  • Martin X Series Dreadnought

As reviewed by RICHARD on 8/30/2014

After spending decades as a "beginner" guitar player, I decided to get a little more serious about it. My old cheap 1980s department store guitar was limiting me as much as anything, so I decided to get a "step up" guitar. While I pretty much just play for me, I wanted something playable that I enjoyed hearing. I looked at a lot of guitars in the $250-$600 range. I tried dreadnoughts, OOOs, the GS mini, etc., from Yamaha, Taylor, Blueridge, Epiphone, Seagull... pretty much played the inventory. When I picked up the Martin DX-1 and strummed it, there was a richness of sound that kind of shook my soul. I considered the same version with the on-board electronics, but it was an additional $80 and I doubted I would use them anytime soon. If so, I understand that they can be installed for about $100, so I stayed with the simplicity f pure acoustics for now. I could talk about the HPL Stratabond, and solid sitka, etc., but that's just specs. To be honest, as a traditionalist, I was concerned about the synthetics in place of all solid woods that legacy instruments have. But in the end, I decided it was okay. I don't know why it sounds the way it does, don't really care. I just love the sound. There are no fret markers on the fretboard itself, but there are markers along the top. I haven't missed the front-facing markers a bit. No purfling, which is fine... I think too much decoration on an instrument makes it look pretentious anyway. The guitar is simple, but does not look cheap at all IMO, and I have had several unsolicited compliments on it. But acoustic guitars are about sound and playability, and the sound on this one really touched something in me. The richness of the sound is unmatched at this price point. Quite playable, intonation is dead on as you would expect. It comes, of course, with Martin strings which I find a little coarse feeling, so I am considering changing to some lighter, smoother ones (maybe Eddie Ball). But I want to have an extra set of the original strings on hand before I change in case it doesn't work out. If this is within your price range, you really ought to try this one before making a buying decision. Maybe it touches your soul, too.

  • The right guitar for me!

As reviewed by Eddie on 8/29/2014

My reason for choosing the Martin X1-D Custom was more for practical purposes than anything else. I currently travel to Colorado 5 or 6 times a year and I really don't like lugging around a guitar with me on airline flights. As much as I really wanted a rosewood Martin Grand Performance Acoustic-Electric, spending 4 times more for this purpose didn't make reasonable sense. The great news is, to me, the X1-D Custom dreadnaught style actually sounds better unplugged than the GPCPA4. Although when compared to the X1-DE (with built-in pickup), the GPCPA4 is far better when plugged in to a PA, which makes it a much better choice for stage performance. But stage performance is not what I will be using the X1-D Custom for. I tried pretty much every acoustic guitar in the room under $500 and nothing felt as easy to play or sounded as good as the X1-D Custom. It was better than many of the guitars over $500! The GC associate, Kris, was very helpful and understood what I was looking for and never tried to up-sell me. I believe the Martin X1-D Custom is an excellent entry level or casual use guitar. I suggest you give it a try.

  • X Series

As reviewed by carl on 8/30/2014

I have the 000X1AE, which, except for shape, very much like the X1D. I like all of the X series. I was blindfolded, handed guitars in this price range, and I picked this one, not knowing what brand it was. I still love it. I did lower the action some. Because of the laminate and composite materials used (except for the top), I feel free to take it anywhere, even camping. I can leave the HD28 at home, safe in the closet.
