FIVE STARS PLUS

By walt young

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Note: My GPC is a GPC PA4R but with an OM shape body. I have not shopped for a nice acoustic in a few years. I was looking for something in a lesser price range actually. While shopping at a GC store I went through several nice acoustics and finally came to the Martin section. There were about three selections of this model. Each were about $100 apart. When I got to this Rosewood model that was it. Richlite fretboard? What is that? I looked up Richite on line and found that Richlite is a strong, durable, scratch resistant, unbreakable, and dense material. They make kitchen counter tops out of it amongst other things. I was skeptical about it but after looking it up I have no problem with it. It looks a lot like ebony. Out of the box I found the setup perfect. I did not need to lower the saddle or nothing. This Fishman electronics has two simple knobs and a round tuner window. I don?t care for the big EQs wacked into the side of a nice guitar. This has the bare bones look.. The tone is bright and full. Good balance between the strings playing chords and lead runs sound really sharp and clean. Maybe the hard Richlite fretboard adds to that. I like a mellow jazzy sound with the treble cut back and this does that well. This is a hot pickup it has lots of volume. You should get a pretty nice sound through just about any PA system you are confronted with on the open mic tours. I had to look around to find what the phase selection on the tone button did. Apparently if you are getting feedback you push the tone button and it adjusts the tone till the feedback is resolved. When you press the volume button you get a tuner in the round window. The tuners are good and hold tune. The big buttons are a nice touch. I like the satin finished back and sides and the polished gloss top. The spruce top on mine is a nice piece of spruce. The neck has 1 3/4 inch nut and is slightly different than the modified C shape necks you?ll find on the standard Martins. It is quite comfortable to play. I needed to adjust the truss rod a bit. It takes a long 5mm hex wrench for that. The guitar does not come with one. When you register your guitar ask Martin where to get one. (Hint) The quality of the finishing, fret detail, body joints and everything on this guitar is superb. For example the fret board joint to the neck is non distinguishable. It looks like one piece even thou its different colors. Martin is one American company that still puts out a quality made guitar even though it hast to adjust a few things to keep in the market. I have never seen a Martin instrument without attention to detail. I replaced the factory bridge pins with Tusq pins they fit perfectly. The only other thing I might later add is a bone nut. But for now it's fine. This is the first I have been excited with an acoustic guitar since I bought my first D28 that has been gone for several years. Plugged in this guitar is stunning. I play a lot of country, swing, and light jazz. This guitar nails all of it. If you are a solo performer you will love this guitar to no end.

Amazing guitar with the perfect sound for me.

By Matthew Machusick

from WC, PA

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I decided it was time to replace my acoustic guitar that I've had for 20 yrs. It just isn't cutting it anymore. I started out with a budget much lower than the GPCPA4. I went out and played as many guitars as I could find from a range of prices. At first it was overwhelming trying to compare and contrast all the options...but slowly I narrowed in on the shape, style, size, and woods that I liked. The first model i liked was a Taylor 210CE. Then it was a Martin GPCPA5. But i wasn't sure. Until a salesmen put the GPCPA4-Rosewood in my hand. After the first note, I knew it was the guitar for me. The tone, feel, sound, style and look were just what I wanted. The only problem was the price tag...way over my budget. So I continued the search, but couldn't duplicate the sound. So I hemmed and hawed, sold a bunch of stuff on Ebay and craigslist and clicked buy. So far (~1 month) I'm convinced its worth every penny. The quality, sound, feel and tone are great. Plus its made in my home state (which means a lot to me). Features: the electronics sound good, close to the acoustic sound, not perfect but good enough for me. It comes with an awesome case. I like the placement of the battery, the strap buttons, and controls. Quality & Reliability: Seems good so far. Look & Feel: To me it looks great. The spruce top is bright and smooth. The rosewood is deep and rich. The finish is light and not overly glossy. Overall its a classic look, not fancy or flashy, just solid and smooth. Overall, it is the sound/tone that sold me. The rosewood sounds full, rich and smooth. I play bass guitar also and I wanted a full bass sound for my guitar. The rosewood really helps with the bass (as does the size/shape of the guitar). But it doesn't stop there. The mids and treble sound clear and precise. They don't get drowned out. More than anything the guitar doesn't sound tinny or metallic...I hate that metallic sound of some guitars. this one does't sound metallic its full and rich. Loving it.

Upgrade your guitar and upgrade your playing

By CLAY MARTIN

from Louisville, KY

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been looking to upgrade my acoustic for almost a year. I am left handed, so I didn't have the opportunity to play a lot of different models. Fortunately, I am an identical twin, and my right handed twin brother test drove some stuff for me at the Guitar Center. I was looking at a Taylor 114ce, which Guitar Center had left handed and it played nice, and it came with a gig bag. The Martin was priced $400 higher than the Taylor, but it had the onboard tuner and it came in a hard case. When I asked the sales guy what the true difference was he pointed at the Taylor and said, "Laminate", then at the Martin and said, "Solid Wood." SOLD!!! The guitar is beautiful and the tone is simply incredible. It even smells good. You will be a better player instantly just because you will "sound" better. Spend the extra money and get the guitar you will never have to trade up from. I am really glad I did. You won't regret spending a little more to get something you can play proudly for the rest of your life. Also, for all my lefty friends, Martin is a left friendly company. Every model that I have looked at can come lefty, and I have not gotten that feeling from any other manufacturer.

Only a Martin

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Some People may think I'm ( and some of My Friends that Play Martins ) a Martin snob .... LoL OK ... Maybe I am but I've been a Guitarist for 51 years now and own a few ( My Wife says too many ) Guitars. I've played them all I believe and Martins are by far the very best. I just last Feb. bought a New Martin GPCPA-4 Rosewood and I LOVE IT !!!! The neck feels like My David Gilmour Strat, the tone is surely Martin and the Electronics are great. Like a real Musician, I'm not made of Money and this Guitar Plays and sounds like it should cost 3 X's the price. Maybe I shouldn't say that but If You are truly serious about Your Music as I am, My Friends .... This Guitar is for YOU ... Hands down the best working Mans Guitar. I'm a Studio/Session Guitarist and I'm very happy to have this Axe in My arsonal..... ~Pepper Roberts~

Pure Pleasure

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

A couple weeks ago, I played every guitar in the store, in this price range and much higher. I settled on this guitar for it's playability, and tone. I was expecting to spend much more but I kept coming back to this one. It's feel on the neck is amazing, you can't put the thing down and the overall sound this guitar makes is perfect, and I mean perfect. I don't use the on-board P/U much but it does sound like it should, I guess through my Orange Tiny Terror, with some tweaking, I need something more for acoustics. The tuner is pretty good when I compared it next to my Peterson Strobe, not perfect but close enough for the girls I know.. And the Craftsmanship is second to none, These Martin Guys & Gals make beautiful instruments, the workmanship is flawless. Get the Rosewood over the standard and you will be very happy with the deep bottom end tone. Much better tone than the Taylor counterpart IMHO..

After playing for years, I was in search of a big name guitar. I went to GuitarCenter with a mission to find what i like best. After playing the Breedloves, Taylors, Martins and Gibsons, I felt that this Martin was the best of all. The tone is amazing and it plays great. I was sure I would walk out with the Taylor from my previous experiences with them, but something kept gravitating me to the Martin. The tone is rich and it plays nice. Great neck. Feels like my Fender Strat. You will not be disappointed in this guitar.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

After playing different guitars for hours at the store, I kept going back to the Martin and could not put it down. I had come in for a Taylor but after playing the Martin I don't even like the sound of the Taylor anymore, not in this price range anyway. Some people love it though. I like the warm tone of the Martin versus the brightness of the Taylor but you need to play them and see what speaks to your soul.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was getting ready to retire soon, and thought; I had always wanted to get a good guitar to replace the cheap one I always seemed to own and, if I were retired, I would have time to play it. I decided to play every guitar I have always thought of as potentially excellent, so I asked friends, looked on line, etc. and then it was time to play them. I had by then narrowed it down to Gibson, Taylor, Breedlove, and Martin. I had a budget at the time - I did not want to go over $900 for this guitar. After comparison of the ease of play, the tone, the quality of how it was made, the appearance, Martin won hands down - where other guitars had laminate included, I found a Martin DRS2 which was built of only solid woods and in the price range I had set for myself. I was in heaven after retirement, and I know my playing improved from the first note on. Then it hit me - if this Martin was such a quantum leap above the cheaper guitars I had been playing, were the more expensive Martins that much better to cost that much more? I went hunting again, and found the GPCPA4 - in my opinion, all Martin guitars sound good; all Martins are easy to play, with great action and tone; however, this one just fit my hands like it was custom made for them. I had recently had knuckle replacement surgery in my left hand and thought I would never be able to play bar chords again, but this guitar allows me to bar - the tone of the guitar is fantastic (I have had 2 professional musicians ask to play it after they heard it, and one of them said he was going to probably purchase one within the week, in between gigs) and, after some experimentation with the internal electronics, I am very happy playing it through my amp as well. I cannot see anyone purchasing this guitar being unsatisfied with it for any reason - I am scaring myself by thinking, "If this Martin is such a quantum leap over the cheaper Martin, are the ones which are more expensive than this one that much better than this one?" Maybe...

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom GPCPA4 Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I had a cedar top Alvarez, which I thought sounded nice until I heard this Martin. No comparison in sound. I had called the sales person with whom I had dealt with in the past and trusted, to help me with some choices. I went to the store with the intent on purchasing a Taylor. After listening to several Taylors ranging between the 214ce to the 814ce, the sales person then showed me this Martin model. The sales person and the four other individuals that were present, all chose the Martin for its sound over the Taylors. I know there are more expensive guitars out there, including Martin, but I am very happy with the sound of this guitar for the money. As a newbie, I only play at home so I can't speak to playing in larger spaces. Other guitars may provide a little more control with their on board electronics, but if you are running it through an acoustic amp, not sure that if it's really an issue as the amp provides a lot of flexibility.

I do not know how long it will last, but when I play my guitar, the smell coming from inside is so lovely. The smell of Rosewood! Matched with the sound. It is like be carried away to a dream land! Into Flatpicking and Country- been looking for a year now . Decided that the rosewood is well worth the extra $$ compared to the Martin lower priced cutaways. I only had for a week -I have a Martin D1 also in comparison this is so much better in play ability right out of the box. ( at 2 times the price I expected it to be - ) what I find really nice is that Barr chords work better where I had some problems getting a full press with the index finger on my D1. - much less effort here with GPCA4.- I still have to get use to the tone - compared to the D1-much brighter . comes with light strings will try switching to Mediums .
Important-see my shipping note. Other Reviews helped me decide to go with the GPCA4.(custom made for Guitar Center.)

for my daughter who lives in another town, I cannot answer all your questions. Still, she was thrilled with it and--it is a REAL wood, solid wood Martin--so--'nuff said, I think

Bought this for a small music group with a lot of guitar players. Everyone has been amazed at the tone of this thing. I think the rosewood is worth the extra bit for sure. Deep, rich base tone and great full sound. This thing rings. action is a about perfect unless you're playing real high on the frets. Easy to play, neck about the same or as same as low profile.
Run through an amp this thing really shines. Just sitting around the house I put it through a little 40 watt fender acoustasonic and it sounds beautiful. came with the faux alligator hard shell case. Would be proud to take this guitar anywhere. hats off to Martin.
cons: none, don't see how anyone would be unhappy with this.

I spent a couple hours at a couple different GCs. I wasn't sure what I really wanted. Love the look, feel and HD sound of the Taylors but every model I played had the same issue. Aggressive playing and the sound just cancelles itself out. After several otger models i picked up a GPCPA4 standard. The Martins keep their sound the harder ya play them. But it was prettt thin on the bottom so I picked up a GPCPA4 Custom. The rosewood sides and bottom shames the standard model. They got me a brand new one out of stock and down the road I went. Bucketlist item ... always wanted a Martin and now I have one. Dont waste your money on a standard. Get the custom. The rosewood is worth the extra dough.

I own several acoustic guitars. What I'm so impressed about this Martin is the sustaining tones. I've owned several acoustic guitars and find that this guitar is of high quality in tone, staying in tune and most importantly the action.
