Overview

Martin guitars from the X series feature patented high pressure laminate (HPL) back and sides with a solid Sitka spruce top, patented mortise and tenon neck construction, and professionally installed Fishman electronics. The result: great-sounding, great-playing guitars, that are environmentally friendly, and priced to fly out the door. This is one of Martin's best values ever. The X Series affirms Martin's commitment to providing an affordable and competitive option to players dedicated to live performance.

The 6-string Martin DX1AE acoustic-electric guitar features a D-14 platform, a dreadnought body design producing big, round sound. Pairing the Sitka spruce top with the mahogany-pattern HPL back and sides, the Martin DX1AE belts out rich clarity and plenty of projection. The mortise and tennon neck joint ensures solid construction of the instrument, with optimal resonant tone, while eliminating drop-off in the finer dynamics.

The Martin guitar's stratabond neck is a multilayered wood creation, bonding layers of wood under extremely high pressure. The material is then carved and finished in a conventional manner. The end result is a very strong neck that provides definition and articulate sustain from note to note.

The modified low oval neck shape, 25.4" scale, 1-11/16" nut width, and 16" radius provide comfort and dexterity when performing intricate movements and progressions along the black Richlite fretboard.

The Martin DX1AE guitar features proven Sonicore pick-up technology with the Fishman Sonitone system featuring "easy access" volume and tone controls conveniently and strategically located just inside the sound hole.

Dressed in a satin finish and featuring chrome tuners, chrome hardware, this acoustic electric guitar has the look and sound of a highly collectible Martin, but goes for a price that anyone can afford. Embrace the dream of owning your very own Martin guitar, at a price that is too good to pass up.

All Martin guitars from the X Series arrive stage ready‚ÄĚjust plug them in and play. All X Series guitars also include a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Martin has always made prudent use of natural resources, especially rare or endangered tonewoods in making their guitars. At the same time, it's committed to building guitars of superior tone and playability that are affordable to every guitarist. The Martin DX1AE guitar from the X Series more than meets both of these criteria.

I bought the Martin DX1AE after playing it at my local Guitar Center. It had that "Martin" sound. After three months the laminate is peeling off the back of the guitar. I broke a string so I put new Martin Phosphor Bronze Lights on it and over time the neck seemed to be pulling forward, action getting too high to bar a chord. Despite a truss rod hole, to my surprise there is no rod to adjust the neck. I'm sorry to say I'm disappointed in Martin for the quality of this guitar. Waiting to hear about Warranty repair since that is all I expect to receive.

Just Amazing, Superior Guitar, Affordable Price

By Branden

from Seekonk, MA

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

For a while I had been playing on a really cheap "trainer" guitar as me and my dad would call it, one whose sound was not great and was very hard to play. So I decided I would head over to guitarcenter and look for a new acoustic. I wanted something that sounded good, but was also right around my price range of 500 or less. With this Martin DX1AE I was completely blown away in both areas. I found it sitting all by itself in the "expensive" acoustic section of the room and I just picked it up and began playing; It was unbelievable. Most of all I couldnt believe the price it sounded better than some of the more expensive guitars in there and at a price tag of 489 it was only a fraction of the cost. If you are thinking about buying this guitar and have about the same price range of 500 you CANNOT go wrong. It has an amazing bold and rich sound to it, the fretboard is amazingly smooth and the strings are very easy to play. Fretting chords and playing riffs is so smooth and it is a real treat to play. As well it gives you great versatility; it has a true and deep acoustic sound to it with the ease of plug in and play electronics for any small gig you might want to play. I am no professional musician by any means but this guitar is perfect for anyone who has a few years experience and just loves to play for fun with friends or even for your friends. Two thumbs way up! Great Brand, Great Guitar, Great Price. Period. If you want a good guitar Martin is your brand.

5 Stars and Then Some!!

By Hops

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been playing for about 2 years on a "starter" guitar and just upgraded to the Martin DX1AE. It looks, sounds, feels and even smells amazing!! I went from playing 30 -45 minutes a day to about an hour and a half now(at least). This guitar will make you want to get better and it will motivate you to play more. Sounds great plugged in, even on a small, cheap amp. If you are looking in the $300 - $500 range, look no further. You will love it!!

I like it

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Stays in tune well, very minor tuning, if any, from session to session. Sounds very good for Martins "low end" guitar. Sure, a little more $ but well worth the investment. Ask for a discount and they will do it, got mine for fourtwentythree. Humidify and it will play look and even smell great!

Best in its class

By Allan Cruz

from Dallas, Texas

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Nothing fancy about this guitar but no big deal for me as I am more interested on the sound quality. Best sound quality in its class, very well made and very easy to play. Go test this guitar yourself.... It's made in Mexico and the back, sides and neck are manufactured wood but this doesn't affect the sound quality in my opinion and what the heck, it only cost me $399 (I have a $100 coupon discount). It has a solid spruce top though and this is what got me to choose this guitar. If you are in the market for a guitar in the $500 range, you won't go wrong with this one (plus it's a Martin).

best I tried in the price range....a can't miss choice!

By Chris

from The Colony, TX

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I needed a steel string acoustic that could plug into an amp if need be that was in my price range. My main criteria outside of that was sound and playability. In regards to sound, my main preference was sound as played acoustically. I mention that because I used to have an Ovation that sounded great through an amp, but really lacked a great sound when un-plugged. I had viewed some brands/models on the web before heading into the store. Based on that, I was leaning toward a flashy Takamine. When I got to the store, I tried the ones I had seen on the web, but something was lacking in sound mostly and some in feel. I tried about 7 different acoustics, and was about to settle for a Fender when I saw this Martin on the wall. Having had a friend with a Martin, I knew they were good, but didn't think they had anything less than $1K. I pulled it down and immediately noticed it was lighter, easier to hold, had better wood on the top, and had easy to play action. Those things alone could have swayed me, but I had to strum to check the sound. Once I did, I knew immediately that it was the right one. The tone is very warm, resonant, and projected well from a volume perspective. It had enough low end to counter-balance the warmth at the top of the tone spectrum. To put it in simple terms, it just sounded to me how an acoustic 6-string should sound. If there is anything missing, the convenience of a built in tuner and multi-level EQ could be mentioned, but the tone is good enough that I'm not sure how much better an EQ would make it (besides, I can do that within my DAW software after the fact and there is a tone control knob that does some of that) and I don't know how good the built-in tuners work anyways. Again, those are small things someone other than me might complain about, but if your decision hinges more on those things than on the sound, then the music coming out of your guitar can't be that great anyways. In conclusion, I can't recommend this enough to either a long time player who wants a great sounding mid-lower priced guitar or even for a new player starting out. I can't compare it to a $3,000 guitar, as I've not yet been able to afford one, but just try this one and you'll likely agree.

wow.

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

i have had this guitar for about a year, and it is amazing. you would think that it wouldn't be as nice as say, a d-28, a d-18, or any of those other expensive martins, but this sounds just as good! also, the laminate back and sides, are GREAT. i was a bit skeptical at first, but it turned out very nice. it projects the sound very well, and doesn't scratch as easy as a fully wood guitar. i recommend this guitar to anyone who wants a nice martin at a nice price, and anyone who is a beginner, intermediate or expert player. :)

Amazing tone

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is great. Amazing tone. Amazing look. Stays in tune. The only problem I had with this guitar was the strings that came with it weren't so great. I would recommend the elixir polyweb strings to really bring out that warm Martin tone. This guitar sounds great plugged in too.

So rich

By Mario Pena

from Rancho Cucamonga CA

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I cant get over how rich and balanced this guitar sounds and it smells great too. Its true inspiration to play everyday :) <<Yep thats me everyday! For about 2 months I knew I wanted to upgrade my guitar from my beginner guitar and while I thought I had my mind made up with Taylor (well I least I thought I did) their dreadnaught body never felt natural to my playing style. Martin really did feel natural with my playing style. I was willing to pay up too 700 dollars on my new guitar but when making comparisons I dont feel in anyway cheated for going for the less expensive of my choices. If your criteria is a great jamming guitar without a lot of flair and on a budget- Do Yourself A Favor and play this! Before you invest a few hundred bucks on a guitar.

Amazing Guitar

By John Choi

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

When i first heard about this guitar i thought it sounded pretty cool, because of the name Dx1. But not only that but this guitar is amazing i gotta say, it looks very sexy, with the hidden electronic features, which makes it clean looking. the sound is very tone, and crisp, and perfect for me. This guitar i think is VERY cheap for the qualitites, so if you get a chance to see one and play it you will know what i mean. It blew me away, and hope this helps.

Very nice!

By Roy C.

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was in the acoustic room playing some highend guitars and checking out some acoustic amps. Not being able to afford the beautiful guitars I was playing I was not actually looking to buy. Martins, Taylors, Gibsons....all right there for the taking but alas no money in my pocket. After 45 minutes or so I was about done when I noticed this Martin in the corner on the bottom row of hanging guitars. It looked kinda plain but I decided to give it a try. OMG! This thing plays great and sounds wonderful. WHAT? $499? Is it broken or something? The sales guy explained the makings of it to me as I continued to play it. I couldn't believe the quality and the price. He left me alone for awhile and I played on. Needless to say I came home with a new guitar that day. I hadn't even planned on getting an acoustic but after playing this one......I was sold. I think you will be too. This would be the perfect beginner guitar beacause it plays so easily and is under $500. Despite the price it is Martin quality through and through. Check one out...you'll be glad you did. I am!

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I never thought I would own a Martin. Had Ovations for 20 years and went to GC to swap for a full body sound. I had my eye on Epiphone or Ibanez due to the look but the salesman there lead me to this one. He told me own 2 Martins including this one. He said he loved the sound. After I sat and played it I want thank him for telling me about this awesome guitar. I have played for 40 years and this is the best acoustic I have ever owned. Thanks to Martin for producing a $500 dollar version that guys like me can experience the greatness that is Martin.

Great guitar for an intermediate player

By Andy Wilson

from Jackson, TN

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar from Guitar Center in Nashville, TN a few months ago. I've been playing for about 7 years or so, and have always been a Fender guy in both electrics and acoustics. I'll say first that this guitar blows away ANY Fender acoustic I've ever played, even their higher-end ones. If you're like me, and used to playing cheaper guitars (around the 200-300 range) this will be a HUGE upgrade. It plays like a dream, and sounds amazing. I honestly feel like it's made me a better player than I was before, just because its so easy to hit chords and everything sounds so good, it makes you want to keep playing and learning new stuff. I recommend getting a hard case and a humidifier with it to keep it in top condition. I've had 3 different sets of strings on it since I got it: D'Addario Light PB's, Medium PB's, and Custom Light 80/20's. So far I like the 80/20's the best. The brilliance and projection of the 80/20 string really complements the warm, mellow tones that Martins are known for. That's just a personal preference though, it sounds great with any strings you put on it... Hope this helps!

Best in class.

By Austin Ocheltree

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Despite what some enthusiastic new owners may say, this does not sound as good as Martin's classic series dreads and up (D-18,28,etc.), but that's not its purpose. What it is, however, is the best dreadnought in its price range. I've owned it for about 2 years now, and still enjoy playing it. By far the best tone you're going to get for this kind of money. If you're in the market for a great guitar on a budget, buy this!

Great Guitar

By keith patterson

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar eight months now and have been waiting for something to go wrong with it before I wrote a review. It hasen't happened. This guitar is wonderful in all respects. The tone is in a class all its self. Action is great right out of the box. I even used the strings that came with it for several weeks, and I play several hours a day. Don't let the composite wood fool you into thinking this guitar is of a lower quality. It is a Martin and sounds like a Martin. It will ruin you on playing anything else.

Excellent - Best Acoustic I have owned in 25 years.

By David Fordyce

from Franklin Ohio

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Really easy to play with great sound. However, When buying yours be sure to check it out as with any other guitar. I found 1 with a defective neck and 1 with defective pickups out of six of these guitars that I looked at. The one I took home was unbeatable but two of them would have been problematic.

2nd guitar needs work

By ANDREW MOXOM

from Woodbury Minnesota

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

So this is my 2nd DX1AE since November last year. The first one sounded great and played well, but when using a capo. It buzzed on quite a few frets. On closer inspection, it had a significant hump on the 12th and 14 fret as the richlite finger board contorted to the shape of the top. I returned it under the 30 day return policy and swapped it for a new one. This time, I tried a capo on it. It did not buzz, and the neck looked good and when I got the new one home, it played like a dream. The sound is superb, and the playability was also very good. The guitar continues to sound great, but last week, i heard my first buzz with a capo on 2nd fret. This time I am outside of the 30 day return policy. Now i will have to deal directly with an authorized dealer. It has not needed a set up, but i can see a noticeable hump much like the first one I had as the finger board follows the contour of the spruce top by the neck to body join... So i will take it to an authorized Martin dealer this time to have them see if its fixable under the warranty. I've been diligent with humidification as its dry here in the cold Minnesota winters. My house has a centralized humidity system and it averages 40 to 46% daily. So i am confident its been cared for correctly. I know its a lower end Martin with a sound way out of its price range, but i did expect more from Martin. The price is cheap for a Martin but is high end, and middle price for some guitar manufacturers.. So for the dough, the DX1AE is a great sound, and playable instrument. How well they hold up over the long term remains to be seen.... I hope that Martin will be good on their warranty, even for a low spec guitar. It has so much potential to be a superb guitar, its a shame about the quality control on the neck to body joins.

Great guitar for the price

By Roy C.

from Pittsburgh, Pa.

Comments about Martin X Series DX1AE Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I didn't buy this guitar because it sounds as good as a much higher priced Martin. I didn't buy this guitar because it is the same build quality as a higher priced Martin. And I sure didn't buy this guitar because it's smells good...as some other reviewer mentioned. I bought this guitar because it played and sounded better than any other guitar in it's price range. Sure, it has laminated back and sides and a stratabone neck which are not "real" wood but it has a Sitka spruce top and Fishman electronics that work well. It has a nice sound and is very easy to play. Mine was set up great right out of the box and I am extremely happy that I bought it. Also, I like the fact that the volume and tone controls are "hidden" in the sound hole. It keeps the overall appearance clean. Check one out at the nearest store and be prepared to carry it home.
