Great sound from a Little Martin!

By folkiekes

from Columbus, Ohio

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

I am quite thrilled with my Little Martin Guitar LX1E. The sound is rich and bold, as I have come to expect from Martin. It is a great guitar to have out and not take up a bunch of space. I plan to use it as a back-up guitar when playing live. In fact, it sounds so good, that I recorded it the other night with great results. A couple features that rock: 1)It has a control panel with volume and tone. 2)The battery can be changed from the outside panel. 3)The gig bag is very nice. 4)It feels great to play...smooth and easy. 5)The action is impressive. 6)It is so darn CUTE!! I also recommend it to those who enjoy small bodied guitars...I've never played a guitar soooo comfortable. I have a very nice, much more expensive Martin that is in its case now because I dig this Little Martin so much.

i love this little martin!

By brad powers

from Indianapolis, Indiana

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

just got my Martin LX1E a couple weeks ago...and i couldn't be happier. it has a huge sound for a little guitar. don't expect it to sound like D18, or a big ol D28...but it sounds like a martin! it has a richer, woodier, deeper tone than all the other little guitars i personally played. i tried the baby taylor, a little alvarez, etc., etc...i just liked the sound of the martin better. it plays really smooth. i got it primarily to travel with for times when i don't need to bring my regular Martin D18-V (although i find myself playing the little martin all the time). anyway, i just got back from my first trip with it. stows easily on airplanes. it's very light and easy to carry thanks to the back-pack style gig bag that it comes with. speaking of which, the gig bag it comes with is very nice. it's very sturdy and extra padded! when i was out of town i was asked to play a song unexpectedly at a wedding. they had no sort of PA or amplifier and i was a little worried that it wouldn't fill the room, but i shouldn't have been! this thing is a little cannon! it does have a place for you to plug in and while i personally don't like to plug in acoustic guitars (i'd rather mic them), i did plug this one in to try it out...and it sounds great! it sounds like a much bigger guitar anyway you play it. i also wanted to add that at the time of my purchase, the LX1E was the only little martin that came with a solid sitka spruce top and that is why i chose it over other little martins. it does have HPL back and sides, but you can't tell by the sound of the guitar and i'm learning to appreciate that acpect as well. for example, i'm not only a working musician, but i am also a teacher...and using the LX1E for lessons has been great. it's easier to carry, you don't have to worry about dinging your bigger guitars...and the HPL back provides a quick and easy writing surface when you need one! i hope this review has been helpful. i don't normally review anything online like this...but i love this guitar so much that i wanted you all to know about it! :)

More details of included

By Stephen Fay

from Long Beach, CA

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

Some info on the LX1E that may not be available within these reviews or anywhere else. The LX1 and LX1E have the solid top and the LXM & LXME have the High Pressure Laminate (HPL) top. For a few more dollars I got the solid wood top with the reportedly better sound that I now need to protect a little better than the HPL. Sides and back are laminates also. The included gig bag is made by TKL and equivalent to their model 4575 Black Belt Original 3/4 Size Guitar Bag. This is the one with the metal backpack strap style adjusters. It is well padded but cannot protect as well as a hardcase. GuitarCenter.com offers the Gator GWE-Acou-3/4 Hardshell 3/4-Size Acoustic Guitar Case at the time I wrote this. The guitar comes pre-strung and includes a 9 volt battery. There is no pick so beg some off the saleperson when you purchase the guitar. Monitoring via the amp jack with headphones will not work without a headphone amp or guitar amp with headphone jack. I'm gonna try my stereo to see if that works also. There is no/off switch for the electronics. There are volume and tone adjusters. I recommmend removing the battery unless you plan to use while connected to an amp and remove it again immediately after use. Batteries have a way of corroding only when you don't expect them to. A guitar strap is not included and neither is a user manual. I hope this helps.

Nice Compromise Between Travel and Tone

By Baxter

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

I own a Backpacker with pickup and have tried several travel guitars over the years. I don't buy acoustic guitars without electronics anymore just because of the versatility that electronics can provide, even if it is just for tuning. Acoustically the LX1E guitar is pretty good. The medium gauge strings and shortened scale are only objectionable if you play a full size light strung acoustic prior to picking this guitar up. Otherwise the tone is pure though somewhat sterile. I think the solid top helps this guitar quite a bit, so consider upgrading if you can afford it. The electronics panel is near the end pin which is fine but the volume and tone controls are not intuitively placed and I think the direction of increase should be reversed. It's good enough that I'm considering selling the Backpacker and my beater acoustic guitar for campfire and fun.

What a surprize!

By Barry Buck

from Folsom CA.

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

This Little Martin is great. I have a 1972 D-28 I got new. This martin, if played with the finesse neccassary to play a smaller guitar, sounds wonderful. Very Melodic and crisp, clean and full sounding, all in one. I know the price is extremely low for this guitar. I bought the Model with the built in microphone and it sounds great! Remember, a smaller guitar needs to be played softer, not hammered on for the true beauty of its sound to shine. WELL WORTH THE MONEY AND MORE.

my favorite guitar

By Geoff black

from collegeville PA

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

I had a Martin Backpacker for many years and a few very cheap full size guitars. I always liked the backpacker for its portability but the mini Martin blows it away in sound. I am now fortunate enough to own a couple nice full size guitars which I play most of the time but the guitar that I'd keep over all of them is the mini. The portability matched with the adequate sound makes this the mini mighty workhorse. I mail ordered mine and my only complaints were some rough areas on the cross-beacing and of course a few bucks knocked off the price would be nice.

Phenomenal!

By Jaimey

from Austin, Texas

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

I love this guitar! Don't let its size fool you! It packs a punch when you plug it into a system and when you're just playing acoustically! Compared with my Baby Taylor, it definitely has a more balanced and more wholesome tone as with the Taylor's darker sound. I love both guitars, so it's hard to choose which is better. But I digress! This guitar is phenomenal! I'm an intermediate-advanced guitar player and I love this guitar compared to my others. Definitely worth the money, especially with the Fishman pick-up!

Best sound for price range

By Jack Whyte

from New York, NY

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

For the amount of money that you pay for this axe, you can't ask for anything more. Martin has delivered a powerhouse of an instrument in their Little Martin model. They've crammed the mighty roar of a D-28 into a small body without sacrificing tone or quality or anything. DO NOT mistake this for merely an entry-level guitar. If you are on the market for an instrument with practicality but you do not wish to sacrifice quality, please do yourself a favor and buy this guitar. You will not regret it.

Every Serious Player Should Own One

By Robert Kneisler

from Seattle, Washington

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

Mine is still being shipped at the time of writing, but I'm buying this Martin LX-1E to replace the Martin LX-1 I bought eight years ago. I have several very nice full-sized guitars including a couple of Martins. As my instruments got better and better over the years, I started to realize that just throwing one in the car and going out for the day was increasingly becoming at least potentially a rather expensive proposition. I mean there's theft, accidents, acts of nature... And I'm sure as heck not going to take a Martin 000-28EC camping with me. And dragging a full-sized guitar in a hard-shell case with me all day at a music festival is tiring. So early on, I bought a Martin Backpacker. Hated it. Sure, it was cheap and was easy to pack and carry, but it didn't play well at all and was extremely uncomfortable to hold. The thing was neck-heavy (of course) and seemed to want to twist downward while playing it. When these baby guitars started coming out, the LX-1 was head and shoulders above the rest, at least to my taste. Probably because it has that Martin neck and that solid spruce top. I think it beats the snot out of the baby Taylor. The HPL back and sides seem to do a good job also - I don't actually know what is responsible, but the guitar projects very well. You can hear it just fine when playing in a group of guitar pickers. And that neck is pretty wild - its made out of a whole bunch of layers of laminate and could be the strongest neck made, although it adjusts like any other neck - nice trick, that. But after bringing it home, something surprising happened: I found myself playing it more than any of my other guitars. It was easy to just leave it on the stand and not have to put it away every time I use it. And if I had an idea I wanted to work on, there it was. And when I'm working in new material, I don't need the best neck or the best sounding guitar - I just need a guitar that's handy, and I'll drag out one of the better instruments when its time to put the finishing touches on. I didn't understand what a fantastic way of working this was until I recently discovered that I had mostly worn the frets out in only eight years! (And no, the frets on this guitar are made out of the same material as all the other guitars - I just played the hell out of this thing.) So what I had been doing all these years is saving the wear-and-tear on my other, more expensive instruments while working out the knucklehead stuff. Fantastic. Re-fretting the thing would be around $300, so all really need to do is sell the one I have for around $70 (disclosing the wear) to a relative beginner who won't care about fret-wear so much, that person will end up with an amazingly cheap and good-sounding guitar, and I'll start over again with the next one. My god: Martin has invented the disposable guitar! This time around, I'm getting the LX-1E with the electronics. The electronics are made by Fishman, so I don't need to worry about the quality: I've been using various Fishman products for years and have never been disappointed. Also, the one thing I didn't like about my old LX-1 was that I couldn't use it for testing various effects setups, and having the LX-1E will correct that. So for the price, there is virtually no downside to these guitars in terms of tone, volume and playability. They would do well as the main guitar for a beginner or intermediate player, and take some of the wear off of better guitars for the advanced player. Just a great all-around kick-around instrument. Only downside I can think of is the lack of a pick guard. I almost never use a pick, but the one time I sat down and learned a Michael Hedges song that required one, I wore into the top just below the sound hole. When I get the LX-1E, I'm going to see about having my luthier fit it with some sort of light, clear plastic guard.

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

I use the product for playing songs like Ed Sheeran,Acoustic soul songs like All of me by John Legend and things like that but it works great for everything. It could have a great country tone as well. Overall its an amazing acoustic feels durable and sounds great. It isn't that much of a difference in tone when it comes to normal Martin guitars but it sounds a little bit smaller. A little more bottom end taken out but not a lot. The guitar is perfect for me and as long as you can deal with the size its a great choice. Many people label it as a travel guitar but Ed Sheeran is an example that it isn't much different. It works for everything and gets as loud as you need it too. It includes a tuner a button that says phase that adds more shimmering highs and a contour button that adds more bottom end. It also includes a volume knob all packed into the Fish man electronics. The battery pack is in the bottom of the guitar right next to the strap knob and the center of the strap nob is where a cable would go. The guitar is very light and the finish on it isn't normal lacquered finish. Its very thin but its a tougher less shiny coat. Its just as durable if not more durable but its thinner and not as smooth. I don't know what else to say besides the fact that its amazing.

He is a Beastly Little Man

By PHIL CLEMENT

from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

Bought this guitar because I like the sound Ed Sheeran gets out of his (although I think his is modified somewhat). In any event, I must applaud the services of Nick at the Guitar Center in Saginaw Michigan for his help in acquiring this little gem. Could not find one in Canada and was on holidays in his area - thanx Nick. This guitar is in high demand right now (probably because of artists like Ed Sheeran) so if you'e thinking about getting one, do so before the prices go up (you know that supply and demand thingy economists talk about??). I have other very high quality acoustics (Breedlove and Babicz) so I didn't have many expectations from an instrument in this price range. However this Little Martin is a thing of beauty. I don't care what the heck it's made out of cause it plays beautifully. Admittedly the sound is a little thin, but the body is small and I didn't expect it to project sound like my dreadnaught and jumbo acoustics. I think it sounds just fine acoustically. When you plug this little guy into an amplifier it's a whole new ball game. The sound created by the Fishman system is comparable to anything I own right now (and I have some very expensive LR Baggs systems). This thing is a "beast" and I get a kick out of playing it at my gigs. People snicker at the little guitar until I plug it in and blow them away!! Gig bag is first rate, with lovely stitching for the Martin logo on the front. I highly recommend this guitar - get one now before they're all gone (or too expensive to think about).

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

I've owned this guitar for a few months and I have to say I love it. The sound quality is amazing! Even when plugged in it sound great, the pick ups are very simple to use, plus it has a built in tuner??. It's also great for travel! It comes with a VERY well made and thickly padded gig bag and its easy to carry thought the airport. Also it's small it enough to take as a carryon! One con, if you think it is, is the fact that the solid spruce top is not coated with anything so it will get dirty and scratched up.

my daughter just received a new little martin on 03-28-2013 for her birthday and i could not believe how good of a guitar it is! i have many guitars including a Martin D-28 and i was skeptical about getting a little martin for my daughter even though Ed Sheeran plays one and plays it very hard! All i have to say is wow what a well crafted guitar and a wonderful neck!! If you need more proof just go to youtube and watch Ed Sheeran play these Little Martin Guitars!! Ed is rough on them!! good luck

Great guitar for beginners!

By A E Waller

from Amsterdam

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

I was going to the US on holiday, and thought it would be a great opportunity to buy myself a good guitar. Saw Ed Sheeran playing with this guitar and just loved it, and fortunately for me, it's not expensive at all. Along with the presidents day sale I was able to order the guitar and have it shipped to the store so I could pick it right up when passing by. The guitar itself has a beautiful, warm sound, with much volume. Very powerful guitar for such a small one. The size is just perfect for traveling and doing small gigs along the way. It's just the ideal guitar for those laid back travelers. The fact that it's acoustic-electric makes it even better. Built in tuner and pickup from fishman are of amazing quality. The gigbag that comes along with the guitar is really nice. Use it all the time. I couldn't say anything negative about this guitar. It looks awesome, sounds awesome, and is so fun to play with. I have been playing for a little over a week now, and I am so hooked on this instrument!

Awesome little guitar

By Harold Ellis

from Boulder, CO

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

I was looking for a small guitar for my daughter but knew there was a very good chance that her interest in playing could be short lived so I may as well get something that I liked too. This guitar has an impressive full sound for such a small body and it is a blast to play. I liked it's sound much more than the Baby Taylor which sounded comparatively dull to my ears. Sounds great fingerpicked or lightly strummed. The notes ring nicely. The neck is very solid and it stays in tune very well. I've only amplified it a few times but the electronics sound great. It is almost worth having the electronics just to have the on board tuner available which works well. My only complaints are that I wish it came with a pick guard and had more durable finish on the top.

In love with this guitar!

By Tammy Farrell

from Greenville SX

Comments about X Series 2015 LX1E Little Martin Acoustic-Electric:

As a female guitar player, I've found using standard size guitars a challenge. I've been using an Ovation, which is an amazing guitar, but I find it difficult to hit the barre chords. This Little Martin changed everything!!! First of all, it sounds amazing. It carries the same sound as a standard size guitar. Second, it's small enough to make the more difficult chords easier to reach. Third, it's just too cute. I LOVE THIS GUITAR!
