Overview

This exclusive Custom HD-28 VTS acoustic dreadnought couples classic sound with modern playability and craftsmanship. This guitar was designed to target the highly-collectible vintage sound and tone of Martin’s Golden Era, the 1930s. As many of you know, this time period produced the finest steel string acoustic guitars in the world. Martin guitars from the 1930s are considered by many to be a benchmark for the acoustic steel string guitar. Today, if you could find one, you would pay anywhere from $100K to $400K.

However, with Martin’s revolutionary Vintage Tone System, a proprietary temperature aging process, they are able to target the sound of their vintage acoustic guitars within a decade. Martin has honed this process by benchmarking some of the finest examples of their 182-year history, found in their Nazareth, PA museum. Once they have aged the top to the correct moisture content and look of the period, it is ready to be placed on only the finest custom and authentic models.

With the custom HD-28 VTS, they selected a premium-grade of Sitka spruce for the top, and temperature age it to target the sound of the 1930s. They then combined this VTS top with the precision and playability of a modern HD-28 to create a dreadnought guitar that has an extraordinary sound, with the playability of modern precision and technology. The HD-28 VTS has a clear, defined treble and midrange tone, with a very balanced, punchy bottom end. .

USA-made in Nazareth, PA.
Comes with 640 molded case.

Comments about Martin Custom HD-28 VTS Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

After 2 years of trying many types: D-18, D-28, HD-28, D-35, HD-28V, 2017 D-28 and always feeling like there either wasn't sufficient balance (too much or not enough low end); or that there seemed to be a sock muffling the sound; this Custom HD-28 with VTS premium spruce top jumped out.

Out of the box, the typically high action set at the factory (with 4200's - mediums) made the guitar sound out of balance with the lows obscuring the 1st and 2nd strings. Felt and sounded so stiff. But once the action was lowered, not only was the feel amazing, but the guitar both roared like a lion — so full sounding and loud — but also shimmered smoothly. Warm AND bright. Each string articulates very well yet when playing chords the guitar voices in one lush unified blend. The premium Spruce VTS top is not only aesthetically beautiful, but it far surpasses the 6 different new HD-28's I've played in terms of sound.

Comments about Martin Custom HD-28 VTS Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

What a guitar. The tone wraps around you like a warm blanket. I was looking for a full sounding rhythm guitar with great lows yet clear mids and crisp highs, and I found this creamy ear honey goodness. The low profile neck feels wonderful and I was pleased with the set up of the guitar - I didn't have to adjust the action or anything. I have mainly owned Taylor guitars, because of the style of music I typically play I leaned towards guitars with a neck on which I can easily move around, playing a lot of fingerstyle and thumbpicking type music. I was becoming discontent with the normal week-to-week strumming tone quality of my Taylor 314ce at church, so I decided to get the HD-28, put an Anthem SL pickup in it, and now couldn't be happier with it. The VTS model was on sale so after researching a bit I snagged it. If there's a difference in tone from the Standard HD-28 I haven't really noticed it yet, but I haven't played them side-by-side. The look of the VTS top is a darker wood which I like though.
