Hand-carved spruce top and maple body with Fishman System One electronics.

The Michael Kelly Legacy Dragonfly Acoustic-Electric Mandolin is a top-of-the-line Michael Kelly mandolin. The centerpiece of the Dragonfly model is the unique vine inlay design carefully inlaid into the fingerboard. The inlay made from real pearl and abalone gives this mandolin a truly custom look. The Flame is also equipped with one of their most in-demand features, a radiused fingerboard that is very comfortable to play. Many players feel that a radiused board improves their performance. The "Flame" in the Dragonfly Flame comes from its stunning solid flame maple back and sides. For improved tone, Michael Kelly has equipped this model with its propritary one-piece tailpiece that adds ring and resonance.

  • A good choice in acoustic electric mandolins!

As reviewed by JAMES on 5/27/2015

I bought this Michael Kelly acoustic-electric dragonfly as my second mandolin, to accompany my Washburn M118swk, which I love. It was on sale during Guitar Center's Memorial Day weekend sale. I wanted an electric mandolin for those times when I am playing in public and need a volume boost. This Michael Kelly mandolin has very good tone, because of the all-wood construction and thin satin finish. This allows the wood to breathe. Mandolins and guitars with a high gloss finish may be beautiful, but the wood can't vibrate enough to produce good tone. Both of my mandolins have a thin satin finish and I am very pleased with the tone on both. The Michael Kelly mandolins were made in Korea when I first discovered them years ago but now the production is in China. I am not sure this makes a difference; they seem committed to producing "custom like" instruments. I have no opinion about the tail piece or the radiused fretboard. This mandolin has good fit and finish. It has Fishman electronics for the pickup which has a treble, bass and middle tone controls, and, perhaps, best of all, an onboard tuner, which is very rare in a mandolin although common now in acoustic guitars. In fact, I can't think of another model that has an onboard tuner. Plugged in, it is very loud and can compete in volume with any guitar or banjo player in a band I might play in! The dragonfly inlay on the fingerboard is very beautiful and contributes to the custom look and cost of the instrument. It gives the mandolin a striking appearance. My only complaint was that it came with walnut flame finish rather than the antique violin satin finish. Apparently, the people in the warehouse sent what was available rather than making sure it was the version I ordered. It comes without a case.
