  • Martin Backpacker AE left hand

As reviewed by Jim Engel on 11/2/2009

The Martin Backpacker is a convenient way to bring a guitar with you when traveling. My wife and I travel in a pickup truck pulling a 23 foot travel trailer, with a motorcycle in the pickup bed. I have brought a full sized acoustic, but it always seems in the way. The Backpacker takes up little room and is easy to store anywhere. Tonally, it is not up to a full size sound. Very light gage strings are called for; they don't have the fullness of regular light gage strings. The sound is passable, but you'll want to use a full size insturment to jam with others. The pickup sounds decent, but the output is weak, so weak in fact that I thought it was broken when I first received the guitar. Later on, I turned up the amplifier well beyond what I normally would use, and there it was.It actually sounded good, to the point of using it live. The action on the fretboard is high, so you'll need to order a bridge to trim and lower the action, unless you're into slide guitar. Well, that's it. Buy it, play it, and enjoy it for what it is;a travel guitar with decent tone, ability to amplify, in a convenient size.
