I am the pickest person I know when it comes to the sound of my guitars. The pride and joy of my collection is a 1988 Martin D42 #9 of 75 made. For years now I have tried every type of string that I could get my hands on that would completly capture the nature of the Martin sound. Most strings give you a great bass and mid-range but usualy fall short in clearity, brilince, and sustain when you move into the higher regesters be on the 7th or 8th fret. Granted most Martin players don't play up there because the drednought is usualy thought of as a bluegress or flatpickers guitar. Simply put this string set does it. It gives you the same warmth as you get in lower end, in the high end of the guitar with a brilince and sustain that I can't hear in most other strings. Not only do they bring these tones out in the Martin they do it to every other guitars in my collection like (Alvares Yairi, Taylor, Gibson, Washburn, and others). I've used d'adario's, Elixiers, Dean Markley Alcamey's, and others for along time but these FX740's are far superior to any string I've ever used. When you don't have to EQ an accoustic to bring out all the tones in a studio setting you know that you got right.

  • Not for every guitar

I purchased these for my brother and his guitar. It made a huge difference and sounded great. I decided to go ahead and get a set for my own acoustic which was due for a change, and well it's not quite as good. I believe the lows are just a little too high and "metallic" sounding for me. The highs sound great though. Over all a great set of strings, and very nice on the fingers. Overall though, as with every set, it's just a matter of personal preference. I'd likely get these again, but swap out the top strings.
