Great sound from a Little Martin!

I am quite thrilled with my Little Martin Guitar LX1E. The sound is rich and bold, as I have come to expect from Martin. It is a great guitar to have out and not take up a bunch of space. I plan to use it as a back-up guitar when playing live. In fact, it sounds so good, that I recorded it the other night with great results. A couple features that rock: 1)It has a control panel with volume and tone. 2)The battery can be changed from the outside panel. 3)The gig bag is very nice. 4)It feels great to play...smooth and easy. 5)The action is impressive. 6)It is so darn CUTE!! I also recommend it to those who enjoy small bodied guitars...I've never played a guitar soooo comfortable. I have a very nice, much more expensive Martin that is in its case now because I dig this Little Martin so much.

Nice Compromise Between Travel and Tone

I own a Backpacker with pickup and have tried several travel guitars over the years. I don't buy acoustic guitars without electronics anymore just because of the versatility that electronics can provide, even if it is just for tuning. Acoustically the LX1E guitar is pretty good. The medium gauge strings and shortened scale are only objectionable if you play a full size light strung acoustic prior to picking this guitar up. Otherwise the tone is pure though somewhat sterile. I think the solid top helps this guitar quite a bit, so consider upgrading if you can afford it. The electronics panel is near the end pin which is fine but the volume and tone controls are not intuitively placed and I think the direction of increase should be reversed. It's good enough that I'm considering selling the Backpacker and my beater acoustic guitar for campfire and fun.

More details of included

Some info on the LX1E that may not be available within these reviews or anywhere else. The LX1 and LX1E have the solid top and the LXM & LXME have the High Pressure Laminate (HPL) top. For a few more dollars I got the solid wood top with the reportedly better sound that I now need to protect a little better than the HPL. Sides and back are laminates also. The included gig bag is made by TKL and equivalent to their model 4575 Black Belt Original 3/4 Size Guitar Bag. This is the one with the metal backpack strap style adjusters. It is well padded but cannot protect as well as a hardcase. GuitarCenter.com offers the Gator GWE-Acou-3/4 Hardshell 3/4-Size Acoustic Guitar Case at the time I wrote this. The guitar comes pre-strung and includes a 9 volt battery. There is no pick so beg some off the saleperson when you purchase the guitar. Monitoring via the amp jack with headphones will not work without a headphone amp or guitar amp with headphone jack. I'm gonna try my stereo to see if that works also. There is no/off switch for the electronics. There are volume and tone adjusters. I recommmend removing the battery unless you plan to use while connected to an amp and remove it again immediately after use. Batteries have a way of corroding only when you don't expect them to. A guitar strap is not included and neither is a user manual. I hope this helps.

my favorite guitar

I had a Martin Backpacker for many years and a few very cheap full size guitars. I always liked the backpacker for its portability but the mini Martin blows it away in sound. I am now fortunate enough to own a couple nice full size guitars which I play most of the time but the guitar that I'd keep over all of them is the mini. The portability matched with the adequate sound makes this the mini mighty workhorse. I mail ordered mine and my only complaints were some rough areas on the cross-beacing and of course a few bucks knocked off the price would be nice.

What a surprize!

This Little Martin is great. I have a 1972 D-28 I got new. This martin, if played with the finesse neccassary to play a smaller guitar, sounds wonderful. Very Melodic and crisp, clean and full sounding, all in one. I know the price is extremely low for this guitar. I bought the Model with the built in microphone and it sounds great! Remember, a smaller guitar needs to be played softer, not hammered on for the true beauty of its sound to shine. WELL WORTH THE MONEY AND MORE.
