Martin OM-28E Retro Series Orchestra Acoustic-Electric Guitar (108118159)
Availability:

A classic Orchestra model with modern electronics and a high performance neck.

A modern re-creation of the classic Orchestra model, the OM-28E Retro is ideal for the guitarist who enjoys fingerstyle techniques. The OM-28E Retro carries a distinct vintage-inspired design with modern playability.

C. F. Martin & Co. is inviting musicians to take a trip back in time with the introduction of a groundbreaking guitar technology available in the new four-piece Retro Series: D-18E Retro, D-45E Retro, HD-28E Retro, and OM-28E Retro. Paying homage stylistically and sonically to the iconic classic Martin guitars of the 1930’s and 40’s, this series features traditional non-cutaway Martin guitars incorporating significant advancements in plugged-in sound reproduction. The series exquisitely captures a sought-after sound, melding traditional models with state-of-the-art technology, and will appeal to musicians and guitar aficionados alike.

Martin designers dove back into the rich history residing in the Martin museum and chose world-class examples to use as “tone donors.” These guitars include a 1942 D-45, a 1941 D-28, a 1937 D-18 and a 1934 000-28 (long-scale) on loan from Vintage Instruments. Each of these guitars possesses unique tonal characteristics that can be attributed to the passing of time. The premise was to convince the new guitars into electronically behaving as if they were the museum guitars.

Developing the new Retro Series electronic foundation, Fishman electronically infused the essence of the museum instruments into the newly created Martin counterparts, a new technology for both companies. To build upon this “vintage-conditioned” sound, Martin Guitar teamed up with Fishman and Grammy Award -winning producer Bill VornDick at his historic Mountainside Studios in Nashville for a multi-step process. They utilized VornDick’s private collection of rare vintage and boutique microphones, many of which date back to the 30’s and are iconic recording industry microphones. This collection adds unique coloring to the plugged-in sound, reminiscent of the first microphones these museum guitars would have ever encountered in the professional recording studio.

The Retro series instruments are vintage in appearance but will have enhanced playability including a modern “High Performance Neck™” taper and modified low oval profile. They will all have the new Fishman F1 Aura + electronics system featuring “Easy Mode” with three pre-blended mic/pickup presets and all of the programmability and tweakability of the original F1 Aura in “Performance Mode. “

Great for studio or live, this series reproduces the pristine sound that until now could only be accomplished in a highly-controlled studio setting with talented engineers.

VornDick said it best after hearing the finished product, “The plugged-in sound of these instruments is by far, the best reproduced acoustic sound I’ve ever heard.” Includes case.

  • Nice guitar

As reviewed by Howard Fry on 12/15/2012

I jest purchased this guitar 3 days ago, is the easiest guitar to play , in my opinion this is the best guitar I've owned. The sound Is amazing unplugged it sounds like a much bigger guitar, then what it is I'm still trying to get used to the electronics haven't run it in my Bose system yet looking forward to doing that. I am still enjoying the sound of the acoustic part .. Would I buy this guitar again if I didn't have it ?.. you bet I would. So if you're looking for a smaller guitar, and yet you don't want to compromise on the sound this is the guitar you need to buy.

  • Retro edition adds a bit more resonance

As reviewed by John Osguthorpe on 5/21/2013

I learned (sort of) on a Yamaha 730, a "bats well above its' cost" solid wood guitar that suited just fine for the 3 years it took to get to decent competence at the leisurely pace I'd chosen. After such I added a Fender electric (HSS deluxe strat) and VOX (AC15 tube) amp to achieve some semblance of the 60-70s rock sound I'd originally taken up the guitar to achieve. However, the narrower neck made fingerpicking harder for my blunt fingers and I missed the acoustic sound while still loving what the Vox could do for my electric. So, rather than the path of serially expending funds on more expensive guitars that many of my friends have taken over decades I chose to bit the fiscal bullet and go for a OM 28E, for which Martin had just cooperated by adding the "retro" option. Yeah, I could have had similar in dreadnought size, but I liked how a OOO fit in my lap and the slightly less bass capability was balanced by the mellower articulation and better high end. Don't get me wrong, the HD 28E is great, but....my second choice, as was a comparable Taylor. As to the on board electronics and pickup under the bridge, yeah it affects sound in the acoustic mode compared to a regular OM 28 or D 28, but it is very very minor to my admittedly lousy ear. Interesting to watch the Clapton video that Martin PR released with the "retro", and Clapton signature, series. He used an OM 28 during recording of "Unplugged", not a OOO-28 as featured in the series. Whatever, my OM 28E came perfectly set up, and after my guitar tuner/repair guy played around with it for a few minutes he said "save your money, it's perfect". It is quite light, even with the electronics, probably per construction common in the 1930s Martins, and the Fishman Aura system offers a fine selection of vintage mike emulations specifically for this guitar. The guitar sustains tones a....long.....time, and the vibration of lower notes resonates in my chest. Anyhow, after a lot of "A vs B vs C and so on" comparisons in guitar stores - y'all know the names of the better guitar makers - and figuring out I liked a full width neck and OOO size, this guitar was it. And, I still like mucking around with the strat, cause I'm a child of the 60s, but for just laying back and strumming out a tune with a glass of wine after a day at work (and you gotta work to afford this baby), it's the retro Martin.

  • I'm now finished looking for a guitar. This one is IT.

As reviewed by Michael Kennedy on 3/4/2013

I know finding the right guitar for any player is, in a way, a bit of a quest. I should know, since I've bought something like 20 guitars over the years. However, I now feel my quest is finished. For the most part, I've had Martin and Taylor guitars. They've all been good to excellent musical instruments. I have no complaints (well, those travel guitars are total plastic crap, but anyway.....). What is important is that none of them -I repeat- none of them match the quality of this instrument. Frankly, I think it's alive. The craftsmanship is amazing, the sound is pure, and it's well worth the expense. I doubt Guitar Center will publish this review for one reason - I'm done buying guitars. Thanks, but I've found what I want. Oh, I'll be back for strings, and other accessories, but as far as a guitar, I've found what I've spent years looking for. Whether this guitar is for you is your decision, however, I suggest you try one and see what you think. The Retro series has three other guitars you might want to try as well, but in any case, I suggest you go for it and see what you think.
