  • Incredible Value at Any Price

As reviewed by CHRIS PAULS on 10/17/2012

I have been looking for a great dreadnought for some time now. I probably should have just gone with a Martin to begin with, but I have really only heard the older ones that have ladder bracing and are over built and frankly just sound a little tight and lack punch. I fell into the trap of buying a boutique guitar for way too much money and then had serious buyer's remorse. Then, like a fool, I bought a Chinese made "boutique quality" guitar that was a huge disappointment. Finally, I read a couple reviews of the new D18 and decided to give it a try. I can honestly say that this dreadnought has blown away my expectations! It's got all the punch and sustain of my "high" end small maker guitar for much less money. It is drop dead gorgeous, light as a feather, AND it says Martin on it. The D18 is the standard by which all other dreadnoughts are measured, and Martin has definitely hit a homerun with this remake. Make sure you get the new one with scalloped forward shifted X bracing. They are easy to spot because the pickguard is tortoise shell, the tuners are open backed and the bridge pins are all black. Also, I can honestly say that I was very impressed with my local Guitar Center. I know they have the reputation of being a big box store, but the staff was really helpful and incredibly enthusiastic when the guitar came in. Shipping was free and insanely fast, and I got to use a coupon, so an already good price got even better. Not that I need it, but the 30 day trial was also a deal maker.

  • One Awesome Guitar

As reviewed by Randy Fernandes on 6/30/2012

Well I did a lot of research and decided to go with the Martin D-18 over the Taylor and Gibson Acoustic. No regrets whatsoever. I'm so glad I waited for the 2012 model because it has upgrades over the 2011 model plus it looks much nicer. I ordered it in May and picked it up in about 5 days from GC. I opened the box and I couldn't be happier. A nice sturdy case and a beautiful guitar in perfect condition, not even a blemish! And then when you play it, doesn't matter if you strum it hard or pick it lightly, the sound is very clean and clear from the bass notes to the high notes. This Martin also has a lot of volume if you need it. This D-18 performs, a lot of guitar for the money. Plus GC gave me a discount!

  • This is an incredible D-18, labeling is not clear...

As reviewed by KEN AUGHBENBAUGH on 6/26/2012

I don't usually do reviews, but this is an important exception. I am a pain in the ass comparative shopper. That being said, this "DreadnoughtI Acoustic is really a D-18 that is likely the best buy for the buck in the price range. Honestly, it has a voice that is to die for. I missed it under this description - don't make the same mistake. I have been searching long and hard for the guitar with the sound that spoke to me - as all the blogs tell us. I had previously had GC ship me in a D-18 from Sacramento which came with worn out frets and all kinds of finish cracking, a non-starter.. On a recent trip to FL, stopped into the Tampa store and thought I'd found the answer in a more recent vintage 18 w/nice Fishman discrete electronics installed, but when I got home, & played it for a couple of weeks, it had little punch & tone range - sounded muffled. I became convinced that I needed to get a used HD-28, though I don't really like the "bling" but even started looking at Gibson "Birds" & J45's, I still thought I preferred the understated look & concept of vintage Martin18's and especially the 1 3/4 nut which give a hair more margin of error for my less than precise fingering. Sadly, I took the Tampa D back to GC last Sat., and just before I stumbled back into their used & "high end room", ran into Ben who said he just unpacked a new D-18 with forward shifted scalloped X bracing, open geared butter bean tuners, ebony fretboard and bridge, 1 3/4" nut and performance neck. I had not dared hope for this - I was heading in a different direction. Took the new 18 back into the used room, and knew in a second that this was really different. Took a used HD-28 down off the wall, and , although beautiful, flawless shape and underpriced - it was just not as loud, clear and easy to play as this brand new 18. I traded up in minutes. This is the ONE, the sound, the features - do not miss this because of the unclear online name/labeling - this is the new 2012 D-18, NOT the 18-p. A lot more features than the price difference. This will bring me back, make me work hard to deserve a guitar that is so damn pure. I am coming back after a 2 decade lay-off, and I am trusting this instrument to help me get back to where I once belonged. I wanted to find the ideal used instrument, it is hard to make me happy, but this is as cool as it gets! Hope this is helpful to you, too...
