I pulled one of these guitars off the rack at Guitar Center thinking it was going to be junk. I must admit I was surprised by its tone and playablility. I would have thought that I was playing a nice mid-priced guitar. It does not have the characteristics of a fine guitar but it seems to be well worth its price. The workmanship, while not first class was good. I would say that it is expensive for the type of material it is made from because the only real wood content is the spruce top and while the spruce was not of the highest grade, it compared reasonably to Martins selling in the $2,000 - $2,500 range. If you are looking for a good metal string acoustic guitar and can't go a lot higher than this price range, I would say this is a sonic bargain. Since so much of the material in this guitar is manmade and does not have the moisture absorbency issues of wood, I would guess this guitar has some longevity and would not be prone to cracking and other types of would defects. The exception is the spruce top in which I would be very careful in selecting the guitar to make sure there are no signs of cracks forming or signs of major coloration differences within the grain of the wood top. This is a hard guitar to rate because the tone and playability are probably 3-4 star quality, but the materials and questions of long-term playability are not known because of its relative newness. I might have rated it higher, but the workmanship and tone, while good, did not warrant a 5 star rating. If one was asking about the suitability of this guitar for a relatively new player who is likely to stick with learning, I would say its suitability for such a person would be 5 stars because of the value. A good guitarist would want to spend some more money for a guitar containing finer wood material. But, there may not be a big difference between the two. Without complete knowledge, the answer is always "play it before you buy it". If for some reason you cannot play it first, then make sure you can return it. In summary, this guitar appears to be one of good value that players of limited means or developing talent would appreciate. I have written this review with the assumption that the guitar was made in the USA. I would reduce the rating it it were made in China or other country where the labor expectations are not as high and where the Martin team attitude does not exist.

I love the build quality, it is well constructed. Not a big fan of so much artificial material. It doesn't play well and only sounds good with Martin strings (which get dull after only a few days). The fingerboard is rough and the neck rubs my thumb raw when moving up and down. You can get pretty much the same guitar in the Martin 000X1AE for much less.

Martin 000CX-1E

By 2Shelbys

from Baltimore, Maryland

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

These Martin people are amazing. How they can make a guitar with an HPL back and sides sound so close to a solid wood guitar, and even smell like a solid wood guitar, is beyond me. I play a lot of Steve Howe's Travis-picked pieces and the clarity of this Martin is astounding from the lowest note to the highest.

Working Musician's Martin

By Pat

from Weirton, WV

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've had this guitar for over a year so I can honestly review it. I've done over 100 gigs with this Martin and it has been a great guitar. It's priced very fair, plays nice, and sounds great. The solid pine top allows gives it a really good sound (even with the HPL back & sides). I like it because It sounds & feels like an expensive guitar, but I don't have to worry about it at gigs as much as I would a more expensive guitar. It has great onboard electronics. Stays in tune really well once the new strings are stretched. This has been and will be one of my main gigging guitars. I would definitely buy the 000cx1e again.

MARTIN FOR UNDER A GRAND?

By austex

from austin, tx

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Who would believe a Martin for under a grand. But I tell you this guitar is amazing. I was sooo close to buying a Takamine but while waiting for sales help I picked up the CX1E. I was sold. Deep rich tone, crisp highs and warm mids and a breeze to play. Still can't believe I own one. Only draw back, and it's slight, is no built it tuner.

From when I picked it up to when I actually purchased it with no hassle in guitar center, Kendall, Florida; this guitar has done nothing but amaze me at it's ereasonable pricing and brilliance. It has a beautiful Martin warmth and is powerful when plugged in. I will use it soon to record with, but have already experienced it's greatness when played live. An absolute must for any a finger-picker. Strums beautifully as well. Sheer joy....

The BEST of the "lower-end" Martins

By JP

from PA

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a great finger-style guitar. I'm not much of a strummer, but, if finger-style is your bag, then this is your guitar!!! Crystal clear highs, and chest-rattling lows. I play in an open-G tuning for the most part, and the low D and G strings (normally the E and A) sound AMAZING. As do the higher strings. This thing resonates, and holds it's own as a straight-up acoustic...but, plugging it in is a pleasure too! The Fishman electronics are superior! The only thing they could have added to this guitar would be a built in tuner from Fishman. But, otherwise...this guitar is my newest addiction! BUY IT!

Awesome, brilliant with rich deep tomes and responsive mid and high's. Reproduction through the Tascam CD recorder and the Rockit 5s could make a person cry! Thanks Yancy and Eric @ Toledo, and FYI my wife hasn't left me yet but I need to write her a song ASAP! This guitar for the $ is an unbelievable deal!

MARTIN = QUALITY

By JPH

from WEIRTON, WV

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been gigging with this guitar for over a year. I just got it back from Martin & CO. in Nazareth, they replaced the nut only because it wore down due to heavy usage. I perform 2 to 3 nights weekly and this guitar has been my workhorse. I also own a Taylor that cost more than 2wice as much as this model Martin. The Taylor is a great guitar, but I can honestly tell you, don't be afraid of laminate (hpl) back & sides. Especially when plugging in. Most of the tone comes from the top, this Martin has a solid pine top and sounds unbelievable. The Fishman electronics compliment the 000CX1E. It plays, feels, & sounds TOP NOTCH!!! I can tell you from experience, for the money, this guitar goes above & beyond dependable. GO MARTIN.

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

but for this master piece i shall, i decided i wanted to wait before i wrote the review on it to see how i liked the guitar over all. Pretty much i bought this guitar about a year ago, i play it at least 3 times a week live, and simultaneously at practices through out the week. I think this guitar is amazing, the sound the feel. the quality. i highly recommend this. I had a taylor 110c and the pickups on that were horrible. this guitar sounds way better plugged in and out. GO OUT THERE AND GET IT...ITS MY WORK HORSE......AND I NEVER WRITE REVIEWS!

Best Guitar in it's price range

By Jeff

from Temecula, CA

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I played comparable ($600 - $700 sales price) Takamine, Yamaha, Ibanez, and Laguna acoustics and picked the Martin. Things like "tone" are subjective and hard to compare in text. Yes, it "sounds great", but you'll have to take my word on it. What sold me was the playability, specifically the unfinished feel to the neck. With great action and a nice-feeling neck, this guitar is extremely easy and comfortable to play.

buying another one

By Tyler

from Charleston, SC

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have toured and recorded with this guitar extensively. Our producer wouldn't let me use any other acoustic on the album. He loved it more than any other gibson, etc sitting around. I'm buying a second one just like it so I can have an easy switch on stage for a alternate tuning. It's great. No complaints at all. I love it.

I played a friends Martin a few days before i ordered this and just fell in love with its sound and easy playability. I also have a fender acoustic, Koah (korean), and a classical and this martin blows them away. I will never play/buy anything else other than a martin henceforth. 10 yrs Playing

Nice sound but very disppointed

By strummergirl

from Tucson, AZ

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I am fairly new to the guitar world and have been shopping around online and in music stores for my first guitar. Upon finding this guitar I was simply blown away at the sound. The sound was awesome and I had a hard time putting it down even though I kept looking throughout the store. I was initially very excited about finding this particular guitar because I compared it to $2700 acoustic guitars and it sounded very close to those, so I decided to buy it. Little did I know that the construction of the sides and the back of the body is made of HPL textured finish laminate with a printed on mahogany pattern, aka: plastic! The sales person failed to mention that to me.....so I took it home. There were no attractive features to this guitar. No inlays of any kind on the neck, but it had inlaid boltaron around the rosette, aka: plastic. The finish on the front of the guitar...well, what finish? It was just plain blond colored wood that left nothing to be desired. Ultimately, I was looking for a nice sounding and attractive guitar and with this I got the nice sounding, but appearance wise it was exactly opposite of what I wanted. Its simply ugly. The fact that it was a Martin did nothing for me. Sound was the main feature to what I was looking for, not name brand. I just wasn't happy finding out that the guitar was mostly plastic, and I returned it less than 24 hours later. It was a good decision for me. I have since bought the Ibanez EW20MBENT that I compared to this Martin and the Ibanez sounds better than this Martin with the amp plugged in; without the amp the Martin is only a little louder. I saved $400!

First Martin

By Geoffrey Helms

from Wewahitchka, Florida

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have been trying out and researching various guitars for the last six months and about a month ago I found this Martin. At first glance I didn't think much of it but decided to play it anyway. Next thing I knew I kept on coming back to this particular guitar and began ignoring the more expensive guitars around it. I just got it home today and I would replace it in a heart beat if something happened to it. It is also great for the player with a bad back like mine since I don't have to stretch around a big body to play. Great sound, great price, and a great life long investment.

Bang for your buck

By kelley nelson

from Denver, CO

Comments about Martin 000CX1 Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar as a finally-kicked-my-loser-boyfriend-out-of-my-house present to myself. I own several acousitcs that I've acquired over the years, mostly sentimental that never leave the house. When I bought this I was just starting to get the courage to play solo in public and I wanted to be able to easily plug in and play. I wasn't having any luck finding anything that sounded good within my price range. I was discouraged so I went into the out-of-my-price-range room just to dream a little. Mixed among the $2K and up guitars I find this nice little small bodied Martin, with a cutout and a pickup for under a grand! I thought there was something wrong with it or it probably didn't sound so great. Nope! It's my best guitar and I've made the most easy money with it. Everyone always asks what I'm playing, they see Martin and say OOOoh..it's a Martin. Like I'm playing some $3,000 guitar. I say no, this is just a cheapie one...under a grand! They are always just as shocked as I was. I also play with some guitar snobs that have no choice but to admit my $700 Martin holds its own against their $2,500 Taylor. I've had it for 6 years and I've had to adjust the truss rod once and that was just to fix it after I had a place do a "tune-up" on it and when I got it back it was fretting out on the upper frets. I love this guitar and absolutely recommend it to anyone and everyone I can.
