Overview

The Martin GPCPA1 acoustic-electric guitar combines that world-famous Martin sound with the contemporary playability of an electric guitar. Its unique body design blends a tight waist with a deep body. The end result is a tone that is well-defined, plus a massive amount of power and projection. Its solid Sitka spruce top is braced perfectly to give you a rich, full-bodied tone that is versatile enough for any musical situation. The body is rounded out with solid East Indian rosewood back and sides to add the right amount of warmth and projection.

As the pinnacle of the Martin Performing Artist Series, this GPCPA1 was crafted to be a “players dream.” The GPCPA1 features a very playable mahogany neck with a Performing Artist neck taper. This precision-cut neck boasts a solid ebony fingerboard with abalone arrows and square position markets, and a 1-3/4 in. nut width, to give you the right amount of spacing between the strings.

Looking for electronics? The Martin GPCPA1 comes complete with an onboard Fishman F1 Aura+. This revolutionary pickup system is shipped from the factory in the "Easy Mode." Easy Mode gives you four factory presets: the traditional under-the-saddle pickup, and three sound images of the GPCPA1 played through some of the finest world-class microphones on the planet. All you have to do is plug-in and play. You’ll have a studio-quality sound right out of the box.

For those who prefer to design their own sound, the GPCPA1 has a Performance Mode. Performance Mode has nine world-class sound images, a dual three-band EQ, nine different types of compression, the ability to set the blend between the sound of the guitar and microphone image, and an anti-feedback eliminator.

This instrument integrates state-of-the-art electronics, striking aesthetic features, and incredible playability in an instrument that will not only inspire you to play, but be the perfect addition to any fine guitar collection.

Includes hardshell case.

This guitar is nothing less than stellar. It plays well, sounds awesome, has the correct tone woods, is beautiful with its all wood body and neck bindings, the inlays are phenomenally beautiful and F1+ preamp is wonderful.

It took me 4 trade ups to get this instrument and I am so glad I finally got it. Beginning with an OM-1GT to a Breedlove Atlas dred to a Martin GPCPA4 Jumbo Rosewood to finally ending at this instrument. Each step up better than the previous.

The only small problem I had was learning how to use the F1+ preamp. The documentation included with the guitar was for the Aura F1 (no plus). Once I found the correct video explaining F1+ preamp, it all came together and works perfectly. Here is that link for you:

I totally am in love with this one. I hope I keep it until the end. I wish I could afford to keep all those other guitars and not trade up at all. But, if you have to only have 1 Acoustic electric, then this would be the grand daddy of them all to have.

Purchased in Oct 2015 and started having problems first part of Nov. and now its January and the problem continues. Martin customer service is terrible. They just keep giving me the run around and sending me to different service centers. I have owned this guitar for 3-1/2 months but it has been in my possession for maybe 3 weeks. Stay away from this one.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 Plus Grand Performer Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I finally found a Martin that I could love. I always thought that if a Martin could be crossed with a Taylor then it would have the sound I was looking for. The bonus is that it is beautiful. I am really impressed with Fishman Aura + lots of sound choices.
I love the performing artist neck. Makes it easy to play bare cords. The action could be lowered a bit as I usually play finger style and don do any heavy strumming

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 Plus Grand Performer Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have played many different acoustic/electrics and with the GPCPA1+ this instrument continues to have my appreciation for its sound and craftsmanship. I use Martin Retro 10's , Plugged into a Fishman Artist amplifier and with the Fishman Aura pickup they both compliment each other. Unplugged it's just as sweet with well balanced sound on the high and low end. Every time I pick it up I'm inspired and grateful by this guitar. I receive many compliments from my band mates and fellow musicians on the sound quality. It's a keeper folks !

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 Plus Grand Performer Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I wanted to treat myself as I turned 50. What could be better than an American-made MARTIN GUITAR? I started my quest with the big dreads--D35, D41, etc. But then again, I really liked the OM models. So many options to choose from! I wanted a fancy headstock and a 1 3/4" nut and electronics. I hadn't even considered the newer models but then I saw this online and it seemed to tick all the boxes. It truly does! It looks great; the body size is small enough not to have that super-loud dreadnought sound, but it still has the bassy richness and balance that are hallmarks of Martin guitars.

I had to educate myself on what the "GPCPA1 PLUS" model name meant. This is truly a new model that combines the best of Martin with a nod to the competition from that "T" company out West. I think that Martin's got a real winner here. If, like me, your goal is to own just one Martin guitar that combines top quality with strumming and fingerpicking and soloing playability plus electronics plus great looks, I would say that this is definitely a guitar to consider.

Let me say, too, that the assistance and support of Musicians Friend Private Reserve was really terrific. If you buy this or any Private Reserve guitar, call in, rather than just buying online. They did a setup for me; I was able to choose the strings I wanted. It was really a great experience all around.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 Plus Grand Performer Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

My 4th Martin, I have a 1971 D35 (my first bought it in 1974), a D28, D18' and a 0001R along with several excellent sounding Signa Martins so I wanted a Taylor but after playing all the Taylor's in the Guitar Center store (including the 814ce) the salesman then said "now play this one" (the GPCPA1)and Oh My while it has some of the Taylor-es sound it's got the richest sound of any I've owned and played including an Olson that James Taylor once owned. In a nut shell this is the one that any serious Guitarist should own!

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 Plus Grand Performer Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This was my first serious Acoustic and I fell in love with it when I first picked it up. Did have the setup change by a local custom builder and made it play even better. The only thing I can say negative about this guitar is the 1 3/4 neck width along with the performing artist neck. Which is more on me because my short fingers. Not much of a problem with open chords but did give me issues on bare chords. Was a sad day when I traded this guitar for an HD-28, but I needed a thinner neck. Played my GPCPA1 for three years before letting it go. The guitar always drew great comments from others.

              GPCPA1

              By Guittarr

              from Madison

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 Plus Grand Performer Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The GPCPA1 is one of Martin's sonic works of art and beauty. The cocobolo model has a one-piece mahogany neck, whereas the neck of the rosewood model is made from 2 pieces of mahogany. The fingerboard and bridge of the cocobolo and rosewood models are made of ebony and Richlite, respectively. (Richlite is made of recycled paper mixed with phenolic resin; this is cheaper than ebony and probably contributes to the price difference between these two models.) Although the appearance of ebony and Richlite is slightly different, I could not find any difference in terms of feel and playability of these two different fingerboards.

Acoustically, both of these 2 GPCPA1 models produce full, rich, clear, natural sounds, but quite different from each other – the cocobolo model has a darker tone somewhat similar to my D-35 Seth Avett (or any Martin D-35 I played before), whereas the rosewood model is slightly brighter-sounding, to a certain degree reminiscent of Taylor 814ce or Gibson J-29.

Electrically, played either through the AER MM200 Monte Montgomery or through the Fishman SA220, they also sound super-great, but (in contrast to their acoustic sounds) very similar to each other, although the slightly enhanced acoustic brightness of the rosewood model appears to be transferred into its electric sound. The bottom line is, if you are looking for a flawlessly sounding and playing acoustic guitar, the GPCPA1 cocobolo and rosewood models are undoubtedly two of them.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 Plus Grand Performer Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I'm glad Martin errs on the high side... you can't put material back into the nut, folks! I don't know why people would be willing to shell out this kind of money for a guitar and not pay for a proper set up.

I've always been more of a fingerpicker, so the action was a little high for me initially. Proper setup resolved this and this guitar was MADE for me... So much fun to play that I can't wait to get home and head for the music room. I've been able to take on much more challenging music because of this beautiful instrument. I did a lot of research before taking the plunge, and I have several other guitars I could be playing... but this is my favorite.

For those that have questions about the manufactured material for the bridge and fret board... the richlite material is very comfortable to play. I am an older player and have arthritic hands, so my hand strength is not what it used to be. I was worried the fret board would be more difficult, but it absolutely has not been an issue.

This guitar sounds beautiful unplugged or plugged in and I take it with me to open mics frequently where it is plugged into a variety of amps/sound systems. For home, I have a Fishman amp and an audio interface that I plug in to. I was very impressed with the sounds I get when recording this guitar... even when recording direct without external mics.

This guitar is a thing of beauty. I just can't believe it's actually mine!

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA1 Plus Grand Performer Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Excellent sound and playability. The neck profile is slightly wider and the fretboard flatter than my Gibson accoustic but after a couple of days I got in to it. Sound wise, unplugged it has more ... well, it has more than the Gibson. A bigger sound - more of everything. Much more pleasing to listen to. It puts a big smile on my face everytime I pick it up.

I've been plugging it in to an Edirol FA-66 sound card and recording on my laptop using Logic. I keep the logic settings pretty vanilla because the guitar really doesn't need any help. When you read about the electronics it sounds complicated, or I thoght so at least, but it only took a few minutes use to get to grips with it. There are a couple of instructional videos that help a lot.

It's not cheap but I have absolutely no regrets about buying it. Worth the money IMHO.

On a different topic - I live in the UK and worried about making such a substantial purchase from an internet company that I knew very little about in another continent, but I've got to say the whole thing went very smoothly. It took about 8 days from me hitting the buy button to it being delivered. I'd be happy to buy from Musician's Friend again. No question.
