This was my first premium guitar purchase, having played for years i was finally ready to get a premium, solid wood guitar. What I like about this guitar is of course the Martin sound - great for my type of acoustic rock and folk music. I wanted a made in the USA but also solid wood guitar. I also needed electronics as I play in a church band. This model has it all but costs over $1,000 less than the D-28.

Inaccurate product description

The product description is confusing because it includes a reference to the aura system, but the guitar features only the analog system!! I purchased with expecting the aura system!

Angels Harp!

By Carl Gifford

from Bakersfield, CA

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom DCPA4 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I finally got ahead enough to buy one of these; my only regret now is that I didn't get one sooner! Sounds GREAT Acoustically! And I love the on board tuner that mutes for discrete tuning while plugged in. I tried playing through direct box to P.A. as I usually do, but it didn't seem like it sounded full enough...so I plugged it straight into P.A. amp and it came alive electrically. I have other acoustic electrics with slider "EQ" electronics, but I really like the simplicity of these analog control pots with push button tone shift. The craftsmanship and quality of this guitar is top rate first class. And the playability is fantastic excellent!

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom DCPA4 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

My parents gave me a $1000 to get a nicer guitar and I played countless guitars over and over, obsessing about which one was the best for the budget. The DCPA4R has this full yet balanced tone and in just 2 months since I bought it, it had already improved further in tonal quality. I plugged it in only once at a store and she sounded quite amazing. The neck is crazy smooth even for my smaller hands, easy bar chords all the way up to the 12th. So I ended up paying some extra on top of the original budget but with a 20% discount deal before Xmas I feel like I got the best guitar for the money available. Another plus: The rosewood smells absolutely fantastic.

Powerful guitar to empower real guitarists

    By Will V.

    from Hollywood, CA

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom DCPA4 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

As a collector of high end guitars, my limited and custom electric guitars outweighed my acoustics. Originally searching for exotics, I was shocked to find this luxury guitar at such a low price. I got so many compliments after performing, which I probably wouldn't have gotten on my interim guitar. The dreadnought body really drives good power and bass outward/audience-ward, and can handle hard strumming when I push it. Authentic/vintage in sound, well rounded tone, balanced trebles and lows. Pickups usually can't handle bass well, but the new pickup handles absolutely fine, with no feedback, and sounds natural. The action is very conducive to acrobatics and agile passages, and in combination with the rich tone, make it a very nimble and capable guitar. Fingerpicking, flatpicking, aggressive, mellow, harmonics, tapping - guitar handles it all. Other guitars at this price point were the equivalent of flat coke, and pricier guitars struggled to keep up in tone. Deep overtone textures, rich sounds, the music I play just oozes luxury. The ebony fretboard and included hardshell wood case is a plus. My students can't put it down, and hate picking theirs back up. On stage, players before and after feel dwarfed. And producers/engineers compliment what a joy it is to record a real guitar in the studio. Even preferred over the studio guitars in the recording studios I work with (usually older series Martins). Martin really outdid themselves (literally) with their new Performing Artist series. Most people fall in love with music and guitar without realizing the expensive hobby they're falling into, and few have the means to proceed to purchase ridiculously priced guitars that sound good. Smart move by Martin, even though Martin could be charging twice as much for these. Very deserving of respect.

    Best Acoustic Guitar EVER

    By Kelly Baker

    from Denton, TX

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom DCPA4 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I got this as a gift on Saturday. It came to me set-up and expertly tuned. Right out of the case, I couldn't believe my ears. This guitar is the holy grail of acoustics. I know there are more lavish Martins out ther, but trust me, this guitar is definitely not a "no-frills" guitar. The voice of this incredible instrument really shines. I have a Seagul S6 acoustic that has been my side arm for many years, and as much as I trust it, it can come close to the tone, and atmosphere this guitar provides. I plugged in tonight and lost myself for hours... the Fishman electronics took my playing to a whole new level. Love the built in tuner. Love the absence of feedback turned up and near my half stack tube amp. I love everything about this guitar. It's the perfect counter to my Les Paul Studio Deluxe. I will have this until the day I die.

    Beautiful Guitar

    By Steven Dunfee

    from Mountain City, Tennessee

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom DCPA4 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased the Martin DCPA4 Rosewood Dreadnought a couple weeks ago after trying out about a dozen different guitars including other Martin models, Taylors, Breedloves & Gibsons. I was sold on this model for the tonal quality it offered at its price point. Now that I've had it for a couple of weeks I am finding that every day I play it I like it even better. In fact, I have a hard time putting it down. Sounds great unplugged and plugged in the Fishman F1 system really delivers. My band mates instantly noticed a significant improvement in our sound the first time we practiced with me playing my new axe. I am over the moon with this guitar and would highly recommend it to anyone.

This is the best guitar I've ever owned, and trust me I have played a lot of martin and taylor high end guitars this is though not the best it is still on the top level, the sound is rich and warm, treble is a little flat but it is how Martin guitar should sound. Forget about the taylor 314ce and this is the one every folk player should have.

This Guitar delievers on mutilple levels. Not only is this a beatiful instrument, it's sound is full around. this Is my 1st Martin, I have to say this guitar will not dissapoint. you might read that the electronics pre amp aren't hot enough, but I beg to differ. In all aspects of what a guitar should be the DCPA4 is in all Rights everybit of what Ive read about the Maritn legacy.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom DCPA4 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have bought too many acoustic guitars searching for the perfect electro-acoustic guitar. You buy the cheaper guitars in the interest of saving money but end up with a less than satisfying guitar. I've have several $3,000+ guitars and they are good, nay very good. But they're expensive. If someone knows that they are going to play guitar for a long time, they should bite the bullet and get the best guitar they can afford. This guitar has excellent sound plugged or unplugged period. It sounds very arguably as good as my Martin HD28 and arguably better than my Taylor 814ce (Taylor's still have the easiest neck). If you can afford this guitar, and even if you can't, get it. I truly cannot see how you can do better for the price.

I changed the strings to daddario ej16 and it sounded horrible with very shrill e and b. The action wss too high for me. While it sounded good off the wall, i decided to invest a little more and took it in for bone nut, saddle and pins and to have the strings balanced better and am installing martin sp bronze strings. I hope this is finally the guitar for me. Playing for 30 years and can never seem to find a guitar that has IT!

The highs are present without being brittle and the bass is strong without being overpowering.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series Custom DCPA4 Dreadnought Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Bought this as an "Open Box - Blem" item. I'm always looking for the bargain. Saved a few hundred bucks, and had to look really hard to find anything I'd consider a blemish. Kind of a rubbed area on the pick guard, if you hold it to the light at just the right angle. Pretty sure I'm the only person that will ever know it's there.

The instrument itself is very nice. Figured I'd need to spend on a set-up, but it was very playable out of the box, all up and down the neck. Sound is great, of course. I usually play through a system, and the electronics were quite a bit different than my A3M, but once I got used to them, the sound is great. Controls are simple and still allow a good deal of flexibility. I especially like the little tweak you get with the phase adjustment by clicking the tone button. Gives you an easy subtle variation when moving through a bunch of songs.

First gig with it is tomorrow, so I get to use the alligator skin case. (Pretty sure no animals were harmed in the construction of the case)

Overall, a good deal on a good instrument.

I have heard about Martin guitars since childhood and am absolutely giddy to be able to buy and learn on one. This particular model is of amazing quality for the price, and the talented GC rep played it for us and remarked how comparable the sound is to his personal D-28. It has been an absolute joy to learn on this guitar, as the quality of sound, feel breeds confidence and enthusiasm. Looking forward to a lifetime of joy with my new musical companion. I use the Fishman tuner when I first take out the guitar for each practice, and it generally needs a very, very slight tune before each lesson but nothing too out-of-whack.

I played in the store, no one would help me, so I shrugged my shoulders and bought on the internet. The guitar arrived perfect. No setup required. Prefect. I should sell my others but I don't think I'm that strong.
