In my opinion, these guitars have been so poorly marketed. The only marketing seems to be Martin admitting that there are no frills and almost apologizing for using laminate back and sides by saying that "at least it is environmentally friendly."

I thought that these guitars were some kind of manufactured blasphemy before I even held one. In fact, I didn't really want to try one. The only gave one a chance because it was the only 000 sized Martin in the store. I was immediately surprised by the quality feel of the neck and the astounding tone coming out of it.

The tone is phenomenal, in fact, it is the most balanced tone I have ever heard from a guitar. The bass sounds great and the highs do not sound cheap or harsh. (Most of the far eastern imports from major manufacturers have way more features but poor feel and harsh tones.)

After trying a few, I picked up the Dreadnaught sized one (the Dx1ae), and now I have also purchased the OOO sized model.

The craftsmanship and comfort of both of them are top notch. It really is the easiest playing neck on an acoustic that I have ever owned. And both guitars stay in tune very well.

The only negative comments that I have on these guitars are:
The neck is heavy. This does kind of throw off the balance of the guitar. It does not matter to me, but there are some that might find this off-putting.
And
The strings that come on it which I believe are the Lifespan strings, don't seem to be the best match for the guitar. I tried a few different sets and ended up with the D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Light Strings. These really enhanced the tone with a warm sustain.

Went looking for an inexpensive 000 and thought I'd give Martin's X-Series a try having been fairly pleased with my X-Series Dread. Unfortunately, things seem to be going downhill in Martin's Mexico operation. I sampled several of these in two different Guitar Center locations and all had some glaring flaw. I attributed that to rough handling in store and ordered one. Unfortunately, the cabling of the guitar I received was flopping around loose inside and there was a strange greenish tint to the spruce top where it met the neck. I'm not saying every made in Mexico Martin is a lemon but I sure wouldn't buy one I hadn't laid hands on.

Comments about Martin X Series Custom X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Had my eye on another guitar but, on a whim, i plugged the Martin up. It was wow from the beginning. Has a really cool sound to it. Unlike any of the others i played in this price range. Great feel and playability. I also played the same style in a Taylor and it blew it out of the water. The fit and finish was nice. Action wasn't too high or too low. Had GC set it up for me. Everything was in order. i have a lot of friends that are salesman at various large music stores and they all have had nothing but good things to say about the X series Martins and that says a lot. i like the matte finish. Won't show off those scratches and bumps as easy. If you are a wood-snob then this might not be for you, but for a player.....you can't go wrong. It really has soul. Tons of life!! Just and all around cool guitar.

Comments about Martin X Series Custom X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I saw this guitar at GC and just couldn't believe the sound. I didn't want the demo so they ordered me one. When it came out of the box the smell of the fresh wood was amazing. I took it to get a set up and with new strings it sounded better than in the store. It should come with instructions on how to shut down the battery as mine has since died. I took off a star because the HPL is flimsy, my wife hit the guitar in the bag and broke a hole in it. I taped it and it still sounds good though. All in all its a nice gigging guitar.

Comments about Martin X Series Custom X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The only piece of wood on this whole instrument is the spruce top, but it's a beautiful one. Neck and body are laminate/synthetics, including fingerboard and bridge. Sort of reminds me of an Ovation-ized Martin. Obviously the price reflects that. I find that it performs extremely well in the sub-$600 price range. You still get that big, strong Martin sound, just with less elegant trimmings. For my own purposes, I prefer the all-wood Taylor 100 series in this same price range. But I can see how someone dead set on a Martin would be all over this X series. Both are built in Mexico, by the way, and very well I might add.

I always wanted a Martin, but the cost of adding one to my collection was always too high. I found this one on sale at GC, and couldn't resist. I couldn't be happier with the guitar I took home. The fit, finish, and feel of the guitar are amazing, especially considering the price. The neck especially feels great, and shows the quality of the build. You really can't go wrong with any of these entry level Martins.

Comments about Martin X Series Custom X1-000E Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Purchased on sale, curious about a Martin made from nontraditional materials. The guitar has exceeded my expectations, and sounds much better than the comparable Taylor model. Action is solid, tuning stable, and the neck consistent across. Onboard pickup sounds alright on its own, but will sound much better with an bit of pedal action and EQing instead of straight into a P.A. Side jack is unobtrusive. The guitar itself is quite solid and near impervious to humidity from what "they" say. Looking forward to getting a lot of use out of it. Better than that Little Martin Sheeran uses anyhow...

I played the demo at GC and loved it. But I wanted a new one so they ordered me one. It came to the house and the smell of the wood was wonderful. The guitar plays fine and the sound is like an expensive model's. It is made in Mexico but they have been making guitars there for hundreds of years. The negative is that the back and sides are a laminate, but it still sounds great. A very good deal for the money.

Wonderful sound from a guitar that I can't seem to ever put down. Neck is smooth and notes are clear. Smaller size is good for a bad shoulder. It's just about as environmentally friendly you can get for a wooden instrument without sacrificing quality or sound.
