Overview

This American-made, Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar is the real deal and a real steal. Made in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, this amazing instrument is crafted with a solid Sitka spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides. Like many of Martin’s famous dreadnought guitars, the Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought has all the punch and volume that players have come to expect from the world-famous Martin Guitar Co. The combination of Sitka spruce and mahogany back and sides generates a tone with expressive highs and mid-range frequencies; plus, a loud, punchy bottom end. Along with a great tone, this guitar has amazing sustain and dynamic response.

Made in Nazareth, PA, the Custom D is equipped with a simple dovetail neck joint. This glued, neck-to-body joint allows the neck and body of the guitar to resonate as one instrument. Like many of the world’s finest string instruments, the dovetail does not have any bolts that limit sustain and change the color of the acoustic sound. The tight fit increases the transference of tone and sustain across the entire instrument. Play as soft, or as hard as you want, and this instrument has got you covered. This versatile guitar can handle just about any musical style, from bluegrass to rock, and anything in between. And, best of all, the Custom D is an awesome complement to the human voice. Whether you are on tour, playing a coffeehouse gig, or just jamming with your friends, the Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought will be everything you had hoped for in an acoustic guitar.

Playability

With playability a must for students and working musicians, the Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought features a very comfortable modified low oval neck. Each Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought receives a computerized Plek setup for the most accurate action possible.

Pick up one of these beauties, and you will not be disappointed!

My son Jesse bought the Martin D-15 Custom for me. It is made of solid mahogany sides and back and a solid spruce top. To look at it it is handsomely plain but when you pick it up and play it there is nothing plain about it. The playability and tone are the best I have ever had the pleasure to experience in a guitar. It resonates pure distint tones from base to tenor that blend together with a beautiful fullness. I use to play an Alverez Yari classical guitar and now I only play my Martin. I paired it up with the Marquis Chestnut guitar strap. I find it hard to put it away in my Martin guitar case. I wish I could play it all day long. My Martin D-15 trio is by far the most wonderful gift I have ever had the honor of receiving. Thank you Jesse and the Martin Guitar Company.

Unbelievable Value

By Charlie C

from PA

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I played every Martin, Ovation, Laravee, Epiphone, and Taylor in the 650-1200 dollar price range. This was the clear winner. This being a limited edition it has the Sitka Spruce top that the normal D-15 does not have. Only enhances the sound. Absolutely sounds and plays fantastic. The workmanship on this guitar is flawless. It is so easy to play also. You will not find a better acoustic under 1000 dollars. A must try.

playing it for a year now

By john

from santa clara, ca

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Because this guitar tends to be so mellow, string selection is more critical than for any other guitar I've owned. The guitar is immanently playable, and makes other guitars seem somewhat heavy and awkward. I actually took my 1973 Guild D-25 into the luthier to try to get its action closer to the Martin's. I'm finding that the Martin changes not only how I play, but what music I'm interested in developing. I wish I'd picked it up five years ago.

Martin D custom

By John Bailey

from Hermitage, TN

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

After many years of wanting a Martin, I have found exactly the tone and playability I wanted in this guitar at a cost I could afford. I was a little disappointed with the first sound I got after receiving this guitar, but replacing the old strings with a new set re-affirmed that Martins have the warmth and projection I always admired. Thanks to Martin for keeping top quality and craftsmanship their priority in making all their products.

gets better every year

By john farnsworth

from SF Bay area

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this guitar for selfish reasons, thinking that my performing days were over so I'd get the mahogany sound I preferred rather the rosewood sound you need to fill a room. The crazy thing is that I'm now performing again, and I'm blaming it on the guitar. It's such a pleasure to play, it seems a shame to keep it to myself. I've had Custom D for several years now, and the tone is substantially more lively now than when I first bought it. It took about six months to find the right strings for it; all the Martin strings were way too mellow for this guitar. I finally settled on D'Addario EJ15-3D and they match this guitar wonderfully, with a warm and bright tone. Someone else mentioned that this guitar is much more sensitive to strings than others, and I agree with that 100%. After I found the strings I wanted to use I took the guitar to a luthier to get the action tuned to these strings and to my playing style, and it was well worth the money. At this point the guitar seems to play itself. I love the smell of this guitar, which I'm sure is a function of the matte finish. After three years the neck is now glossy even though I've always washed my hands before playing. There's a little gloss forming where my arm comes down on the top of the body, and in a few places on the back. I guess this was inevitable, but I've resisted the temptation to polish the guitar because I'm sure the light finish has helped this Martin breathe much more than a glossy guitar. It took a while to get used to a non-glossy finish, but at this point I prefer it. (And I always keep a rag handy. This is a guitar that begs to be wiped down after every session.) I play with a couple other fellows who play Martins, and it's amazing how the guitars complement each other. One plays an 000-45, the other a D-28, and I was worried that those guitars would overshadow mine in terms of timbre, especially with the extra light strings I use, but this has not been the case. Even un-miked in a room with 30 people, it holds its own in the midst of the rosewood guitars, oven once a banjo is mixed in. One of the biggest differences between this guitar and any other guitar I've ever owned is how well it stays in tune, even after a rowdy set, or after sitting neglected for a week. It's always ready to go. I ended up selling my other guitars except for a travel guitar. Why play a guitar that doesn't make you sound as good, or isn't as pleasant to play?

I'd Call This A Bargain, The Best I Ever Had

By GINO ARCHER

from Somers, New York

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I ordered this guitar on line about 2 weeks ago. I usually prefer playing a guitar before I purchase, but in this case, I trusted the Martin name and reputation would prevail. The guitar is PERFECT in every way. The sound is exceptional and pure. It resonates to fill the room with base tones and high notes. It plays like a Les Paul on steroids, and the fragrance of the wood is intoxicating. After playing the instrument for about 15 minutes, it conjured up memories of Neal Young playing "Tell Me Why" on a much higher end Martin over 40 years ago. What a thrill. For the price, I can't think of another acoustic I've ever played that comes close to this. Combine this guitar with the professional staff and support of the Guitar Center, and it makes for a perfect experience. I've been playing for about 40 years and own 12 guitars. This Martin is at the top of the inventory. One suggestion to note, you may want to change the strings that were shipped with the guitar. I prefer Martin coated Lifespans or Elixirs.

Wonderful sound

By kd

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

Never thought I could afford an solid wood Martin. Not until I found this model. Martin factory says it is equivalent to a D-15M except has a spruce top. Every time I get it out people comment on the tone. I replaced the plastic pins, saddle, nut and end pin with bone. A set of extra lite Martin Marquis strings and you have a sound that is as good as it gets. You could pay a lot more and end up with a lot less.

Great touring guitar for the money

By Ray Lawrence Jr.

from Machessney Park, IL

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I am an independent recording artist and touring musician. I have this model Martin and I bought mine used from Guitar Center. the first thing you are going to want to buy for this guitar is a hard shell case, a humidifier, a capo a tuner and couple sets of strings and a string winder and get some picks a strap and if you do not want to drill holes on your martin get the Martin leather piece with the strap button on it. All those things you will need because once you start playing you will not want to put it down. But when you do put it down you will want to put it in the case and put the humidifier in there if you live in a dry climate area. Consult your sales person for all the goodies they are the best and make sure you get these things. Also get a polishing cloth or 2 and if you are like me get some lem oil and don't be afraid to use it on the finger board and bridge. OK, now for the good stuff. I have a woody type pickup that I use but you can mic this guitar or have any number of pickups installed. If you are playing a bluegrass jam outside like do a lot, you will be in for a treat. This is one great sounding guitar and as it ages it will sound better. I play mine without a pickup and with a mic and sometimes that woody pickup. Either way it is a work horse. i recorded an album with this guitar and I have done lots of shows and videos with this guitar. I would have it set up before leaving the store unless you are able to do this your self but have it done. This guitar will sound as good as a high dollar Martin without the cost and it is made in the same factory too. Once you play one of these babies you will be in love with it. Worth every penny you pay for it. This model is my main guitar and I will have another one.

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have a deeper knowledge of electric guitars, but I love this baby. The action is fluid and precise, the mahogany/spruce combination produces a nice mixture of warmth and brightness. And it's loud, with a full-bodied sound. (Oh, and by the way, it comes with a nice Martin case). I haven't spent a lot of time around high-end Martins and such, so perhaps I'm not as sophisticated (or snooty!) as others. But for under a grand, Martin has offered players like me something I never thought I'd possess--a dreadnought guitar that plays and sounds like a Martin; one that will impress anyone who appreciates a quality instrument (I promise you). If this is your price range and you're on the cusp, take the plunge. Like another reviewer, I bought my direct from the factory--just trusted in the Martin name and the other reviews. They did not disappoint. Right out of the box it blew me away. Just knocked me out. I had just purchased a Fender American Standard Limited Edition Stratocaster with a solid rosewood neck a few days earlier. I was totally digging that guitar (and it's a beauty) when the Martin arrived. Now it's sitting in a corner collecting dust because I can't put this baby down. She's my gal and I'm in love.

      Amazing

      By R. Stephen Howard

      from Elizabethtown. KY

Comments about Martin Custom D Classic Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

I have been banging around with guitars for 40 years. Can't say that I'm a pro by any means. I received this guitar today. It is everything that it is described to be. Let me tell you my friends, I am astonished. This guitar is loud, crisp and clear. Its is beautiful. I couldn't see how any guitar could been made by a human any better than this guitar. As the "old saying" goes, you can strum the strings and sit it in the corner, and go back and hour later and it is still ringing. Sounds like I'm laying it on a little thick, but I'm not. The satin finish fits this instrument precise. It has a highly smooth feel and is perfectly shaped. I cannot say it any plainer, the sound is precisely perfect. If you want an extremely high quality guitar at a very reasonable and honest price, you will be pleased purchasing this fine instrument...
