As a percussionist I'm always looking for new pieces to add to my bag-of-tricks. About nine months ago I bought and subsequently returned two rather nice sets of Bongos before settling on this Meinl Bongo Cajon. The weight and portability of the Bongo Cajon make it ideal for the situation in which I use it. The tone variations are surprisingly wide. Coupled with it's simplicity, this instrument has captured the attention of a number of listeners who have approached me after a performance to inquire about the "box". Along with the assortment of Hand Drums, Shakers, Triangles and Tambourine that I use commonly, the Meinl Bongo Cajon is very much part of my "starting line-up".

I have no idea why they would call this a bongo cajon. It has no heads, so it is not a bongo, and it has no snare wires or port, so it is not a cajon. It does not sound like either of the instruments after which is is named. So, it does not get the deep tones and snare sound of a cajon, or the range of bongos, but it does get some nice tones, mostly in the higher range...

It is a fun percussion piece to have, but the description is highly misleading. That is what I get for buying it online! I expected something small and portable that would make sounds similar to a cajon and bongos. I got a nicely made, wooden box with interesting, nice tones.

Please think of a new name for this thing! It sounds closer to bongos, so maybe "Box Bongos?"

Well worth it.

By Kevin

Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

Wanted to add some sound to my trio and instead og banging on my guitar wanted something small and easy. used this past weekend for the first time. LOVED it. Big sound in a small package. Will be mounting it for use this summer. Great for a non-drummer.

Cool drums!

By Jeff Cordova

Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

This is a great product. It looks really cool and feels very solid. I like that it doesn't need to be tuned like bongos with skins.

My very first percussion item.

By sip-ws

from Lancaster, CA

Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

This bongo cajon is so great because it's not heavy what so ever, which makes it very portable and it produces a great sound. Not only that, it looks awesome too. It's perfect to jam with some acoustic guitars. I also use it to practice when everyone is asleep in my house. It's deffinitely not too quiet and it's not too loud. I love this thing.

Big Sound in a Small Package

By Kevin, Three Sheets to The Wind

from Long Branch New Jersey

Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

I play rythem for a trio and wanted to add some sound. What great addition. Mostly play ouside. Mounted it on a bongo stand and play with malletts. Great sound and easy to learn. Great addition to any trio playing Buffett, Drifters, and any summer music. Terrific buy.

    Love it!

    By JJ

    from Dallas, TX

    Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

I have been looking for something smaller than my djembe to take to drum circles, or to just have with me in case a jam breaks out somewhere. I started looking at bongos, and discovered this. This is a great little drum! I can get a wide range of sounds from it, and it's much easier to carry around than bongos would have been. I can play all of my djembe rhythms, plus a lot more. It's a little to wide to comfortably hold between my knees, but I can work around that. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for portability and great sound.

      Nice.

      By jon winslow

      Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

Bought this because I wanted something simple. I am a newbie but have a conga , tamba, cajon and a tritone so this was the missing link. Didn't really care for a snare sound so this was the choice. Well made, sounds cool and I actually have it on a table as a decoration too, it looks so nice. Its fun and simple and thats want I needed for now.

      Back porch fun

      By Dennis Dupont

      from Charleston S>C>

      Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

The bongo cajon is just right for our little back porch acoustic jam sessions. Anyone that stops by,(for the most part) enjoys having their turn at playing the cajon. This bongo cajon is built tuff, sounds great and easy to carry around. I might invest in one that has snare also. Lots of fun!!!

        Comments about Meinl Bongo Cajon:

Bought this as something my kid can beat on, and I could use for camping and bonfire type events. It has a nice sound if you hit it in the sweet spot. If you miss then it has a much duller tone. It's a little uncomfortable and hard to hold between your knees, but set it on your lap and the tone gets even better, plus you can get some more sounds out of the sides as well.

Overall I like it alot. It is an interesting hybrid between Bongos and a Cajon. My kid (2 years old)loves it and can play it all day without fear of him hurting himseld. and he can

I had an idea what this box would sound like but was really surprised by how good it responds to taps and slaps. The lightest touch yields beautiful tone. This box works out really well when recording. It compliments the tracks I;m recording with my larger Cajon Bass/Snare setup. Great value. Worth every penny.
