I pulled one of these guitars off the rack at Guitar Center thinking it was going to be junk. I must admit I was surprised by its tone and playablility. I would have thought that I was playing a nice mid-priced guitar. It does not have the characteristics of a fine guitar but it seems to be well worth its price. The workmanship, while not first class was good. I would say that it is expensive for the type of material it is made from because the only real wood content is the spruce top and while the spruce was not of the highest grade, it compared reasonably to Martins selling in the $2,000 - $2,500 range. If you are looking for a good metal string acoustic guitar and can't go a lot higher than this price range, I would say this is a sonic bargain. Since so much of the material in this guitar is manmade and does not have the moisture absorbency issues of wood, I would guess this guitar has some longevity and would not be prone to cracking and other types of would defects. The exception is the spruce top in which I would be very careful in selecting the guitar to make sure there are no signs of cracks forming or signs of major coloration differences within the grain of the wood top. This is a hard guitar to rate because the tone and playability are probably 3-4 star quality, but the materials and questions of long-term playability are not known because of its relative newness. I might have rated it higher, but the workmanship and tone, while good, did not warrant a 5 star rating. If one was asking about the suitability of this guitar for a relatively new player who is likely to stick with learning, I would say its suitability for such a person would be 5 stars because of the value. A good guitarist would want to spend some more money for a guitar containing finer wood material. But, there may not be a big difference between the two. Without complete knowledge, the answer is always "play it before you buy it". If for some reason you cannot play it first, then make sure you can return it. In summary, this guitar appears to be one of good value that players of limited means or developing talent would appreciate. I have written this review with the assumption that the guitar was made in the USA. I would reduce the rating it it were made in China or other country where the labor expectations are not as high and where the Martin team attitude does not exist.

I love the build quality, it is well constructed. Not a big fan of so much artificial material. It doesn't play well and only sounds good with Martin strings (which get dull after only a few days). The fingerboard is rough and the neck rubs my thumb raw when moving up and down. You can get pretty much the same guitar in the Martin 000X1AE for much less.

Bang for your buck

By kelley nelson

from Denver, CO

I bought this guitar as a finally-kicked-my-loser-boyfriend-out-of-my-house present to myself. I own several acousitcs that I've acquired over the years, mostly sentimental that never leave the house. When I bought this I was just starting to get the courage to play solo in public and I wanted to be able to easily plug in and play. I wasn't having any luck finding anything that sounded good within my price range. I was discouraged so I went into the out-of-my-price-range room just to dream a little. Mixed among the $2K and up guitars I find this nice little small bodied Martin, with a cutout and a pickup for under a grand! I thought there was something wrong with it or it probably didn't sound so great. Nope! It's my best guitar and I've made the most easy money with it. Everyone always asks what I'm playing, they see Martin and say OOOoh..it's a Martin. Like I'm playing some $3,000 guitar. I say no, this is just a cheapie one...under a grand! They are always just as shocked as I was. I also play with some guitar snobs that have no choice but to admit my $700 Martin holds its own against their $2,500 Taylor. I've had it for 6 years and I've had to adjust the truss rod once and that was just to fix it after I had a place do a "tune-up" on it and when I got it back it was fretting out on the upper frets. I love this guitar and absolutely recommend it to anyone and everyone I can.

You Get More Than What You Pay!

By bill brandine

from Huntington, NY

When you purchase this instrument, you're purchasing a sound. The sound of a Martin guitar. Since the sound of a guitar really comes from the top, as well as the inner construction, the solid sitka spruce top and the classic Martin A-frame of the 000CX1 really do provide the Martin sound. Pick one up, demo it, and within minutes after hitting a few ringing chords you'll be surprised at what you're hearing. Now, demo a much more expensive Martin. The difference in sound quality will not be that much, as some of you won't hear any. Also, many reviewers think the HPL body is cheap-looking. I don't. Sure, it's not solid wood, but it's actually nicely done for a laminate. And more durable, by the way. And one of the best things about this model... the Fishman Sonicore. It's outstanding. I wouldn't have expected this level of electronics on a guitar under a grand. Fishman makes lesser electronics and that's what I would have expected at this price point. Unless you're a serious working musician, or you have disposable money, the CX1, (or it's X-series equivalent in a dreadnaught for about the same money) is well worth the investment. The 000 style is much easier too on your shoulder. Naturally, it doesn't have the bottom of a dreadnaught. But, it has a brighter tone than the dreadnaught, and acoustically, it's certainly as loud. The more I play it, the more I realize the value I got. Good luck shopping.

Awesome guitar

By Jason Oguma

from tempe, arizona

First time writing a review. First off ordering was a breeze and I wanted guitar delivered to local GC store so I can pick it up. No problem. Also I noticed price was lower at another online store. No problem they matched price. Also saw they were offering a 15% discount. No problem they matched that as well. Guitar was sent with UPS tracking system. Received guitar in a couple of days. Only did that to sell a guitar to get this one. Now about the guitar. Was perfect out of box. Has that wood smell. I took it to my local luthier guy to double check it. He said everything is great, neck straight, no issues. I replaced strings to a medium gauge. Sounds great. Must admit though this guitar sounds great unplugged, but it screams and is beautiful plugged into either a acoustic amp or pa system. The best thing is when Martin sends you their ownership card for buying this guitar. No better feeling. You will not be disappointed. Plays and sounds better than $1500 guitars.

A Great Guitar @ a great price

By Steve Criner

from Blacksburg, VA

This is a Martin! The minute you strum it you can hear that clear crisp sound that makes Martin the guitar to have. The action is great and it is one heck of a lot of guitar at a very reasonable price. I have had mine for over a month now and I can't say enough about it. The only negative I should alert you to is you will have a compulsion to play it, which makes it very difficult to put down.

Fantastic!

By Don McPherson

from Boise, ID

After having not played for about 10 years, I picked up my old Ovation to play a little and my wrist and fingers started to hurt immediately. This gave me a good execuse to head to Guitar Center and browse. After playing all the guitars in the $1000 range, I kept coming back to 000CX1. I've been playing it for about a week now and I am 100% satisfied! Thanks for a great product that's helped me get back to playing!

Amazing Guitar!

By Frank Froese

from South Abington Township, PA

I was in the market for a more high end guitar. After looking around my local Guitar Center for a while, I picked up this guitar. I was instantly in love with it! The tone is bright and clear, with the perfect balance of lows, mids and highs. The action was perfect. The guitar even smells great! I've been playing it out for about a month now, and it never disappoints. It sounds great unplugged, pretty good plugged in on it's own... I play live with it run through a Fishman Aura Spectrum DI pedal. I always get compliments on how great my guitar sounds. I also record using the pedal. You don't need anything to get great sound from this guitar though.

So. Awesome.

By awesomepants

from Boise, Idaho.

So, I bought this guitar about seven months ago, and I LOVE IT. It's beautiful. Its sound is super full and it's just plain durable. Being a camp counselor and in charge of music--micless--I can really appreciate the way it resonates. Plus, the playability is sick--I can move up and down the fretboard with ease. It's absolutely effortless to play this thing. Unfortunately, I don't really have the amps to hook it up to anything, but my friend and I do record music sometimes on his home system, and it comes out pretty well. (I think any sketchiness on the recording is due to the equipment--he picked it up at a yard sale and is currently working on getting it in perfect condition.) This was an investment I wasn't planning on making--I'd been expecting to get something more in the $400 range--but I'm glad I did. Side note: I always use my humidifiers with it, wherever I go, if only because my grandfather has a much older Martin that he cracked because he left them out. Therefore, be prepared to get new humidifiers every few months, especially if your guitar in an "inside" and an "outside" guitar. Happy playing!

The martin 000-cx1 is just a piece of art. I can assure you that after buying this guitar I have no regrets. With it's pure solid sound it never gets old, plus the guitar looks plainly astonishing. I had no idea exactly what I was looking for but after looking and looking this guitar was the perfect fit.

By John

I played a friends Martin a few days before i ordered this and just fell in love with its sound and easy playability. I also have a fender acoustic, Koah (korean), and a classical and this martin blows them away. I will never play/buy anything else other than a martin henceforth. 10 yrs Playing
