  • Just a little Heaven in your Hands!

The D 42 I found at the Knoxville Store is one of the smoothest playing guitars that I have ever tried, and I have tried many. Not the loudest, nor the lowest action, but a great mix of tone and smooth action. A few pickguard scratches from those have no respect for other folks, but not a major deal.

With the D-41 and D-45 looking almost identical, the D-42 looks classier and more distinctive.I like the snowflake shape inlays. All three sound incredible, but also sound similar. Can't go wrong with any of them, hard to understand the price difference from D-41 to D-45. Go play one,see if its for you.I was going to buy one on e-bay used for $ 3,000.In Modesto to try one first,I got lucky to buy a used 2005 D-42K2. A brand new condition Koa wood D-42 for $2,100. Supersweet deal on a supersweet guitar. I still love it after 8 months. Possibly the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen.

  • A Great Classic!

As reviewed by Timothy Brown on 6/1/2012

I purchased my D42 about a year ago now. I bought it as a replacement for my Taylor 714. Talk about a major step up in quality. Comparing the two is really apples to oranges, but I have to say that Martin creates tonal balance in their guitars unline any other guitar manufacturer that I have tried. I guess that's what you get for buying a guitar that has 180 years of history built into it. I did have a bit of buyers remorse initially since I had to make quite a few adjustments to the guitar during the set-up. You'd think that by spending this amount of money on a guitar it would show up nearly perfect, but that was not the case. After taking it to a guitar tech 2 times, including the installation of the LR Baggs Anthem pickup (which is amazing by the way), I still found that it was next to impossible to keep the guitar in tune. I was concerned about intonation problems. Finally after a 3rd set-up, and nearly a year of playing it, I would say that it is nearly flawless. More and more people come up to me after playing and tell me how amazing the guitar sounds. It really is a better guitar than I am a player (which is a good thing). I'm discovering that this guitar is really like a fine wine, it just gets better and better with age. A year after purchasing it I couldn't be happier. I chose the 42 over the 41 for both the look as well as the scalloped bracings. The snowflake inlays are relatively unassuming (as opposed to the large polygon inlays) while still giving it a beautifully rich look. The lows, mids and highs all project loudly from the guitar. It's also really easy to play. If you're searching for both a classic look and sound that will only improve over time, I highly recommend the D42.
