Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 is the world's premier guitar instruction course. The lessons are time tested and have proven success in building the technical proficiency needed to master any style of music. Written in standard notation only to improve sight-reading ability.
I give lessons to 9 students. All of which were beginners. I introduced them all to this Grade 1 book. It really makes my job easier since all I have to do is reinforce the teachings and grade them on their progress. All of my students quickly began understanding the theory and found out how easy it was to read music. I trust the Hal Leonard teaching methods. I used them too when I was a beginner......oh, over 35 years ago. Definately a great product.
It is important for beginning guitar players to learn at least a little bit about music theory and reading music. What better way than with this Mel Bay book? It's inexpensive, easy enough for anyone (including young children) to learn from, and has great little (simple) tunes in it that will stick in your head forever. I use this book with my beginning guitar students, and it has helped greatly with their progress in reading music and understanding theory.
I picked up the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method Grade 1 book along with the accompanying DVD when I first started playing about 5 years ago and highly recommend it to anyone who is new to playing guitar. This book covers all the basics and the DVD provides a great accompanying visual aid for a better understanding of the lessons. I also recommend getting the Mel Bay books that come after this one (I beleive they go up to grade 7 or 8) as I feel that they moved at a good pace and provided a good foundation for me to build on. If your a beginner guitar player, this is the series of books for you.
