This is a great guitar for anyone who travels via public transportation; no more bulky guitar cases. The tone resembles something akin to a Renaissance lute- like quality but sounds unique unto itself. Though it may seem awkward to play at first, especially if you're used to a full bodied instrument, this guitar is a great practice ax that you can bring anywhere and it weighs less than a textbook.

Alright, my friend owns this guitar, and hes not as good as me. I ONLY reccomend buying this guitar IF you can really play. You cant play thing thing sitting down, nearly at all. He got this from our local music store. I played it, and don't get me wrong, it sounds amazing, but its just so hard to play! So do not buy this if you are a beginner because you'll regret it.

Comments about Martin Nylon String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:

This is the perfect guitar to take camping when we go to music festivals. It's a typical nylon string guitar as it takes the strings a while to become consistent when new. It's really fun to play and has a great sound for it's size and price.

    Nylon String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar

    By Les

    from Buffalo NY

    Pros

    • Chick magnet
    • Cute
    • Lightweight
    • Small

    Cons

    • Doesn't hold tune
    • Thin Tone

    Best Uses

    • Low-volume practice

Comments about Martin Nylon String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:

More of a gadget than a guitar. Low-tension strings + small body = thin sound. Even old strings require constant re-tuning. Headstock is too small, and both E strings would do well to be reverse-strung on the pegs to eliminate a severe angle out of the nut. Requires a strap whether playing up or down. Frets aren't finished well and need some filing to take off the edges. The instrument is unfinished, or only lightly finished, and the fretboard tends to stain from finger oils.

Some limited use if you're a serious classical player backpacking through the Himalayas and you need to keep your fingers in shape. Otherwise, you could do as well with an old beater from a pawn shop, and not weep bitter tears if you have to use your guitar to start a fire or paddle your canoe out of banjo country.

That being said, the cute factor is great. It's nice for late-night noodling without waking the rest of the house.

    Backpacking Guitar Only

    By Armon Hammer

    Verified Buyer

    Pros

    • Easy to play
    • Excellent String Saddle
    • Low Tension Strings
    • No Bridge Pins
    • No Laminated Woods
    • Stealthy

    Cons

    • Bridge Too High
    • Overwhelming Odor
    • Very Soft Wood On Neck

    Best Uses

    • Hiking
    • Practicing

Comments about Martin Nylon String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:

Excellent Classical-style for quiet playing for sneaking into the woods and/or hiking. Only 3-lbs!

It sounds more like a thinner classical guitar compared to a ukulele (sound is really good). If you have the fingers then you make it sound good!

Strings are low tension, and Martin does not recommend high-tension strings. It takes about two weeks for the nylon strings to settle!
Just give it time & it will stay in tune as you play a song (needs re-tuned daily).

I wanted the classical model because it has an integrated string saddle & no bridge pins!

    No string-buzz!

I ended up shellacking the neck & headstock (over ten-coats) because the wood is very soft.
Mine got nicked when I bumped it against a table. The shellac helped strengthen the surface.

The action was very high so I ground the bridge on a bench grinder.

The guitar would not benefit having a truss-rod because the neck wood is way too soft.
It smells exactly like a wooden cigar box (same material).

Stock tuners are wiggly, thus, I replaced them with my Gotoh 501's. Be careful drilling into headstock as it is soft!

Thanks to Musician's Friend for the great deals & fast, free shipping!

A Martin without a truss rod?

    By JVMusic

    from Houston

Comments about Martin Nylon String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:

Action was very high, (good for slide guitar perhaps). Difficult and painful to play for even uitar rugged hands and (hard to beleive but true)No Truss Rod To Adjust. You'd have to adjust the action the trained Luthier way. Remove nut and bridge and sand down till right, or buy professional nut files and carefully ... You get the point. It's shape is ackward to play, slides around your lap. (Note: I am a normal fit person with a normal fit lap). I love Martin and this is NOT up to par with Martin quality. The good people at Musicians Friend were kind enough to let me return it.

    Be cautious!

    By Phil

    from clifton park, ny

Comments about Martin Nylon String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:

I read the other reviews and thought this could be a good guitar for me, as I travel for work quite a bit. I really haven't been too pleased. The sound isn't great and its very awkward to hold. Most importantly it get's out of tune very easily and often. When I go away for trips and want to play guitar I just bring my full size one. Save your money!

    Martin Classical Backpacker

    By GWC

from El Paso, TX; Grand Junction, CO

Comments about Martin Nylon String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:

Great little guitar for its purpose. Action was too high for my taste, so I cut down the bridge saddle 1/16" as suggested in the instructions and it was perfect. Extremely sturdy, even has fret markers on side of the fingerboard (unusual in a classical.) The strap must be used to play it, but that's part of the deal for portability and ease of instant use without assembly. The neck is a perfect width and radius for me. It doesn't sound like my full size Taylor classicals, but its own tone is pleasant. All in all, a great little instrument.

    Guitar in Afghanistan

    By Bobby Yarush

    from Bagram, Afghanistan

Comments about Martin Nylon String Backpacker Acoustic Guitar:

Just recieved my Martin... and this a really nice practice guitar. I am in Afghanistan and I couldnt have asked for a cooler intrument for the conditions I am in. Compact size, classical sound... a great tote around instrument. There is a slight issue with staying in tune... but its a minor thing.
