Martin Dreadnought
The very first dreadnought guitars were designed and crafted by C. F. Martin & Co. in 1916, but marketed in Boston and New York exclusively under the Oliver Ditson brand. Originally made for Hawaiian slide playing style, the very first dreadnought made was a Model 222 shipped to Ditson in August of 1916. After Ditson went out of business in the early 1930s, Martin introduced the D-1 and D-2 dreadnoughts for standard playing style that would soon become Martin’s iconic D-18 and D-28 models. Over the past 100 years, the Martin dreadnought has helped define what an acoustic guitar can and should be, and subsequently, it has become one of the most popular acoustic guitar designs in the world.

Comments about Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I won't go into the changes made in 2012 to improve/modernize the D-18, others here who know more about it than me have already said it. Suffice it to say this is an incredible sounding guitar. I wanted to share my experience with two local Guitar Centers, in Alexandria and Fairfax VA, who's staff allowed me to audition every single D-18 they had in stock, a total of between 11 and 14 (I don't remember, it was a year ago...). They were incredibly patient as I discerned the finer points between all these guitars to discover they were incredibly consistent sounding and playing, kudos to Martin for incredibly consistent manufacturing and quality control. My only beef, and it is a small one, the action was uncomfortable for me (I am primarily a keyboardist...), the GC I purchased from offered a free setup but I decided to purchase a truss rod wrench (5mm) separately and tweak it myself. If you have weak hands/callouses like me, a quarter turn of the truss rod and a set of light gauge D'Addario Phosphor Bronzes will sacrifice a little tone, but do a lot for playability...

Comments about Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

My Dad was given a pre-war Martin D18 when he returned from WWII and started playing in a band with a local celebrity. The deal was, he had to play to work-off the cost of the guitar. Neither of them knew what was to become of this. As it turned out he got the guitar and kept it until a few years ago when he gave it to me. It needed a lot of work, but was still solid. I had it restored. And a few months ago I traded a few of my "low end" guitars and some cash for a new Martin D18....and let me tell you it sounds just as perfect.

Comments about Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I tried everything in the Martin line at a music store. The D-18 was the one. Oh yes, I tried everything else I could get my hands on in the same price range, but this had what I wanted. I went back to the store and it was gone. I took the leap of faith and bought one at Musician's Friend. I had always thought that I needed to play something before spending the cash. Very happy with my purchase. This one hadn't been handled by a hundred people at the store either. I think it's safe to buy a quality brand name guitar online now.

Comments about Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I know you've heard it before. "I've owned XYZ Guitars and this is the best" In my case I really have owned XYZ guitars and I've never been completely satisfied. That is, until now. I was in my local Guitar Center looking at the Memorial Day deals and passed by a D 18 on the wall. I've played them before and no big deal, but this time as soon as I strummed a chord I heard that sound which has been so elusive to me in the past. I traded two Taylors in on this one; a 610 and a 615, both great guitars, but now they can be great guitars for someone else. I've gone through four Gibsons, a Martin D 35 and an MMV, several Ovations, three Larivees and finally came back to a guitar that is less expensive than some, more expensive than others, but much more acoustically pleasing and easier to play than any I have owned. Nice neck, perfect intonation and Great quality to go with it. I couldn't be happier.

Comments about Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

This is my favorite acoustic guitar. I play a lot of fingerstyle without using picks, so I look for a guitar that will give a good bass response using my thumb only. This one does the trick. Guitar always stays in tune and sounds great. Also love the smell of the wood!

Comments about Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have a 2011 and a 2014 D-18. The newer guitar has the design changes that were made in 2012. These include an ebony fretboard and bridge, tortoiseshell pick guard and body binding, open butter bean tuners, forward shifted scalloped braces, and a 1 3/4" modified low oval neck with a high performance taper. I consider all of these changes to be good ones, with the exception of the new neck shape. I like the wider nut, but the neck just feels too shallow for my hand, causing fatigue and muscle cramps. Many people like this neck, as everyone has different sized hands. I would highly recommend playing one before purchase.

The sound makes it all worth it. I love the sound of my straight-braced older D-18, but the new one has a sparkle and shimmer that is wonderful. It is very light weight and resonant, with a good bass response. This is a lot of guitar for the price, and I don't really think that you can find a much better sounding model no matter how much you pay. But play both a straight braced older D-18 and a new one before you decide. I also like rosewood guitars, but this guitar takes a back seat to no one... .

              GREAT Service and GREAT Guitar

              By Jeffrey Hackett

              from Hialeah Florida

Comments about Martin Standard Series D-18 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I recently (yesterday) purchased this D-18 after playing it because the sound, feel, and overall beauty was there. I have a D-28 as well and it doesn't compare to the newer D18-2012. The first thing I noticed was the neck and how much slimmer and faster it was. I had previously owned a 1965 D-18 that had a "baseball bat" for a neck and was really tough to finger-pick. I will give Martin credit for the fact that they are making their guitars more playable as well as better sounding. I have over 40 years experience playing so I guess I am a pretty good judge when it comes to guitars. While everyone has their own tastes for what they are looking for in an acoustic guitar, I think most would agree that tone would be common with everyone. I will be installing the Fishman Matrix pickup system on this guitar as well as my other Martin. I purchased this guitar at the Hallandale Florida store and the salesman Bruce was very helpful as well as respectful and I thank him for that
