Taylor

from Sandy Cross, NC

Comments about Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

I agree with the other reviewer the trans black cherry burst is beautifully subtle. The dragonfly vine inlay on the neck is something you'd expect to pay $1000's for. I have a Fender Kingman but wanted to add a 5 string to my collection. The Fishman preamp is a great feature. It gives you an acoustic tone not a warmed over electric tone. My does have a built in tuner unlike the previous reviewer. My only complaint is that I'm having a hard time finding a hard shell case to fit the bass. Does anyone have any suggestions. I know Michael Kelly sells a gig bag and a hard shell but they are hard to find so far. show less

Gorgeous acoustic bass and plays like a dream

By Greg Kirkpatrick

from Wisconsin

Comments about Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5-String Acoustic-Electric Bass:

This is an absolutely phenomenal acoustic bass! The body is a lot darker than the pictures give it credit, but the trans black cherry burst is beautifully subtle. The dragonfly vine inlay on the neck is something that I have never seen before. It really makes an already beautiful instrument just pop even more. Oh and it plays fantastic! Nice smooth action, coupled with deep rich sounds make this my new favorite bass. Unplugged or plugged in, it sounds great. The ability to adjust the sound and dial in the exact tones you want to produce is a nice feature. My only complaint is that the electronics do not include a tuner. Its not a huge deal since I am always around one and if I am plugged in, then I have one racked in my amp stack. However, it would be nice to have an on-board tuner so that when I am playing unplugged that I don't need to bring one along.
