  • Best-kept secret of the Martin company.

As reviewed by Art on 6/28/2011

I have been a Martin guitar salesman since 2006, and have had the opportunity to play dozens of models in every configuration and line, from D-45s to D-15s to the Marquis and Golden Eras, to the "Authentic" lines. The SWDGT is the best-kept secret of all of them. It has this surprising yet truly spectacular warm, projective cannon-tone. The crazy thing is, it even sounds better with worn strings on it, meaning you don't have to put brand new strings on it every month to keep it sounding good like you often have to do with more expensive Martins. As soon as I started playing this one I knew I had to buy it - especially since it is priced WAY below a guitar of that quality should be priced. I played three SWDGTs and picked out the best one (it happened to be the oldest - these guitars age like champs). I then had to somehow keep any customers from discovering how great it was, until I could save up enough money to get it myself. Luckily, that didn't take much work. As soon as I told them it was "environmentally-friendly" most of them turned up their noses in disgust. Also, I guess people want all kinds of inlay and fancy crap, and this guitar is plain-jane in the looks department, so it got passed over. Suckers. I bought mine and immediately put an awesome Fishman active sound-hole pickup in it and I now have my dream acoustic that I've been drooling over for five years. Bottom line - if this didn't have "sustainable woods" or "cherry" printed on it, Martin could sell them for 2x the price, and that would be a fair price to sell them at. Fortunately for people who know better, this guitar is magic. MAGIC, I say!

  • A Steal of a Deal

As reviewed by Craig on 10/26/2006

So this is NOT your fancy, eye candy Martin as are many of their other acoustics are, but it is the sweetest Martin deal you can find. Up against the venerable D-28, the SWDGT sounds as full and detailed. Although this guitar is rather plain, it seems that Martin endowed it with all of their skills in reproducing sound. This guitar does nothing but sound terrific in any style played - from acoustic, bluegrass, rock ... doesn't matter. Although not ornate by other Martin standards, this is still a handsome guitar whose glossy top and mellow cherry coloring still give it the WOW factor. You can look at more expensive Martins, fancier Martins, limited Martins, but at the end of the day this just might represent the best value Martin guitar.

  • First Guitar-Glad a spent a little more

As reviewed by El N. on 5/8/2007

I purchased the '000' version of the Martin SWDGT. I have a smaller body that was not comfortable on the full sized dreadnought. For my first guitar I want quality and was willing to spend a little more for a solid wood product. The guitar has a wonderful sound. Bright and clear. I lean towards rock and blues music. Even my teacher has commented on how much he likes the sound and he plays a D-28.
