Martin wanted the guitars to be blue collar and inviting. Guitars that are meant to be picked up and played, not pampered. They specifically developed two finish options, Black Smoke and Whiskey Sunset, that they felt looked at home in a Mississippi juke joint or Memphis blues club. The open pore, ultra-thin satin finish lends itself to the weathered and broken-in appeal. The straight bridge and ivoroid button open back tuners add to the effect. They opted for mahogany back and sides with a Sitka spruce top because it works so well with a variety of small body sizes. This combination of wood is responsive enough for Lightning Hopkins fingerstyle playing or more modern blues using a pick. A single piece of ivoroid binding was chosen for the top with no binding on the back. The neck is mahogany with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Exotic and ultra-high quality materials crafted by America’s premier guitar builder at an affordable price.

Comments about Martin 17 Series 00-17S Acoustic Guitar:
First of all, I am a fan of CF Martin so my expectation is high to begin with. I was very much in need of a smaller body guitar for the purpose of casually playing and writing music. My dreadnoughts are often too big for this purpose so I went looking. Also on my list of requirements was the use of mahogany tone woods and a gritty bluesy tone. Then here comes the 00-17s 12-fret guitar. It meets and exceeds my list of requirements. As far as color/finish, the Black Smoke really stood out - so I went for it. What a lovely guitar - it is a guitar that begs to be played. This guitar actually inspires you to play. The last guitar to move me this way was the Martin D-15M.
Well, try this wonderful, lightly built, vintage sounding guitar - it is a joy.
