Overview

Limited to 100 units, this custom OM-28 VTS Orchestra Model couples vintage sound with modern playability and craftsmanship. This guitar was designed to target the highly-collectible vintage sound and tone of Martin’s Golden Era, the 1930s.

Orchestra Model
Martin invented the Orchestra model in 1929 for a world-famous banjo player named Perry Bechtel. During the 1920s, the banjo was the most popular stringed instrument. As the Roaring 20s died with the Great Depression, Perry Bechtel realized people didn’t feel so "roaring," and that the sound of the banjo was dying. If he was to survive as a musician, he needed to go in the direction of the new sound, and that was the guitar.

So, in early 1929, Perry took his banjo to Martin, and said, "Can you build me a small-bodied guitar with a long neck." Martin experimented, and eventually created the Orchestra Model. To create this new guitar, Martin used their auditorium body, brought the shoulders of the guitar in, and joined the neck to the body at the 14th fret. (Prior to this OM, acoustic guitars were joined to the body at the 12th fret). When Perry heard that Martin had created him a new guitar, he could hardly wait to play his instrument. And as many of you know, the Martin OM re-defined the acoustic guitar, by being the first acoustic guitar to have 14-frets clear of the body. This 14-fret design became so popularity with players that Martin integrated into their dreadnought models in 1934.

Vintage Tone System
With Martin’s revolutionary Vintage Tone System, they are able to target the sound of Martin guitars within a ten-year period. Martin’s VTS is a proprietary temperature aging process that allows Martin to target the sound of their vintage acoustic guitars within a decade. Martin has honed this process by benchmarking some of the finest examples of their 182-year history, found in their Nazareth, PA museum. Once they have aged the top to the correct moisture content and look of the period, it is ready to be placed on only the finest custom and authentic models. With this custom OM-28 VTS, they select a premium-grade of Sitka spruce for the top, and temperature age it to target the sound of the 1930s. They then combine this VTS top with the precision and playability of a modern custom OM-28, to create an auditorium guitar that has an extraordinary sound, with the playability of modern precision and technology.

The custom OM-28 VTS has a clear, defined treble and midrange tone, with a very balanced, punchy bottom end. It's very expressive, with a lot of volume and tone.

USA-made in Nazareth, PA. Comes with a 3-ply hardshell case.

Comments about Martin Custom OM-28 with VTS Acoustic Guitar:

1st tune was Time in a bottle as Jim Croce years ago sparked my ear , 2nd was Malted Milk a little R. J with a little E.C., lastly was a dropped D G tune of Ave Maria (Chet Atkins Trans.). All I can say is it is a far better guiter than I am a player, which is good, more reason to play.

Comments about Martin Custom OM-28 with VTS Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar is beautiful. After playing every guitar in the area in the under-$4000 price range, I settled on this one. What a great decision. The versatility of the instrument is amazing. This holds true across various tunings. I could not be happier with the finish, the craftsmanship, and the overall quality of the instrument. I also own a HD-28, this guitar is very different, but is an excellent compliment. I can't believe I didn't buy one of these sooner. Martin did an amazing job with this instrument.

Comments about Martin Custom OM-28 with VTS Acoustic Guitar:

I traded a Taylor DN3 and a Lowden small body guitar to get this guitar with no regrets. This for me is a Desert Island Guitar. It does everything I need a guitar to do. It sounds beautiful and full strummed and flat picked, but it is also a superb finger style guitar. I play a lot of country blues and ragtime and this guitar is great for this style of playing, but I also love playing old time music - strumming and playing g runs with the flat pick, and again this guitar sounds great. I love the herringbone trim, the grover tuners, the diamond volute
neck...a gorgeous guitar this looks almost as good as it sounds! I should have bought an OM-28 years ago.

Comments about Martin Custom OM-28 with VTS Acoustic Guitar:

Stumbled across one of these at Edina,MN Guitar Center in October of 2015 two days after it arrived - bought it the next day. Picked up many OM sized guitars over the past few years and none made the impression that this OM-28 VTS did. Sound is always subjective, yet I played another one like it in the store in February (i think it was sold to the other person offering comment) and liked it too. These are a hidden jewel for the money. IR and sikta seems boring but can be great.

Comments about Martin Custom OM-28 with VTS Acoustic Guitar:

I walked into the Guitar Center in Edina, Minnesota to buy a set of strings.....and came out with this guitar. And when I say "this guitar", I mean the one in this ad. Once I picked this guitar up, I could not put it down. I've owned a D28, D18, & a D45 over the last 10-12 years. Great guitars. But this guitar is hands-down the best I've ever played. The 1.75" neck combined with the modern profile makes it incredibly comfortable to play. This may well be my lifetime acoustic guitar. Finally. And here is the kicker: the guitar in this ad is, in fact, the guitar I bought. No kidding. #1918271 is the guitar that I walked out of the store with. Totally weird. But true: they used MY OM28 VTS in this ad. They are only making 100 of these...and I have The One. Check out my attached photo of MY 1918271 custom Shop OM@*. It's a small world.
