A wide-spectrum ride with excellent bell projection.

This Meinl Byzance dark raw bell ride cymbal is an outstanding ride cymbal with excellent sound features and an extraordinary dark look. The untreated raw bell creates a fat, projecting sound that has a wide spectrum.

Dark cymbals are not lathed and have their original appearance and sound characteristic. They are distinguished by an earthy sound with a fairly short sustain.

This Meinl Byzance ride cymbal is completely hand-hammered into shape and satisfies the highest demands of its users. Every Byzance cymbal is a piece of art and has its own unique sound characteristics which can never be duplicated.

I got this a day ago. From the looks of it, I doubt any two of these cymbals sound the same. I mean there are tons of hammer marks and they don't seem to follow in any specific pattern. The hammer marks have a black color to it and I have no idea where the black comes from. Underneath all of this black stuff, it looks like the cymbal is lathed, expect for the bell. In a couple of places it looks like the cymbal smith got carried away with spots getting hit more than once, and in other places the hammer marks are deaper than the rest of the cymbal. I was expecting it do have a dark ping sound. It does but it also has a medium sustain to it. The cymbal isn't loud but it isn't weak either. I kind of like it so far, but it is more of a novely item than a full time ride cymbal. The bell of the cymbal is the best part of the cymbal. The name "raw" really fits the sound of the bell. BTW this cymbal is made in Turkey not Germany so I am not sure why it is so expensive.

This cymbal is amazing. Although the definition lacks with smaller sized tips, I can see this only being used for Jazz and softer styles. I only say this because there isn't really a noticeable progression to how it sounds if you bang the heck out of it. Regardless, if you do play softer styles, then this one's for you
