Overview

The Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Guitar has a grand performance style body constructed with solid tonewoods. The back and sides are matched from African sapele, similar in appearance and tone to mahogany. Bookmatched Sitka spruce soundboards utilize Martin's Hybrid "A-Frame" scalloped bracing.

The GPCPA4 features a slim, more parallel taper at the 12th fret, allowing for a more comfortable playing width up the neck. The bridge spacing is also modified to 2-3/16 in. - splitting the difference between Martin's two traditional spacings.

Along with the look, feel, and enhanced performance of Martin's existing Performing Artist Series models, the GPCPA4 has the simplified Fishman F1 Analog electronics system. Includes case.

I bought this guitar to play out with at open mics and acoustic gigs...First off it really feels like a Taylor when you pick it up..and thats a good thing, I love Taylor playability but their guitars in this body style are just too bright for me...I own a Taylor DN3 which is well balanced..The electronics are super simple ( aura analog vs F1)..its really plug and play. The guitar turns into a Martin the minute you strum your first chord..nice and warm. GREAT tone. So Taylor playability and Martin tone = perfect guitar..Fit and finish is top notch and for the price I challenge you to find a better deal..Taylor's version is several hundred dollars more..The only way you dont like it is your a Taylor drone or an obsessed Martin traditionalist who cant live with a Martin guitar that looks like a Taylor..lol p.s. the new PA series neck is so amazing I might just save up for the 28 with the new neck..

I looked at this guitar for quite a while before purchasing it, but I probably did not do enough due diligence in playing it plugged in and comparing it to some other models before I bought it. Unplugged the guitar has an ok tone, it seemed to open up the more time you spend playing, but it didn't quite have the full tone I was expecting from a Martin. It sounded better with light strumming or fingerstyle playing, but the bass sounded pretty weak during moderate to heavy strumming. I wasn't a fan of the F1 analog system as it doesn't allow a separate bass or midrange adjustment. It gives you a preset range to adjust how much scoop is applied, but you really can't fine tune it as much as with the F1 aura system. I found the analog system to sound very "spanky" on the higher strings when strumming, even with the settings adjusted for an increased bass response. Overall, I was not impressed with the plugged in tone, which is a must for an acoustic-electric. You shouldn't need to buy an EQ pedal to get the sound that you want from a new acoustic-electric. I would recommend taking look at a PA3 series model or higher. Ultimately, I settled on a Taylor 416ce. It has a great low end tone, excellent adjustable electronics, and a very smooth action. I have always been a fan of Martin guitars and I tried to like the GPCPA4, but from the one that I briefly owned I found that it didn't stand up to what I was looking for in a new acoustic-electric.

Great guitar for the price

By Colin Jones

from Lansford , PA

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar was my first Martin...sad to say I only live a half an hour from the Martin Factory and I just bought one now...With that said...The sound of the GPCPA4 more than rivals the sound of my Uncles D28. Like all Martins, the action is smooth and very light weight. I manage a quality department in another field and i would know how impoertant how reviews are...This axe is a gem! I've owned several different EAs through out the years, including several USA made Guilds, a Gibson Songwriter and a Taylor Ce 314...This guitar's sound if unbeleiveable both unplugged and plugged in...A Great buy!

Update..

By JOHN TRAYNOR

from Bronxville NY

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is only getting better..My only wish is that it actually had the F1 Aura Pickup system. The analog is very simple but a bit quack prone. I tried to figure a way to upgrade because Im never getting rid of the guitar, but I never cam across a resonable way..So I bought the fishman spectrum pedal.. Wow what a difference.. The spectrum takes some time to dial in but its magic once you do..

Love it

By Mark McGee

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have owned a Guild F47, a Taylor 310CE Koa wood, and a few otheres. This is my first review on a guitar. Just want to say, I love this guitars full sound. I read alot of reviews and its hard to tell just how a guitar compairs to another. I wont say this is better then the others (for you), just that I like the tone and depth of this one more, for me. Its easy to play, sounds deep and beautiful, and simple yet beautiful looking. Try it out. I think it beats the other two I listed. The guild was a looker but didn't come close to this and its 2800, the Taylor was to bright (If thats the right word, because bright is a good thing) and this one like the small bear in Goldielocks was just right.

Incredibly happy with this USA made beast!

By Taylor Vandenhoek

from San Luis Obispo, CA

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have always been a fan of Martin but have never really played too many. I ordered this guitar offline and had it shipped purely off of reading reviews. I can now confirm that all the reviews that say this are correct. I know its a dumb thing to do, but i didn't even get a chance to play it before i ordered it since the closest store that carried it was 4 hours away. Opening the box the first thing i noticed was that the case was black, not brown like guitar centers site describes. I was actually pretty happy about this since i prefer the black. The case is decent quality, plus it also has a sexy green liner. Pulling the guitar out was like 100 Christmas mornings all in one. Trust me, the difference between a US made martin definitely shows. The action is incredible straight out of the box. I tuned her up and a few chords later i felt like i was laying in a field with the warm honey from a million bees pouring down upon my unclothed body. The sound is perfect. Incredibly balance between the warm, full bass and the clean crisp treble. I LOVE this guitar. I've converted to a Martin lover. I can't say much about the electronics because i don't currently have an acoustic amp, but they are very discreet in the body which i love since there isn't a large cut out in the side of the guitar.

Perfect Martin

By Ian O'Kelly

from Arvada, Colorado

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar has a wonderfully bright, rich tone and sounds just as good when amplified. However, I have found the built-in tuner to be slightly inaccurate, and a little difficult to properly use. Other than that, this guitar excels in all categories and will always be one of my favorite acoustic guitars.

Just a tad disappointed

By TAN ALEX

from Austin TX

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The guitar is good and i love it. The only disappointing part is that the hard case that comes with it wasn't exactly the right color. The specifications i pulled out from a few websites suggest that its a Brown case but what i got from the box was black.

perfect for me!

By steve shillingburg

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was looking for something slightly smaller than my hubby's D28V, I just couldn't get used to the wide Vneck and the dreadnaught body so huge compared to my mandolin that I am use to. But I am spoiled on the beautiful sound of his D28v and I wanted a great Martin sound also. It isn't as deep as the D28v but the sound is clear and the harmonics are beautiful, the neck is slim and I can handle this nicely. I really love it and wouldn't trade it for anything else!

The sound from this guitar is flat out amazing, it's beautiful. I play pretty darn good, but this takes the playing to a whole new level. Plugged into an amp or not, this is an awesome guitar. I play fingerstyle ( Bensusan, Tommy, Chet....etc.) This is exactly the tone I was looking for. It plays like butter and makes me grin. Wow! This is a very special guitar!

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar sounds amazing and I absolutely love the feel of this guitar. The neck face is a little wider than my other acoustic guitars, making it a little more easier to play for me. I can't get over how nice this guitar is.

Now for something that bothers me a little.

When I first got the guitar shipped, the black case (not brown) was damaged and I had to drive to guitarcenter and return it. Also the guitar had what looks like one dent, filled in from the gloss and finish. So I took that back and got another one ordered and shipped to the house.

The 2nd guitar case was perfect, and when I inspected the guitar, it had 4 what appeared like "dents" in the wood. After doing some research, I heard from several guitar boards that this is normal, especially in higher Martin guitars? I would like to get one without this, and it would have been nice if they stated this in the ad, but I'm not going to keep driving an hour and a half away to return the guitar to guitarcenter and then wait 3 days for my replacement to arrive. Maybe it will grow on me later on, but we'll see.

This is a warning for those who don't like "bearclaw" markings on a guitar.

However, besides that, this guitar is by far the best I've ever played. I would recommend this guitar to others.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had a desire to spend up to two grand on and asked the opinions of my friends on Facebook. I said I wanted an acoustic-electric guitar, one whose strings are bendable, so it should sound nice, but still warm with light strings, sounds good even when it's not amplified, but rocks when amped (think "Ziggy Stardust"), a built-in tuner would be nice but not a necessity, and is ideal for for both a picken' and a strummin', what would be your dream guitar? All the answers were either Martin or Taylor, and either would have it the bill. In the end, I purchased this one about six weeks ago, and it ticks every box, including the built-in tuner. I fall in love with it a little bit more every day. I love the sound of it, and the smell. Yes, the smell, as crazy as that sounds! The sweet smell of freshly cut wood. I know that won't last forever but I'm diggin' it while it does. This guitar is giving me an experience that is so much better than I had with the under $200 acoustic I bought about thirty years ago. That guitar was difficult to play, and ultimately frustrated me so much that I simply stopped playing guitar. I'm so sorry i did. Had I bought a really nice guitar like this one I would have had more fun and stuck with it. Well, thanks to this guitar and a nice Fender strat I got a couple of years ago, I am now having fun and sticking with it. I feel like a kid again. If you are just starting out on guitar, do all you can you get a nice one, and this is a nice one. If you are an experienced player, this guitar has everything you'd want to sound great live.

The most beautiful guitar I've ever owned. Very playable - and always sounds so good. I have an ear for a note or chord too sharp or flat - and this guitar sounded pitch perfect right out of the box without any professional setup required. I paired it with a Marshall AS100D and couldn't be happier.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Before buying this beauty I spend about 2 years actively searching for the one. My goal was to buy 1 ultimate guitar and keep it forever. I've tried all the major brands and really did my research in respect to tone and playability, I actually thought I would be spending more and tried many more expensive guitars, until I tried the GPCPA4 and unexpectedly felt like all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.
That incredible rich Martn tone and somehow this one sounded fuller than others, combined with excellent playability all this for way less than expected! The guitarcenter tech improved the already great standard setup.

It's been a year since I bought my GPCPA4, I've been playing it daily, it's been on 2 flights (great case) every time I play it, it's an inspiration. I take good care of it, I treat it right, because this guitar will need to last a lifetime!
