Overview

The Martin 000CX1 Acoustic Electric Guitar is an earth-friendly update of the classic 000 design. Features a solid spruce top, HPL (High Pressure Laminate) body, a cutaway for full access to the entire fingerboard, and Fishman® Classic 4 Sonicore electronics. Martin has substituted specially engineered alternative materials such as the HPL wood fiber laminate and Micarta in place of increasingly scarce hardwoods.

I pulled one of these guitars off the rack at Guitar Center thinking it was going to be junk. I must admit I was surprised by its tone and playablility. I would have thought that I was playing a nice mid-priced guitar. It does not have the characteristics of a fine guitar but it seems to be well worth its price. The workmanship, while not first class was good. I would say that it is expensive for the type of material it is made from because the only real wood content is the spruce top and while the spruce was not of the highest grade, it compared reasonably to Martins selling in the $2,000 - $2,500 range. If you are looking for a good metal string acoustic guitar and can't go a lot higher than this price range, I would say this is a sonic bargain. Since so much of the material in this guitar is manmade and does not have the moisture absorbency issues of wood, I would guess this guitar has some longevity and would not be prone to cracking and other types of would defects. The exception is the spruce top in which I would be very careful in selecting the guitar to make sure there are no signs of cracks forming or signs of major coloration differences within the grain of the wood top. This is a hard guitar to rate because the tone and playability are probably 3-4 star quality, but the materials and questions of long-term playability are not known because of its relative newness. I might have rated it higher, but the workmanship and tone, while good, did not warrant a 5 star rating. If one was asking about the suitability of this guitar for a relatively new player who is likely to stick with learning, I would say its suitability for such a person would be 5 stars because of the value. A good guitarist would want to spend some more money for a guitar containing finer wood material. But, there may not be a big difference between the two. Without complete knowledge, the answer is always "play it before you buy it". If for some reason you cannot play it first, then make sure you can return it. In summary, this guitar appears to be one of good value that players of limited means or developing talent would appreciate. I have written this review with the assumption that the guitar was made in the USA. I would reduce the rating it it were made in China or other country where the labor expectations are not as high and where the Martin team attitude does not exist.

I love the build quality, it is well constructed. Not a big fan of so much artificial material. It doesn't play well and only sounds good with Martin strings (which get dull after only a few days). The fingerboard is rough and the neck rubs my thumb raw when moving up and down. You can get pretty much the same guitar in the Martin 000X1AE for much less.

Martin 000CX-1E

By 2Shelbys

from Baltimore, Maryland

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

These Martin people are amazing. How they can make a guitar with an HPL back and sides sound so close to a solid wood guitar, and even smell like a solid wood guitar, is beyond me. I play a lot of Steve Howe's Travis-picked pieces and the clarity of this Martin is astounding from the lowest note to the highest.

Working Musician's Martin

By Pat

from Weirton, WV

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've had this guitar for over a year so I can honestly review it. I've done over 100 gigs with this Martin and it has been a great guitar. It's priced very fair, plays nice, and sounds great. The solid pine top allows gives it a really good sound (even with the HPL back & sides). I like it because It sounds & feels like an expensive guitar, but I don't have to worry about it at gigs as much as I would a more expensive guitar. It has great onboard electronics. Stays in tune really well once the new strings are stretched. This has been and will be one of my main gigging guitars. I would definitely buy the 000cx1e again.

MARTIN FOR UNDER A GRAND?

By austex

from austin, tx

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Who would believe a Martin for under a grand. But I tell you this guitar is amazing. I was sooo close to buying a Takamine but while waiting for sales help I picked up the CX1E. I was sold. Deep rich tone, crisp highs and warm mids and a breeze to play. Still can't believe I own one. Only draw back, and it's slight, is no built it tuner.

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

From when I picked it up to when I actually purchased it with no hassle in guitar center, Kendall, Florida; this guitar has done nothing but amaze me at it's ereasonable pricing and brilliance. It has a beautiful Martin warmth and is powerful when plugged in. I will use it soon to record with, but have already experienced it's greatness when played live. An absolute must for any a finger-picker. Strums beautifully as well. Sheer joy....

The BEST of the "lower-end" Martins

By JP

from PA

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a great finger-style guitar. I'm not much of a strummer, but, if finger-style is your bag, then this is your guitar!!! Crystal clear highs, and chest-rattling lows. I play in an open-G tuning for the most part, and the low D and G strings (normally the E and A) sound AMAZING. As do the higher strings. This thing resonates, and holds it's own as a straight-up acoustic...but, plugging it in is a pleasure too! The Fishman electronics are superior! The only thing they could have added to this guitar would be a built in tuner from Fishman. But, otherwise...this guitar is my newest addiction! BUY IT!

Awesome, brilliant with rich deep tomes and responsive mid and high's. Reproduction through the Tascam CD recorder and the Rockit 5s could make a person cry! Thanks Yancy and Eric @ Toledo, and FYI my wife hasn't left me yet but I need to write her a song ASAP! This guitar for the $ is an unbelievable deal!

MARTIN = QUALITY

By JPH

from WEIRTON, WV

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been gigging with this guitar for over a year. I just got it back from Martin & CO. in Nazareth, they replaced the nut only because it wore down due to heavy usage. I perform 2 to 3 nights weekly and this guitar has been my workhorse. I also own a Taylor that cost more than 2wice as much as this model Martin. The Taylor is a great guitar, but I can honestly tell you, don't be afraid of laminate (hpl) back & sides. Especially when plugging in. Most of the tone comes from the top, this Martin has a solid pine top and sounds unbelievable. The Fishman electronics compliment the 000CX1E. It plays, feels, & sounds TOP NOTCH!!! I can tell you from experience, for the money, this guitar goes above & beyond dependable. GO MARTIN.
