  • Martin Backpacker Nylon

As reviewed by David on 5/10/2010

The Martin Backpacker Classical is an excellent value for the money, how else can one got a decent Martin (even made in Mexico) for less than a grand? Kudos to Martin for not slapping on the ridiculous left handed premium. The compact Backpacker has an excellent sound for such a small instrument, others have mentioned it sounds a bit like a lute which is not a bad thing at all. The 15 fret scale is a bit limited, but for its intended purpose (a travel guitar), quite serviceable. The unique shape does make it difficult to play without a strap and the action out of the box is a bit high for my tastes, but that can be easily remedied. Martin doesn't allow you to register it online, which is an inconvenice, it also has only a 1 yr instead of a lifetime warranty. If Martin had extended the fret board to 20 (there appears to be room)and added a little something to balance it better (there are forums which give work-arounds), I'd have rated it a full five stars. However, for the money and its intended purpose it is an excellent value. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a compact travel guitar.

I love this little guitar! I have a busy schedule and don't have much time to practice. When I saw this little guitar, I had to have it. I have taken it to work and on the plane several times. It fits perfectly in the overhead cabins on planes and has a great sound. I hightly recommend it.
