Comments about Martin Custom 000MMV Solid Wood Rosewood/Sitka Acoustic Guitar:

visited local gc messing around w/acoustics and picked this up - wow, beautiful sound, construction etc... the MMV sounded and played nicer than much more expensive guitars. I left and thought about it & it really was a no brainer - went back the next day and played again and no I wasn't hallucinating, it just sounded beautiful. Don't know what it is about the MMV, but this is Martins best kept secret. Looking at it you see an entry level all wood Martin, but start playing and it really fills the room. I have a couple of friends who are accomplished musicians who cannot put this down. This guitar is a great for the all around player - perfect for me as I enjoy different types of music, handles them all well. Feel sorry for my other acoustics as they will not be seeing much playing time.

Incredible value... a true sleeper!

By

from Dallas Texas

Comments about Martin Custom 000MMV Solid Wood Rosewood/Sitka Acoustic Guitar:

I was on the hunt for a 000-28EC, and played a 000MMV at a GC near my house. I was in a position to afford the Clapton, but the hunt stopped when I played the 000MMV. At less than half the price of a Clapton, it had everything I wanted in a writer's/occasional player's guitar. I installed a Fishman Ellipse Blend, and for me... it is perfect! I may replace the nut and saddle someday, but I have zero complaints about this guitar. I have subsequently played three Claptons, and mine is still the clear winner!

best kept secret but play it first

Comments about Martin Custom 000MMV Solid Wood Rosewood/Sitka Acoustic Guitar:

I am a beginning guitarist with small hands. This guitar fit me like a glove. The guy in the Guitar Center handed it to me and said "this is the one you want" and it was. Fast neck, easy for me to chord. Great sound. I like that it has projection but not any BOOM. I only say play it first because I think some people will want a more dreadnought sound and feel. This is more refined-feeling than that.

Martin got it right!

Comments about Martin Custom 000MMV Solid Wood Rosewood/Sitka Acoustic Guitar:

I am not what you would consider a great guitar player. However, I have been playing for many years and know what sounds good. This model that is equivalent to a (000), plays and sounds incredible similar to a Colling's or a Goodall but about 1/3 the cost. I am sure that the folks in Austin, Texas would argue with me but I challenge anyone to try one of these guitars.

Comments about Martin Custom 000MMV Solid Wood Rosewood/Sitka Acoustic Guitar:

I went in my local GC to only buy strings one day, and brought this home! Excellent small body for the money (or ANY money)! I can't exactly afford the 000-28, but get one of these and you'll have no regrets. For some reason, Martin manufactured some of these with an ebony fretboard and bridge, and some are made with Richlite. I got lucky I guess and mine has the ebony. Not sure how much difference it would really make other than just the feel. Mine also came with a Plek setup, and the playability, fit and finish are superb. After having this for 2 weeks, I had my local luthier upgrade it with a bone nut and saddle and it is absolutely STELLAR now. I don't understand at all why this model is still flying "under the radar" as it is, but if you are considering a small body Martin, you owe it to yourself to seek this model out and try it.

Good, but not in a league with the Standard Series

By

from Steelers Nation

Comments about Martin Custom 000MMV Solid Wood Rosewood/Sitka Acoustic Guitar:

Setting aside the hyperbole of the other reviewers, this is a nice 16 Series level 000-sized guitar, but not without its limitations. It's basically a 000-16RGT but with straight (non-scalloped) bracing, and that's largely why it falls short of such hyperbolic accolades. In a nutshell, I found the tone to be tight (due to the long "OM" scale length) and thin (due to being over braced). I'll explain why, but I should note that I played this model a home for a month before returning it to get a 000-18E Retro. I had also considered the 000-28EC, but couldn't adapt to the Mod V neck. I love the 000-18E and its ?high performance? neck. I find the tone of mahogany to be "unvarnished" by chaotic competing overtones. Its ?present? fundamentals make tone what I like to call ?honest? and ?trustworthy.? Anyway, getting back to the 000-MMV. First, it?s more an ?OM? (orchestra model) than a ?000? (triple aught) in the sense that it has the longer 25.4? scale length. So while it project well, it lacks the complexity of a Standard Series 000, leaving it sounding a bit too tight for my taste. Second, it has straight (non-scalloped) bracing which I find to be an odd spec for an OM/000 body size. The smaller body already adds stiffness to the top to begin with, so straight bracing undermines the primary purpose of the OM/000 body?good focus and clarity under a lighter hand. I understand it?s a cost savings spec. And I understand that a longer scale may require a stiffer bracing, but contemporary Martins aren't as structurally delicate as genuine pre-War models?particularly the lightly braced Addy top dreads with forward placement of the 20?s. So I find models like this to be overbuilt. I prefer the 000 to any other body size. It is focused, articulate, and clear. Not to mention very comfortable. And properly built, it does more than any other size while still exhibiting tonal character. In my experience, the best build combination is a 000 with short scale neck (for a fuller note), an Addy top (for greater projection and dynamic range than Sitka; the resonance fill out when its ?played-in?), and ?? scalloped bracing for greater responsiveness and a more open tone. (Heck, even the 000-16RGT had scalloped bracing.) Whatever tonewood is chosen for the back/sides will benefit from these specs. Now what I've just described doesn't exist in Martin?s Standard Series. You?d have to hunt down a discontinued Authentic, Marquis, or Signature Edition; or go through the Martin Custom Shop. If neither of those options are in your budget, Eastman makes two excellent models with these specs: the E20-OM (Addy/Rosewood) and the E10-OM (Addy/Mahogany). I've got the E20-OM. It has powerful low end and commanding trebles. It may not have the unmistakable Martin tone I?m addicted to, but it?s close, and it has the dynamic range and fullness resonance that the 000-MMV lacks, and with just as much projection. To be honest, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Martin makes a Retro Series version of the 000-28. I?m sure they can get their hands on a ?45 (or something) 000-28 to do the imaging. If so, I?ll be able to pass the Eastman along to my nephew, allowing me to keep it in the family.

Martin's Best Kept Secret

By

from Martin CT

Comments about Martin Custom 000MMV Solid Wood Rosewood/Sitka Acoustic Guitar:

I stumbled upon a used one by chance as I was working my way through the high-end room. Played a few riffs and was totally gob-smacked. The tone rivals my HD-28 while the build quality is high-end Martin. The top Gibsons and Taylors couldn't hold a candle to this beauty. Serious. I thought I was playing an 000-28EC. Nope. And the price. Without a doubt, Martin's best kept secret. Killer guitar. I've heard the same about the dread versions.

Great deal!

Comments about Martin Custom 000MMV Solid Wood Rosewood/Sitka Acoustic Guitar:

This is a fabulous guitar! It's got terrific playability and a wonderful, rich sound, with clear highs and lows. I've always been partial to smaller guitars and the 000-size is very comfortable. This guitar should cost much more. Plaudits to GC and Martin for making this marvel available.
