The search began for the perfect guitar: spruce top, rosewood sides/back, amazing pickup and bang for the buck. I have been playing guitars and around them used through sound systems in LIVE venues and church settings since 1980. Martin, though making an amazing acoustic guitar, struggled with the dreadnought having a standing wave of the open D string when left unmuted during live situations, would cause HUGE feedback problems for the soundman and caused me to be hesitant to purchase a dreadnought style. So my search began to lean towards Taylor. I have played nearly every model of Martin, Takamine, Taylor and various other brands searching for that "perfect" guitar. I stayed away from the Martin dreadnought for the D string issue so Taylor began to get my full attention... until I plugged it into a QSC K12 directly without any extra sound tweeks. The ES electronics sounded like a glorified electric guitar with a hint of acoustic, no matter how I tweeked the bass and treble on the Taylor. That killed it. I thought well, I am not finding anything that "floats my boat." So, I drove up to the Dallas, Tx area to hear a dear friend play LIVE at a high end restaurant with two other guys. It was amazing acoustic/electric music covers of the Eagles, Jim Croche, James Taylor and everything in between. Last 30 minutes in comes a man with a brand new jumbo Martin and comes up to sing and play. Well, from that moment on, every seasoned player on the stage (all with over 30 yrs. experience) had to play it and wouldn't put it down. More players drifted up and everyone was so inspired to play and sing with THAT guitar. It was just a matter of getting back to Houston and finding one at Guitar Center. I did. The sound through the system (Mackie powered mixer running through EAW cube cabinets) was absolutely amazing and no standing waves or feedback of any kind. So, for this gal, there is absolutely no more searching needed. All the fellows playing, (studio quality musicians who either worked on guitars, built guitars or owned many guitars, most over 5K each) said this Martin JCPA4 sounded better than most high end guitars they presently owned or had owned or played or heard or all. I can't say anything more than that. It bore this long of a write up because, being an analytical audiofile, it just had to be said in detail!!! I rest my case and am really excited to play again with such a fine instrument!! Thank you, Martin!!!

Poor sound for type of wood used. Can't tune open as chords will be sharp by almost a 1/4 note due to strings being too high off the neck. Poor location of 1/4" plug-in as it interfers with strap.
Fisher electronics used in guitar does not compare
to Taylor electronics I have in my Taylor 314CE.
Martin sounded like an electrified guitar versus Taylor sounding like an amplified accoustic.
The Martin fingerboard is too flat and difficult to note. The guitar is not easily played out of the box!

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Custom JCPA4 Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was shopping for a quality, mid range guitar that I could feel comfortable with carrying around to rehearsals & gigs. I played everything that I could get my hands on and finally settled on the a Martin GPCPA4R. I really, really liked it. good action, that great Martin sound, fair price and so comfortable for home and practice. Once I got it on stage, It sounded good, but I needed just a bit more punch. So I traded it for the JCPA4R and Absolutely Love It!! Same price, same great action and feel with just a little more sound across the board. A very comfortable guitar for a Jumbo and again, that great Martin Sound. (I play mostly Country and Classic Acoustic Rock/Folk) A perfect fit for my playing style and experience level. So Happy!!

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Custom JCPA4 Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased this guitar about 3 months ago and I just love it! It's what a Martin should sound like...nice bass yet very balanced and with a full sound. Projects very well especially with a pick, fingerstyle playing sounds great too. Plugged in has great sound. It's heavier than my Taylor 324ce but plays very well with the thinner PA neck, in fact I compared it with the D28 and D41 and it held it's ground and was more comfortable to play. I also love the way rosewood smells.. Yes I strongly recommend this guitar which should be worth much more, two thumbs up for GC on this custom guitar.

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Custom JCPA4 Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've had my JPCPA4 for a few weeks now. My main acoustic is a koa Taylor GSK but I'm not comfortable gigging it. I bought this as mid level guitar that I'm not afraid to carry around but has decent enough sound to play live gigs. Everyone has pointed out what an amazing guitar it is for the money. In fact, it's an amazing guitar period. Hands down the best purchase I've made.

        Great guitar, great price

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Custom JCPA4 Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have owned this guitar two months and use it to lead worship at church. I fell in love with this guitar while looking for something with a pickup to replace my X-series Martin (another great guitar). The balance of tone impressed me as it was very even across the strings. I wanted something that would give me the same core Martin tone of my X-series, but with the quality of sound that can only come from an all wood instrument and this guitar does that. The build and aesthetics are impeccable and the hardware is very high quality. I never have to tune it unless I travel with it and then the tuning need is ever so slight. The JCPA4 with its Fishman pickup pairs nicely with my Fishman acoustic amp and produces a beautiful clean acoustic sound that I just can't get enough of.

        Really Good

        By Jason

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Custom JCPA4 Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been shopping for an acoustic for several weeks. My budget was $3,000. I played everything that my closest three Guitar Center's had in their acoustic rooms. This guitar was clearly the best for the buck. At the last Guitar Center I went to I compared it to the Taylor 414ce, 416ce, and 816ce. I compared it to the Gibson Songwriter and Hummingbird Pro. I compared it to the Martin GPCPA1 Plus. I think the Taylor electronics sounded better, but acoustically none of the Taylor's compared to anything in the martin performing artist series. This guitar also sounded way better than both Gibson Songwriter and Hummingbird Pro both amp'd and acoustically. My ear couldn't detect a major difference between this guitar and the $3,000 Martin GPCPA1 Plus acoustically. Maybe there was just a little difference, but nothing dramatic. I certainly couldn't say the GPCPA1 sounded "better". The GPCPA1 did have a lot more of a pretty fit and finish. It also had way fancier electronics, but because the acoustics were so similar I saved myself the the extra $1,500 and went with this guitar .and I'm happy and don't worry Guitar Center, I'm sure I'll find something else in your store to blow the $1,500 I saved on!

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Custom JCPA4 Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review on anything. At 70 years old, I've owned and played a lot of different guitars. Every guitar model and every individual guitar has it's own characteristics both good and not so good. This guitar, as soon as I picked it up at GC and began playing it, it just felt like it was built for me. The feel, the sound, an all around great guitar. I usually play without an amp and am really impressed with the balanced, even amplitude across all the strings. I can get a really nice growl at the low end and an overall sweet rosewood sound all over the neck. While I don't play at the top of the neck that much, I appreciate the cutaway now. The electronics sound great as well. I don't see how you can go wrong with this guitar, especially for the price.

        Better than I expected

        By Daniel

Comments about Martin Performing Artist Custom JCPA4 Jumbo Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this a couple of week ago at Guitar Center in Omaha. I had gone there to get a d series but when I played this one, it clearly was a better guitar. My other guitar is a Martin D28 I bought new 40 years ago. Believe it or not, this guitar sounds almost as good and it's not even broken in yet! It has that solid pronounced bass that you expect from a rosewood Martin and it's a bit easier to play than the D28. I don't like the plastic covered strings it comes with (I've always thought they dull the sound a little). I usually use Martin FX Custom Lights and I expect this guitar will sound even finer with a new set of these! The electronics sound fine. I don't like the built in tuner because I prefer a tuner with a needle display. The case is nice but it is not a flight case as is the one that came with my D28. I would have preferred a locking latch but the center latch is made to accept a small padlock. All in all, I would say you're getting a D28 sound at about a grand less than a D28 and it has excellent electronics to boot. Get it if you can.
