Should have been 5 stars

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series 2015 GPCPA5 Grand Performance Acoustic Guitar:

Let's start with the pros: The GPCPA5 is a beautiful instrument to look at. I can live with a high pressure laminate that sounds as good as it looks, and the unfinished spruce top is very nice. The tone is rich and well balanced: not as bright as a Taylor and not as boomy on the low end as a Martin dreadnaught. The sustain is amazing and the Fishman electronics are versatile enough to dial-in whatever tone you prefer. The tuner is right on. The neck is a nice shape, smooth and comfortable. The body shape is very comfortable too. But here is where the cons come in. The set-up from the factory is terrible. I"m too old and feeble to play bar chords down a neck with a 1/4" string height. Con #2: No truss rod wrench included. You can get one from Martin for $4.00 but they want $10.00 to ship it. It's a 5mm ball-end hex wrench and it's got to be 4-1/2" long to reach the recessed truss rod. I'd be willing to pay $4.00 more for the guitar if they just included the wrench and saved me the shipping charge. Con #3: No removable shims under the saddle. After adjusting the neck to maintain a nominal relief the string height is still too high. I like the string height at 4/64" at the 12th fret and you can't get it without shaving the saddle. Con #4: nut slots too narrow, strings binding and popping when adjusted. Why put graphite in the slots or have to have them recut on a new instrument. I haven't broken a string in 15 years but I broke one within a week on this guitar. Con #5: Martin case back-ordered. I'd like to keep the guitar humidified in a case but may have to wait a 6 weeks for the one that fits this series. OK, now that I've vented, let me say that once this guitar is set-up properly it's a keeper. I can't walk by it without picking it up and playing it.

Amazing

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series 2015 GPCPA5 Grand Performance Acoustic Guitar:

I have been paying guitar close to a year now and started on a yamaha that I brought at a BB. store that was getting rid of all there instruments at rock bottom price so I picked it up and practiced with it for about 3months learning chords and a few beginner songs then my son also wanted to learn and while practicing put a hole in my guitar : ( but that was the best thing that could have happened because the next day I went to Guitar Center and tried a couple of guitars and finally picked up this Martin and that's all she wrote! this guitar sounded so good and felt like butter in my hands very easy on the fingers and very smooth I took this baby home, after that it was like going into overdrive learning more difficult songs came easy and now I can even play the song I always played on my air guitar he he you guys know the creme de la creme of all aspiring guitarist song stairway to heaven WOW! Amazing so if you are looking for value and excellent sound from a good company that has been around for a long time this is the Martin of choice go to your nearest GC. and pick one up!

I love this guitar

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series 2015 GPCPA5 Grand Performance Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this as my first acoustic guitar. I tried out a few different guitars at guitar center in person and this one just had that feel that I wanted. The sound is great, plugged and unplugged, and it still that slightly darker martin twang to it. It comes with a built in tuner that works great. the fret board is very comfortable and the cutaway makes it great works pretty well for playing up past the 12th fret.

Awesome Guitar

By Bobby Thorne

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series 2015 GPCPA5 Grand Performance Acoustic Guitar:

This was my first acoustic guitar. I had been playing electrics for 4 years before I got this one and have had this about a year now. The guitar is awesome! The guitar itself is beautiful (I mean, it's a Martin). The fretboard is smooth, simple to play, and the fret markers are pretty cool looking (a single, small dot marks the 3rd, 5th, etc.). Its sounds great; even though it doesn't have a varnish finish on it, it sounds comparable to one that does (but granted still not as nice as those might). The action on it is fairly low, which is nice for someone coming from an electric. Having said that, it's still at a decent enough height for playing some basic slide with. Being that it's a Martin it also has a slightly darker sound than the Taylors I played, which may mean you want to try it out before you buy it. Overall this is a great acoustic

Pros

  • Good Feel
  • Stays In Tune

Cons

  • Flat Sound

Best Uses

  • Jamming
  • Practicing

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Series 2015 GPCPA5 Grand Performance Acoustic Guitar:

I purchase this guitar because I was looking for a composite guitar to take to jams and open mics, due to exposure to the elements. The construction is good and it feels good to play, but the sound is just okay. It doesn't project acoustically, and when plugged in, it has no warmth. I think Martin needs to use a more advanced electronic system to adjust the EQ.
