Martin Dreadnought
The very first dreadnought guitars were designed and crafted by C. F. Martin & Co. in 1916, but marketed in Boston and New York exclusively under the Oliver Ditson brand. Originally made for Hawaiian slide playing style, the very first dreadnought made was a Model 222 shipped to Ditson in August of 1916. After Ditson went out of business in the early 1930s, Martin introduced the D-1 and D-2 dreadnoughts for standard playing style that would soon become Martin’s iconic D-18 and D-28 models. Over the past 100 years, the Martin dreadnought has helped define what an acoustic guitar can and should be, and subsequently, it has become one of the most popular acoustic guitar designs in the world.

Great Guitar - Don't need Anything Else

By SteveHotlicks780

from Hastings, Michigan

Comments about Martin Vintage Series HD-28V Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Went to a bluegrass festival and seen a couple of these guitars. I could not believe the sound I was hearing coming out of these guitars. Strong, Clear, very responsive. I had to try one out and so I did. I liked it so much I traded my old Martin D-28 and Gibson J-45 in on brand new one. I have not been sorry for doing so this guitar has anwserd my long waited quest for the perfect guitar. I play it almost everyday. I love it.

HD28V ? The Best Martin under $5,000

By Perry

from Cammarillo, CA

Comments about Martin Vintage Series HD-28V Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Play a legendary HD28 and you?ll notice the rich tone that Martin is famous for. Play an HD28V (V stand for Vintage) and you?ll immediately notice the extra resonance, tone and the explosion of dynamic range that few guitars could ever match. The HD28V features the forward shifted X-Bracing. In the 1930?s the X Bracing intersected close to the sound hole. Because of the ultra heavy strings players used then, for volume, as there were no amplifiers or PA?s, the bridge would get pulled up. Martin compensated by moving the X-Bracing back towards the bridge. This has stayed the same up to and including the HD28?s of today. Because today?s players don?t usually exceed 13 gauge strings, shifting the X-Bracing forward to the sound hole, where it was originally, can be achieved without the bridge being pulled up. This difference in position of the X-bracing?s intersection is immediately noticeable. The tone is less restricted and more responsive as you play louder and louder. The V-shaped neck on this instrument fits right in the groove of the left hand, and plying this guitar is a dream. It is a player?s guitar; you won?t want to put it down. Another thing to look at is the Martin Quality! This guitar is put together amazingly. It goes to show what over 170 years of guitar making can do for a company. Afterall, Martin introduced the dreadnought guitar shape AND invented the X-Bracing pattern. If you are a serious acoustic player, songwriter, or you just want to own that one special guitar, you must experience this guitar!

You wont find a better acoustic

By Peter

from Eagan, MN

Comments about Martin Vintage Series HD-28V Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have been playing for 20 years and this is with out a doubt the finest guitar I have ever owned. I played a HD-28 at the store and really liked the tone. Saw reviews of the HD-28V and liked the vintage details in the guitar. I took a chance and ordered it. The tone was beautiful right out of the box, incredible. Having the scalloped X-bracing is really kool since it dates back to the 1920's and is thought by many guitarist to bring out the best tone, I agree. The right combination of woods help too. It really is the finest acoustic guitar I have ever heard. If you live in the midwest be sure to buy a guitar humifier for the dry winters to keep the wood in good shape and the tone sounding great.

HD28V Not Just Another Guitar

By Terry Brewer

from Bakersfield Ca

Comments about Martin Vintage Series HD-28V Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

My wife says that they all look and sound the same. Not the HD28V it has that extra tone. A real warm sound. Great reponce and volume. The v neck was a little wierd untill I started to play, it felt really good. Alot more stable feel. No finish air bubbles , a very nice guitar. I have fiends that play older martins amd hand made like noble, and this guitar compares very well to them right out of the box! If you try one give it a chance it will put a smile on your face, it did mine. For the extra money the HD28V is well worth it, with good action, tone, very crisp and clear sound. Im proud to say I own one. Even if my wife still says it looks like my other guitars. Try One

One of the best new Martins you can get!

By Big Mac

from Springfield, MA

Comments about Martin Vintage Series HD-28V Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

In 35+ years of playing, the HD-28V is one of the best out-of-the-box Martins I've found. I walked into a Guitar Center just to "kick some tires" and when I played the HD-28V, I bought it on the spot. This is the way dreads should sound - deep sonorous bass, clear mids with lots of overtones, subtle highs. Factory set up was fine altho I have replaced the bridge pins with bone and the Gotoh tuners with Waverlys because this is an heirloom-quality guitar. I did a side-by-side comparison with a 30-year old D-28 and the new HD was by far the better sounding instrument. (Read Perry's review below for a good explanation.) If you are looking for a vintage sound but can't manage the five-figure price tag for a real vintage Martin, I think you'll find what you are looking for in the HD-28V.

They keep getting better

By Jay Coleman

from Leesburg, FL

Comments about Martin Vintage Series HD-28V Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I had a D-28(1989) and thought it was the best ever. As good as it was this one is better, a tough feat. Everything about this guitar is superb. Old designs and modern techniques make for a great mix of old and new. Just look at it. Wait until you play it. Your own pre-war D-28 that doesn't cost 50 or 60k.

Incredible Sound

By Don't touch my Martin

from Rochester, MN

Comments about Martin Vintage Series HD-28V Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have been playing for about 11 years now and this is by far the best acoustic guitar I have ever played on. It has a very full bottom end and mid range and a slightly softer high end giving it a very smooth and mellow tone. The action on it is low and is very easy to play. Not only dose it sound and play great but it looks nice as well. Nothing too fancy, but the woods are beautiful. You won't find a better sounding guitar on the market.

Comments about Martin Vintage Series HD-28V Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Have owned many Martin's over the years. 1960s and 80s D-28s and D-18s. A mid 90's D35 and early 2000's 000-15. I know Martin's product quality, tone and craftsmanship pretty well. I'm also up to speed on their current production models. If you put aside their limited runs and authentic series, the HD28V is hands down C.F. Martin's finest production guitar. There is not a dreadnought on this planet that can touch it. I know elitist will be thinking "You haven't tried my $6000 Collings". Yes, actually I probably have. I've played many boutiques and many of them are very unique and amazing. So is the HD28V. The difference is that Martin's is delivering the HD28V for well under boutique pricing. It's phenomenal that they have managed to get this level of quality from a non custom shop guitar.
