Overview

Martin’s Road Series line of guitars features a blend of the legendary Martin tone with solid-wood construction and lightning-fast playability. The Martin DRST2 Dreadnought acoustic electric guitar was designed for the player that is searching for deep, driving Martin tone at an affordable price.

Its all solid-wood construction produces a tone that will rival some of the most expensive guitars made today. To start with, Martin selected a Sitka spruce top as the basis of the tone engine. They chose Sitka spruce because it’s a very expressive tonewood that produces the right amount of tone, volume, and dynamics. To augment the crisp tone of the Sitka spruce, the back and sides is fashioned of Solid Sapele Mahogany. Sapele adds just the right amount of crispness and bass to the sound of the guitar.

Playability is a must for many of today’s musical styles, and Martin got your back. The DRS2 has one of the most comfortable necks on the market. The slimmer profile and taper lets you glide across the neck with ease. You will be able to make a smooth transition from your electric guitar to this acoustic. And as an added bonus, the DRS2 was precision setup with one of Martin’s Plek machines. As one of the last steps in final setup process, Martin uses the Plek machine to give you the ultimate guitar setup. If you were to have a technician Plek one of your guitars, it would cost you anywhere from $250-$400. Martin includes this bonus on every Road Series guitar for free. If you’re a fingerstyle player, professional, novice, or singer songwriter, you are going to love the way this guitar sounds and plays.

The Martin DRS2 comes complete with Fishman Sonitone electronics. This compact, easy-to-use electronics package lets you plug in and play. There’s no need for you to spend hours getting a great guitar sound. Just plug in, and you’re ready to go. For easy access, the volume and tone controls are positioned directly in the soundhole of the guitar. This gives you the ability to make changes to your tone in real time.

Martin Dreadnought
Martin invented the dreadnought guitar in 1916 for an East Coast music chain called the Oliver Ditson Company. Back then, players were using smaller, parlor-type guitars that featured more treble and midrange frequencies. Parlor guitars had bass, but it was balanced into the sound. These guitars responded more like a classical guitar, where all the tone was even and balanced. The dreadnought was designed to complement the balanced tone of a smaller instrument, by adding a bump to the bass of the guitar. Dreadnoughts are punchy, and offer payers a broad dynamic range. You can really hit a Martin dreadnought, and the sound will grow the harder you play. Play it softly with a vocal accompanist, and it will blend perfectly with your voice. If you’re playing in a band, The Martin dreadnought has got you covered with the right amount of bass, midrange, and treble. And it can get as loud as you can play. The combination of tonewoods and body produces an instrument that is extremely expressive and dynamic.

    Better Than I Expected

    By Guitarfreak

Comments about Martin Road Series DRS2 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I use mine to play with my group that plays and records Gospel and contemporary Christian music and playing at church. I said I would never order a guitar online because I would not buy a guitar I could not play before purchasing. I really wanted to try one of these but could not find one that was close to my location to play. Decided to take chance an order online since GC has such an awesome return policy. This is a really good guitar for the way they have these priced. I bought mine during a 15% off sale so I paid less than $750 including tax, and it comes with a nice case. Nothing fancy but sounds really like a Martin Dread should. I was wanting something that I could take out on our recordings and appointments that I was not so worried about getting a ding or scratch on. I have a Taylor 214ce dlx that I had been using but I wanted more of that full warmer sound of a Martin to mix with the rest of my group which also plays Martins. I love the feel of the richlite fret board, feels as good as the ebony on my Taylor and this guitar plays as good as the Taylor. The modified low oval neck feels really good. This model also has a solid wood neck. If you are considering purchasing one these as I did for quite a while I do not think you will be disappointed.

    Superb Value

    By Honestreviewer

    from Lexington, KY

Comments about Martin Road Series DRS2 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been playing guitar for enjoyment (not professionally) for 30+ years, and I was gifted with an ear for tone. I spent a month reading reviews, listening to YouTube videos of acoustic guitars, and made 3 trips to my local guitar center to play and really listen to what several sub-$1000 and much more expensive guitars sound like, and compare the different models before making a purchase. I have the means to spend $3000+ for an acoustic guitar, but I also like getting the most for my hard-earned dollar. I've always enjoyed finding the great values in whatever I have bought, from wine to whatever. The Martin DRS2 represents an incredible value if you are looking for the huge sound and tone that Martin guitars represent. I started many years ago with an Ovation, graduated to a Takamine G-series, and recently wanted to upgrade to a guitar that I could play and be happy with for the rest of my life without breaking the bank. After playing many brands, I came down to the huge tone that Martin guitars offer. A solid wood acoustic for under $1000 is not easy to find these days, with precious woods becoming harder and harder to source. If you are not tied to "made in USA" only products, then this guitar should be on your list to try. I am certainly glad that I did, and I am very happy with this guitar. I compared it in-store with the D-18 and D-28, and although these guitars were awesome, to my ear the DRS2 had such great tone, and was so close to these icons yet so much lower in price, that I went with it and I am so happy that I did. The craftsmanship in this guitar is excellent, and I am personally beyond guitar model, source and brand snobbery, so this beautiful, and beautiful-sounding guitar made sense to me. It is silly that Martin does not include a more modern end strap button. Do your homework, go play everything you can get your hands on, and make your own, well-informed decision. I'm glad that I did, and I'm really glad that Martin makes the Road Series guitars

Great guitar/ plays and sounds much more expensive

    By padgination

Comments about Martin Road Series DRS2 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had been wanting a Martin for quite a while, but never would let myself buy one because I don't make money playing. Well, I finally rat-holed some extra cash and went guitar shopping. I played every guitar in the store that was under $1000 and just kept coming back to this one(DRS2/spruce top). The tone and playability are outstanding and are as good or better than many much more expensive guitars. I wish I had indulged myself years ago. It was worth every penny.

Comments about Martin Road Series DRS2 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is by far a steal for the asking price. I played many high dollar guitars but kept going back to the DRS2. It sounded better than the $1300-$1800 range. I had $2000 saved to buy a really nice Martin but fell in love with the DRS2. I can't put it down. By far my favorite guitar in my collection.

    Awesomest

Comments about Martin Road Series DRS2 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I am a very finicky guitar player. If there is such a word as " Awesomest ", this would describe the Martin DRS2. I have literally never played a Martin that was this easy to play before. Martins usually have a neck that is on the " chunky side " which makes it a little hard to play because of my arthritis. They have trimmed down the neck on this so it's very fast. The Richlite fretboard is quite nice too. The tone is INCREDIBLE! One problem I usually have is that I put on a lighter gauge string 11-52 to make it a little easier on the fingers. With other guitars I've played, there is a noticeable decrease in volume as well as making it harder to keep the thinner strings in tune. Not the DRS2. There of course is a slight decrease in volume but it's really not that noticeable. It still projects incredibly well. And finally the intonation is PERFECT. With other guitars I usually struggle to keep the thinner strings in tune. I don't have to struggle with the DSR2. It just tunes and stays in tune. Very happy with this guitar. I would recommend using Ernie Ball Earthwood strings to get an INCREDIBLE sound from this guitar. The strings that come with it are not as bright. And I suppose that would be subject to your own ear. This is I think the very first " All Solid Wood " Martin they have made available for under $1000.00

Comments about Martin Road Series DRS2 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I loved everything about it except the fact that it came with uninstalled strap button which is very unusual for a Martin in my opinion. There's a hole in the heel and I had to put the button myself. Looked different on the pictures as well. Having second thoughts on whether to exchange it for a drs1. Will drop by GC soon.

Comments about Martin Road Series DRS2 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I really like the all wood construction, the balance of the guitar and the wood grain. The stays in tune and has the Martin tone to it.
I went to purchase a Taylor, then noticed the DRS2 and decided to play it. I kept switching between the Taylor and the Martin, then the confusion came so I left without buy a guitar. I returned two hours later as I was hooked on the Martin! Buy it and you will not regret.

I recently paid a visit to the Roseville, Ca GC and tried every Martin under $1000.00. This was by far the best choice in my opinion. I have had it for a week and it feels like I have had it for years. I currently own, a Taylor 114E,a Gretsch Resonator and an Epiphone PR5E. This one surpasses them all. I would recommend anyone to try this guitar if looking for a quality acoustic/electric.

Comments about Martin Road Series DRS2 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been strumming for close to 40 years. First with a Yamaha, then a Seagull. I'm a front porch kind of guy and I like to write. My son broke my Seagull about 10 years ago. I had it fixed. The man who fixed it predicted the action would grow much worse over time. The repair rendered it unajustable. I didn't know how bad until I went to GC and started fooling around with several different guitars. Almost went with a Taylor, but the Martin is solid wood for a lot less and I love the warm sound. Very pleased with the DR2 and I have no intentions of sharing it. In fact, my son doesn't know I have it!
