Overview

Martin guitars from the X series feature patented high pressure laminate (HPL) back and sides with a solid Sitka spruce top, patented mortise and tenon neck construction, and professionally installed Fishman electronics. The result: great-sounding, great-playing guitars, that are environmentally friendly, and priced to fly out the door. This is one of Martin's best values ever. The X Series affirms Martin's commitment to providing an affordable and competitive option to players dedicated to live performance.

The 6-string Martin DX1AE acoustic-electric guitar features a D-14 platform, a dreadnought body design producing big, round sound. Pairing the Sitka spruce top with the mahogany-pattern HPL back and sides, the Martin DX1AE belts out rich clarity and plenty of projection. The mortise and tennon neck joint ensures solid construction of the instrument, with optimal resonant tone, while eliminating drop-off in the finer dynamics.

The Martin guitar's stratabond neck is a multilayered wood creation, bonding layers of wood under extremely high pressure. The material is then carved and finished in a conventional manner. The end result is a very strong neck that provides definition and articulate sustain from note to note.

The modified low oval neck shape, 25.4" scale, 1-11/16" nut width, and 16" radius provide comfort and dexterity when performing intricate movements and progressions along the black Richlite fretboard.

The Martin DX1AE guitar features proven Sonicore pick-up technology with the Fishman Sonitone system featuring "easy access" volume and tone controls conveniently and strategically located just inside the sound hole.

Dressed in a satin finish and featuring chrome tuners, chrome hardware, this acoustic electric guitar has the look and sound of a highly collectible Martin, but goes for a price that anyone can afford. Embrace the dream of owning your very own Martin guitar, at a price that is too good to pass up.

All Martin guitars from the X Series arrive stage ready—just plug them in and play. All X Series guitars also include a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Martin has always made prudent use of natural resources, especially rare or endangered tonewoods in making their guitars. At the same time, it's committed to building guitars of superior tone and playability that are affordable to every guitarist. The Martin DX1AE guitar from the X Series more than meets both of these criteria.

I was looking for a guitar that sounded great and on my way to guitar center I was thinking.... I wonder how much this is going to set me back. I promised myself to only go by 2 things and 2 things alone great sound and easy playabillity. I tried alot of different guitars from cheap to ouch my wife is going to flip. When I picked up this Martin DX1AE I gave it to my wife and said hold on to this dont put it down!. Then I tried to see if anything else came close to it. I tried alot and I mean alot of great guitars but this guitar is the one I kept coming back to. I kept thinking is this the right price tag on this thing?. My hat is off to Martin for making such a great sounding well built guitar that was easy on my wallet and I will always keep them in mind before buying any other brand. Dont believe me try it yourself.

I bought the Martin DX1AE after playing it at my local Guitar Center. It had that "Martin" sound. After three months the laminate is peeling off the back of the guitar. I broke a string so I put new Martin Phosphor Bronze Lights on it and over time the neck seemed to be pulling forward, action getting too high to bar a chord. Despite a truss rod hole, to my surprise there is no rod to adjust the neck. I'm sorry to say I'm disappointed in Martin for the quality of this guitar. Waiting to hear about Warranty repair since that is all I expect to receive.

Finally...a great guitar at a decent price

By David Gorny

from Guntersville, AL

I recently went to my local GC and I came across the Martin X Series. I know some traditionalist might complain about the laminate siding and black richlite fingerboard but I didn't care. The sound was absolutely awesome. I've owned a number of guitars over the years and this is by far the best sounding and easiest playing one I have ever bought. My only complaint, and a minor one at that, is the location of the batteries for the Fishman electronics. In order to access the batteries you have to remove the strings first. Not too big of a deal!

Great guitar for the price

By Roy C.

from Pittsburgh, Pa.

I didn't buy this guitar because it sounds as good as a much higher priced Martin. I didn't buy this guitar because it is the same build quality as a higher priced Martin. And I sure didn't buy this guitar because it's smells good...as some other reviewer mentioned. I bought this guitar because it played and sounded better than any other guitar in it's price range. Sure, it has laminated back and sides and a stratabone neck which are not "real" wood but it has a Sitka spruce top and Fishman electronics that work well. It has a nice sound and is very easy to play. Mine was set up great right out of the box and I am extremely happy that I bought it. Also, I like the fact that the volume and tone controls are "hidden" in the sound hole. It keeps the overall appearance clean. Check one out at the nearest store and be prepared to carry it home.

2nd guitar needs work

By ANDREW MOXOM

from Woodbury Minnesota

So this is my 2nd DX1AE since November last year. The first one sounded great and played well, but when using a capo. It buzzed on quite a few frets. On closer inspection, it had a significant hump on the 12th and 14 fret as the richlite finger board contorted to the shape of the top. I returned it under the 30 day return policy and swapped it for a new one. This time, I tried a capo on it. It did not buzz, and the neck looked good and when I got the new one home, it played like a dream. The sound is superb, and the playability was also very good. The guitar continues to sound great, but last week, i heard my first buzz with a capo on 2nd fret. This time I am outside of the 30 day return policy. Now i will have to deal directly with an authorized dealer. It has not needed a set up, but i can see a noticeable hump much like the first one I had as the finger board follows the contour of the spruce top by the neck to body join... So i will take it to an authorized Martin dealer this time to have them see if its fixable under the warranty. I've been diligent with humidification as its dry here in the cold Minnesota winters. My house has a centralized humidity system and it averages 40 to 46% daily. So i am confident its been cared for correctly. I know its a lower end Martin with a sound way out of its price range, but i did expect more from Martin. The price is cheap for a Martin but is high end, and middle price for some guitar manufacturers.. So for the dough, the DX1AE is a great sound, and playable instrument. How well they hold up over the long term remains to be seen.... I hope that Martin will be good on their warranty, even for a low spec guitar. It has so much potential to be a superb guitar, its a shame about the quality control on the neck to body joins.

Best in class.

By Austin Ocheltree

from NC

Despite what some enthusiastic new owners may say, this does not sound as good as Martin's classic series dreads and up (D-18,28,etc.), but that's not its purpose. What it is, however, is the best dreadnought in its price range. I've owned it for about 2 years now, and still enjoy playing it. By far the best tone you're going to get for this kind of money. If you're in the market for a great guitar on a budget, buy this!

Great guitar for an intermediate player

By Andy Wilson

from Jackson, TN

I bought this guitar from Guitar Center in Nashville, TN a few months ago. I've been playing for about 7 years or so, and have always been a Fender guy in both electrics and acoustics. I'll say first that this guitar blows away ANY Fender acoustic I've ever played, even their higher-end ones. If you're like me, and used to playing cheaper guitars (around the 200-300 range) this will be a HUGE upgrade. It plays like a dream, and sounds amazing. I honestly feel like it's made me a better player than I was before, just because its so easy to hit chords and everything sounds so good, it makes you want to keep playing and learning new stuff. I recommend getting a hard case and a humidifier with it to keep it in top condition. I've had 3 different sets of strings on it since I got it: D'Addario Light PB's, Medium PB's, and Custom Light 80/20's. So far I like the 80/20's the best. The brilliance and projection of the 80/20 string really complements the warm, mellow tones that Martins are known for. That's just a personal preference though, it sounds great with any strings you put on it... Hope this helps!

Excellent - Best Acoustic I have owned in 25 years.

By David Fordyce

from Franklin Ohio

Really easy to play with great sound. However, When buying yours be sure to check it out as with any other guitar. I found 1 with a defective neck and 1 with defective pickups out of six of these guitars that I looked at. The one I took home was unbeatable but two of them would have been problematic.

Very nice!

By Roy C.

from Pittsburgh, Pa.

I was in the acoustic room playing some highend guitars and checking out some acoustic amps. Not being able to afford the beautiful guitars I was playing I was not actually looking to buy. Martins, Taylors, Gibsons....all right there for the taking but alas no money in my pocket. After 45 minutes or so I was about done when I noticed this Martin in the corner on the bottom row of hanging guitars. It looked kinda plain but I decided to give it a try. OMG! This thing plays great and sounds wonderful. WHAT? $499? Is it broken or something? The sales guy explained the makings of it to me as I continued to play it. I couldn't believe the quality and the price. He left me alone for awhile and I played on. Needless to say I came home with a new guitar that day. I hadn't even planned on getting an acoustic but after playing this one......I was sold. I think you will be too. This would be the perfect beginner guitar beacause it plays so easily and is under $500. Despite the price it is Martin quality through and through. Check one out...you'll be glad you did. I am!

WOW

By craig atwell

from Rowlett, Tx

I never thought I would own a Martin. Had Ovations for 20 years and went to GC to swap for a full body sound. I had my eye on Epiphone or Ibanez due to the look but the salesman there lead me to this one. He told me own 2 Martins including this one. He said he loved the sound. After I sat and played it I want thank him for telling me about this awesome guitar. I have played for 40 years and this is the best acoustic I have ever owned. Thanks to Martin for producing a $500 dollar version that guys like me can experience the greatness that is Martin.
