  • Very good

As reviewed by dianne Householder on 2/15/2012

This ukulele is very good and solid I've only had this for about 3 months been very satisfied. the case is very good but I would recommend getting a hard case but the case is good for just carrying around... it looks just like the picture, the grain is very nice I really like the size very easy to play in the car and everything like that. It has a very nice balance. it's kinda hard to tune with the friction tuners but i think I looks better and this thing smells so good If your looking for a good small ukulele I would recommend this

  • Sweet little guy

As reviewed by Morgan Spangle on 3/13/2014

I'm a beginner, playing for about three months, and this little soprano from Martin is well worth every cent! Easy to play, set up well with a nice action, it comes ready to go. The Martin strings are light and the tone, with the mahogany body, is just what you want from a uke - a little twang, a little beachy sound. For its size, it prjects nicely too. The gig bag that's included is also very nice - I recently took mine on the plane to Florida, and felt very comfortable walking around with it and sitting with it in the cabin (if you're checking, hard case needed for sure!). If yuo're a beginner like me, this Martin a good place to start - and you may not need anything else!

  • Pricey, Tiny, But A Real Martin

As reviewed by LGO on 6/17/2011

The Martin S1 Ukulele is the company's least expensive, all mahogany (no laminates) Soprano Ukulele. It is well made, has good intonation, 12 frets to the body, comes with a semi-protective gel-like bag, and would be a bargain if it was a little less. Indeed, there are many competitive all solid wood soprano ukes (Kala comes to mind), just as good, currently selling for much lower prices, so you're paying a lot for the Martin decal on the headstock. I recommend that you try to find one at a brick and mortar store so that you can inspect the uke before you buy it; I ordered a new one online recently and discovered it was a damaged, previously owned and returned item; quite a disappointment. On another note, the soprano size really is tiny, so you may want to consider a larger sized uke, such as a concert or tenor (I have an all mahogany Kala tenor). The tenor size is a little larger in body, and the neck is longer and that allows a longer scale with wider fret spacing. The little Martin S1 is fun though, and even though it is made at the Mexico factory, the quality of assembly is very high. Had I kept the S1 I'd ordered, I would probably have changed the strings and the tuners as I found the strings felt too thick and the friction pegs lacked precision in tuning. Friction pegs are traditional, but some traditions ought to pass into history. Overall, I give a thumbs up to the S1, but there are better values out there.
