What a guitar!!

By guitargal

from New Haven, CT

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have probably had about 8 guitars over the past 40 years (acoustics and electrics)and this is by far the best one yet. I had sold my Taylor 110 and was looking for a guitar that had solid woods with great sound, and one that I intended to keep. The solid rosewood and spruce top of the DSR have that wonderful Martin sound, great bases and bright trebles. The action was a little bit high, so I had a Martin tech set it a bit lower and also install a strap button on the heel. It also came with medium gauge strings which he changed to lights. I just love this guitar, I can't put it down, I am always playing it! It has a mod low oval neck, which is very comfortable. I went to the Guitar Center with the intent that I would have to pay much more than the $899.99 that I paid for it at the GC Green Tag Sale. I played almost every Martin (not the electic models) in the store, guitars that were 2 to 3 times more expensive, and chose this one over the others because of its great sound. I also called Martin - they emailed me the specs on the guitar and said it was modeled off of the D28. This is a great guitar and you will not be sorry with your purchase.

What a value!!!

By Hagman

from Portland, Or

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

As an owner of a Taylor 614CE and other guitars, I was looking for an everyday knock around player. I tried the lower end Taylor, Epiphone Masterbuilt, Breedlove and others. And then I picked up the Martin DSR. The sound overwhelmed me. And then I tried other Martins's including D-28, but nothing sounded better than the DSR. Great neck, great feel and easy to play. What a sound, what a value.

Best Bang for the Buck! Hands Down!

By FinallygotmyMartin

from Vero Beach, FL

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've been playing on and off for pleasure and in bands for about 30 years. I've always wanted a Martin, but never really wanted to spend the money. I went out to look at the new Epiphones that everyone is raving about. I played a few of them, and they were okay, but not really great. While I was there, I decided to play a few Martins - all of them actually. When I strummed this one, I could not believe the sound! My wife actually spun around, and said how great this guitar sounded. The DSR was clear, crisp, full, and completely filled the room. The action was perfect, and it was the easiest guitar I have ever played. I played for a few minutes, and it was awsome. When I finally had the nerve to check the price, I was again amazed. My wife looked at me, and said "Buy it". Honestly, this sounded better than the D-15's, D-28's. etc. It really was the best playing, best sounding Martin in the store. My advice - forget those Epiphones, and spend a few more bucks on a REAL guitar! I've waited 30 years for this, and it was worth the wait. I've had the DSR for about a month now, and I just can not put it down.

MARTIN QUALITY WITH TAYLOR TONE!!!

By lemonadewade

from Cincinnati, OH

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

After purchasing and being disappointed with several guitars, including two martins I decided to go to Taylor to get the tone I wanted... After selecting a 2200 dollar Taylor I was waiting for them to box it up, I just happened to grab the DSR-GC I played it for a minute and fell in love and have been in love for over a year now... thanks Martin and guitar center.

Beautiful rich tone, great price!

By E-Tar

from Allston, MA

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've owned and played Martins and Taylors for years. I was looking for deeper tone than my Taylor 410 (a great guitar, but not the resonance of a martin) I played nearly all the Martins and Taylors in 3 stores and the DSR stood out, even compared to guitars two or three times the price. I played 3 DSR's to find a gem, but what a gem! Deep rich bass and clear trebles. No frills, but solid wood quality build attractive guitar, and AMAZING tone. You got to check it out.

By Mikee lites it

from North Branch, MN

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have had it over a year and I still know (not think)that it is the best sounding guitar I have ever played or heard. When I was in the store I played every acoustic thay had. With money in my pocket and willing to pay thousands, I found my new axe for just over a grand. Best money I have ever spent, NO DOUBT.

MY DREAM GUITAR...

By Jong Sarceno

from Sherman Oaks, CA

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I've been saving money for years to buy a great sounding acoustic guitar. I've been wanting the Taylor 310 or the Martin D-18. I tried both and made a verdict that Martin D-18 is my preferred one. Just when I finally got the money for the D-18, I decided to try back the D-18; but when I got to the store I tried the Martin DRS and it sound even beter than the D-18 and the price is lesser. I didn't think twice. I bought my Martin DRS that day! A super great sounding acoustic guitar with ALL solid wood with back and sides made of solid rosewood. I finally have a great sounding guitar and its made by Martin. Thank you GC for the great deal!

The best Martin I have owned

By rick

from Warwick, RI

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have owned several Martins over the years, D-28 and a Martin Eric Clapton edition to name a couple and I have to say this is my favorite. From the soft satin finish to the amazing tone this Martin cannot be beat! The fact that the price is so reasonable for an American made Martin is just an extra bonus. I went into Guitar Center with about 5 grand in my pocket to spend on a new Martin and I was not looking at prices, only the sound and this one stood above the rest! I would highly recommend this guitar to anyone, from pro to beginner. GO BUY THIS GUITAR! You will be so happy that you did!

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

At Guitar Center one day playing their acoustics and came across the Martin DSR-GC. Apparently Martin made these models only for GC and Musicians Friend. Priced around $1200. Very crisp clear lows, highs and great ringing sustain. Couldn't really believe my ears at first when comparing it to even a D-28 and a Gibson J-45 that were also hanging on the wall. I sat there for over an hour just switching back and forth with the other guitars. Finally convinced myself that this particular DSR sounded more beautiful than all the others or anything else I had owned previously for that matter. The off the wall I was playing had a ding in the spruce top so they took a brand new DSR out from storage. I thought I would buy that but just to make sure I compared it to the demo model I had been playing. Couldn't believe it. The demo sounded so much better in comparison to the brand new identical DSR so I said the hell with it I'll just take demo with the ding in it. They took $100 off the price for the ding and I left a very happy customer with one of the best sounding guitars I had ever played. I know Most folks already know this but I can't stress enough to play and compare as many identical models as possible to make sure you know what your getting (as opposed to just buying one from a mail order dealer and crossing your fingers hoping you will get a good one)

You Will Love This Guitar!

By James

from Lees Summit, MO

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I went into Guitar Center to just "look around". I strolled back into the acoustic room and was just checking out Taylor and Gibson prices. Then I looked over in the corner and saw the DSR realized it was a Martin and sat down with it. I played it first and then picked up several other Taylor, Gibson and other models. Then I came back to the Martin DSR which was the first one I played. My wife, who had her back to me wheeled around and said "That one, that's the one that sounds the best". I said "I know, that's what I thought but just couldn't believe the sound for the price". This guitar resonates and rings after playing a chord as if you were holding down the sustain pedal on a piano. It has a matte finish which I think is really cool and the rosewood back and sides fill the room with a beautiful wood smell. I have had my DSR for about a year and a half and I love this guitar. Comes with a hardshell Martin case. This is a deal!

Resonant-a-licious

By Tyson Ouellette

from Maine

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I was finally ready to purchase a high quality acoustic after having played a budget Oscar-Schmidt(Washburn) for years, and originally went in looking for a more lower mid-range acoustic-electric model, thinking I'd buy the DRS-1 or DRS-2, but was not at all impressed with their sound for the price. I then tried every guitar in the store $1200 and under, and I kept picking up this Custom D over and over and over between trying other models, mostly Taylor and Martins, and nothing compared. The weight is perfect, the mix of solid woods is absolutely beautiful, the neck and fretboard are like butter, I mean nearly effortless. The spruce, rosewood, and mahogany combo smells wonderful as you're playing and air is moved through the body. The best feature of this guitar? The resonance. The entire guitar hums and some frequencies resonate through your entire torso, it's exhilarating. Sustain is incredible and the volume you can get out of it is almost surprising, if you play hard this is a very loud dread. How an instrument feels and sounds to you as the player is more important than brand recognition, or fancy inlays, or what people say you should get. That being said,if you're looking to make the upgrade to a solid wood instrument but aren't in a position to drop $1500+, my opinion is that one of these GC Custom Ds is the way to go. It's beautiful while also being modest, and acoustically out-performs anything else in its price range that I've tried. If you're prepared to spend close to $1000, consider going the little extra and try one of these out. I sincerely doubt you will be disappointed. I am 100% satisfied with this guitar and will have it for a very long time.

Can't put this guitar down!

By Don Kerrigan

from Pottsville, PA

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I am 48 years old and have been playing on and off since I'm 14. I haven't played much over the last few years due to having very active children and work commitments. I was at my sisters house on the Fourth of July and my nephew brought out his guitar and I played terribly! My nephew told me I needed to start practicing to get to his level so we could jam. I couldn't believe that he had passed me up. ( I taught him a lot when he first started playing) I went to the a local music store to get new strings for my old Aria acoustic and I was looking at the Martins. I had always wanted one because a friend of mines dad had one when we were young and I remembered how great it sounded and how easy it was to play. I asked the sales rep if I could play one. BIG mistake - it sounded so good and played so much better than my Aria that I couldn't stop thinking about it. I was looking online on GC website and saw that they were running a special financing deal - 18 months same as cash. I drove to the nearest GC which was an hour from my house and played about 10 different guitars but I kept coming back to the DSR, I loved the sound. The only problem was it did not play nearly as well as the one I had played at the local music store. I told the sales rep if he could make it play as well as the one I had previously played I would buy it. He had the guitar tech do a set up on it and I was sold! I have played that guitar for everyday for the last 2 months and I love it! I got together with my nephew last week to play and I'm proud to say he told me "Wow uncle Don, you got your chops back! I'm back in love with playing music and its all because of my Martin DSR!

Even if your just beginning, get this guitar.

By Mark in Utah

from Utah

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Even though I am completely new to playing guitar (I forced myself to try it as a kid) I wanted to get a guitar that I really wanted to play. I was afraid to spend this much money on a "first" guitar but I have not regretted it for even a minute. I love playing this guitar. I bought it about a month ago. At first I played it until my fingertips revolted, then I got beyond that and play now till my hand cramps. I can't believe that I am playing something that sound so musical. So if even if your a beginner like me I highly recommend this guitar. You won't regret spending a little extra for it.

Beginner's view

By LY

from Carrollton, TX

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I am starting over after a seven year layoff and I am truly a beginner. Could not play one chord when I purchased this back in December '09. The GC staffer played everything from Gibson and Taylor in this price range and I kept coming back to the Martin because of the feel. While I can't play... I can hear and the DSR just blew me away. The DSR makes me want to practice.

WOW!! Really!

By Scot

from Los Amgeles

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Seriously, like other reviewers have said of this Guitar the Martin DSR, It sounds better than any martin ive played to date. I was hesitant to review a year ago. I didnt want to be the guy that said this was "THE BEST" Martin. As Martin is an Amazing company with many good models. But, it really does have enormous projection. It is one loud Martin. Its resonance seemes to come out of the whole guitar, not just the soundhole.Mine has a Satin finish, the glossy's arent as loud. And the neck shape makes for effortless playability. Tuning holds insane!

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I originally went to guitar center looking to buy a taylor or a breedlove guitar. I selected a breedlove and the sales associate wen tot he back room to get me a new one out of the box, in that process i heard someone playing this martin and i loved the sound of it. So i made a last minute change from the Breedlove to the Martin and i never regret the decision I have made. The guitar is really comfortable to play and has a perfect the action.

I love my Martin

By Sandy Johnson

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I picked this guitar up at GC back in 2008, and it is still by far my favorite. Over the last 5 years the sounds has gotten even better, and all my friends fall in love with it when they play it. Had to adjust the action when I first got it, because Martin loves to have their new guitars with 1" high action. Natural finish allows this guitar to resonate. I'll put this against any high end Taylor or Gibson.

Great find

By Rod Maestas

from Austin, Texas

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I really love this guitar. The thing I like the most is the feel of the neck and the tone. I came into Guitar Center just to "dream" one late evening. I went into the acoustic room and started playing some really expensive Martins that played ok but nothing that really grabbed my attention. I then noticed a guitar hanging in the Martin section that had a rosewood fingerboard. Most acoustics have ebony these days. I'm a big fan of rosewood fingerboards on electrics. I picked it up and one strum really got my attention. Great very pronounced and loud sound from an acoustic. It really felt good playing it as well. I looked at the price tag expecting something over $2000 and was shocked at the $1199 price. I then thought that the back and sides must be laminate for this price but then read that it had solid rosewood back and sides! I went to the counter and bought it! I could not believe I was going to bring home a Martin. I had a really good Martin Case from the cheapo martin I already owned so they knocked off $119 from the price. I also later traded in my DX1 to GS to help pay for the DSRGC. 3 months later and i still love this guitar. I am a songwriter and have a pro home recording studio. The DX1 just was not cutting it for playability and sound. I use a Groove Tubes GT67 tube mic about a foot away from the 12th fret and run it through an LA-610 pre rolling off -1.5 at 70HZ and boosting 10k by +3. The sound is simply amazing. The song I am working on now was going to have acoustic and electric rhythm tracks but I decided to just use two tracks played on the DSR. Love the sound.

      Great Guitar--Especially for the Price!

      By Ryan

      from Louisiana

Comments about Martin Custom DSR Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have owned this guitar for about 2 years now and I love it. The rosewood backing and sides really provide a nice, deep tone. I love the spruce top and the fact that it is not a gloss finish. I would highly recommend paying the extra few hundred dollars and getting this one instead of the DSM-GC. Obviously, don't expect it to sound quite as nice as the Martin HD-28, but especially for the price, this thing sounds phenomenal...plus its a Martin!
