I got this at the Reno GC in April, 2015. As an older learner, I wanted a guitar that is much better than my level that I can grow into. This one is perfect. It is better than many of my friends guitars that they have had for years. They always want to play mine when they visit.

It is comfortable (I am tall, so the dreadnought is a perfect fit), has great action after getting it set up, and stays in tune. I enjoy both fingerpicking and strumming this beauty. It can take both soft and hard playing and give you what you want.

I've played a D35 and no, this isn't the same. That is a much better-sounding guitar that is also much more expensive. With that said, I would be hesitant to taking that one anywhere for fear of its safety. The DCPA 5 is tough, great sounding and fits a great niche for me as I learn.

I really like the electronics and got a little Fishman amp to play it on. It sounds great on it.

In conclusion, this is a great guitar. My novice abilities are what holds it back, not what it is. I look forward to learning more on it and hopefully performing more with it.

I have owned mine for 9 months, and during that time I would keep it in a case when I wasn't playing. About 2 weeks ago I notice some buzzing around the 12-15 frets. The neck has begun to warp out bad. And as I was looking down the neck I noticed my back was coming unglued from the sides. The HPL reminds me of a cheap coffee table. The top is nice and it sounds good, but in 9 months it's falling apart. I would be furoius if I didn't have pro coverage.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series DCPA5 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this as an affordable solid performing guitar and am very glad I did. I am an experienced performer and this fits my needs without worry of the effects weather can have on an all natural wood instrument. The materials and workmanship are superb and the electronics are very clear and crisp yet deep at the same time. I know that from novice to pro you will like this guitar. Get it and enjoy yourself!!!

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series DCPA5 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have only been playing guitar for about one year. I have a Gibson J-15 that I bought earlier in the year after getting rid of a cheap guitar. I wanted a Martin as well. I played several at the Akron Guitar Center and decided on the DCPA5 because of its modest look; great sound; and reasonable price. I was a little apprehensive because of the HPL laminate sides and back as opposed to solid wood. However, I can assure you that the sound is every bit as good as the Gibson that I have that is solid wood. In addition, the DCPA5 sounds great on a small acoustic amplifier. The built in tuner and amp phase selector are very nice to have too.

I am just a beginner, but to my ear, the DCPA5 is everything I wanted. I hope this helps some of you that are on the fence because of the laminate back and sides. The sound is outstanding.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series DCPA5 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I'm a mid 40's beginner guitar player. I've been around guitars for two decades but haven't learned to play. I've always admired the rich full sound of Martin guitars and have wished to own one. As my children are taking a more active interest in guitar I thought it would be great to learn with them. I selected this guitar based on it's rich full tone and am 110% pleased with my purchase. Every time I open the case I'm impressed with this guitar, I may have bought more than a beginner needs but I love the quality and sound. This guitar is a thing of beauty.
A note about HPL (high pressure laminate) If you're concerned about HPL in a guitar, don't be. As I have a carpentry background, I can tell you, HPL is a very robust product that is often many times stronger than solid wood. It also creates a more balanced density without the variation found in solid wood fibers. HPL is still wood but uses pressure and laminations combined with an epoxy type glue that makes the material very durable. Executed correctly, and this guitar is done right, HPL is a durable, robust, and stable platform, better able to stand up to the rigors of travel and daily use.
In closing, I love this guitar. I play it every day and learn something new each day. It is a joy and treasure.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series DCPA5 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar since I was in elementary school, played many different guitars, and I have to say I always come back to this one. This is my go to guitar whether it's a small venue, jamming with friends, practicing, sitting by the bonfire, and everything between. This guitar isn't one you hang up on a wall and admire all day for its looks, not to say it's ugly, but it's plain. For me this guitar is all about function over fashion, and at this price point you don't need to baby it yet it will perform right along with higher end guitars. A great guitar for someone looking to get a higher end guitar without breaking the bank.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series DCPA5 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I spent 3 hours in the Dallas Guitar center and auditioned and played all of the Martins and Taylor's under $1500, amplified and straight acoustic, and this one is the winner. Price per tone this model is the bomb! I thought it sounded better than the Martins at twice the price. It has a very full and open woodsy tone. It is very basic looking, but when I play out, even if my strings are going dead, this beauty sounds great and I almost always get a compliment on the tone from other musicians or audience members. It is a much more balanced tone than the Taylor's overall, although if you like the punchy highs, this may not fit your liking. I just wish Martin would throw in a nice Gig bag like Taylor, but I bought a nice hardshell case for $80 that does the trick. Bottom-line: if you like a full, balanced, and earthy acoustic tone, you don't mind that it is made in Mexico and has plain looks, for everyday use or playing out, this gem is well worth every penny. Don't even hesitate to buy this one.
