I bought this amp head about a month ago......could not be more pleased. Of course it is not a tube amp, which some Marshall lovers will not be able to get over. The tone is very warm, effects are very good for not using pedals, and the volume is loud. I paired it with the cabinet in the picture, great pair. I love the Marshall products, this one does not disappoint. If you are expecting tube amp quality for this price, you are nuts. If you want a great sounding amp for a great price, this is the one. I tried lots of others in the price range, hands down, this one rocks.

I went to my nearest Guitar Center to try this amp out, thinking I would be buying it. I already have an MG100HDFX and I was looking to upgrade because of the ability of the HCFX to dial in different sounds and store them, and the availability of a four-way switch. Also, I figured that since it was the same series, just a newer version, that the tone would be comparable. Boy, was I wrong. I brought my guitar to the store and plugged into the HCFX right away. I wasn't really worried about the clean tone as much as the overdrive, so I dialed in the same EQ settings, reverb, etc. that I use on my HDFX's overdrive channel. I was very surprised at what I heard, but there was still something else to try. It turns out that this guitar center had two used HDFX's, so the salesperson let me setup both heads right next to each other. I dialed in both amps the same way and switched between the two a few times. I was amazed at the difference. Now, I'm not trying to say that the HDFX is perfect or anything, but, for what I wanted, the HCFX just didn't cut it. The tone on the HDFX is brighter and cuts through a lot more than the HCFX. The HCFX is muddier, and sounds very processed in comparison to the HDFX. I like the extra FX and preset capabilities of the HCFX, but the tones that it produces, which is more important to me, are inferior to the HDFX, in my opinion. So, in conclusion, the HCFX didn't work for me and I went home empty handed. If you like your distortion muddy and bass-heavy, then you may not have a problem with this amp, but, for my money, the HDFX is still better.

Comments about Marshall MG Series MG100HCFX 100W Guitar Amp Head:

In my years of playing in gigging bands(20+)I have played both ss and tube amps. I have never been as happy with a solid state amp as I am with the Marshall Mg100hcfx amp head and matching cab. I have four four hour shows with it and it is punchy and cuts through the mix all while handling a variety of music from Dillon to Metallica. A little bit of tweaking is required. Let's face it, we are guitar players; the tweaking never ends. I play mostly small clubs and bars which is where solid state is able to shine. If I was able to crank a JCM 800 that's the way to go. In my environment, ears would bleed. I use the crunch setting gain fullbore with a Wylde overdrive and classic crybaby wah using a Wylde Audio Odin(amazing guitar) with active pups. If you play small venues as I do, and you value the patrons hearing and your own, this is a great low cost option.

bought this at guitar center a few months ago, I mostly play clean with a digitech rp 360 in front hooked into a bad horsie wah pedal, got it sounding awesome tube like, need to get a good strat as this 249 dollar Ibanez sounds very muddy but overall im happy its my first half stack a lot of power and marshall brown sound as eddie would put it probably do a good size gig with it cause it can get loud overall very happy with this beast...

MG100HCFX Head and MG slant cab

Comments about Marshall MG Series MG100HCFX 100W Guitar Amp Head:

I actually bought the slant cab for this amp before the head. I used the cab with an Ibanez Tube Screamer amp and I thought it sounded wonderful but the combination didn't have quite enough headroom as could be expected. I played a gig with some friends of mine who provided me with a Marshall half stack with one of the older Marshall solid state heads. I thought it sounded great. I play guitar and pedal steel and it was nice to play through an amp that handled both well. When I got back in town I went to GC and picked up the MG100HCFX to go with my cab. I am very pleased with the combination. The clean channel is very sparkly with my Tele and Strat and having all that low end is nice too. I spent a little time with the manual and that help a lot. Once I learned the basics of programming the amp, I was able to get anything I wanted out of it. The amp has loads of volume available but it doesn't require turning it up loud to sound good. I play blues, rock, and country and the sounds available from this amp are very suited to those genres, and the bonus is that my pedal steel sounds good through it as well. The effects in this amp are very serviceable as well. Since I've only had the amp for a short while I can't speak Ito the reliability of it but it looks well built. I love having a 412 cab in such a small package, I have added some casters to make moving it around a little easier. I also ordered the programmable footswitch but I haven't received it yet. I own several smaller tube amp combos and was a little skeptical about purchasing a solid state amp, but I am very pleased with this amp. I will spend some time with this amp and play some jobs with it and update this review in a few months.

    Nice amp

Comments about Marshall MG Series MG100HCFX 100W Guitar Amp Head:

I've only had this a couple of weeks but so far I'm very pleased. It's pretty straight forward with a nice combination of effects, warm clean tone, and it is very loud with nice distortion level when you really twist the knobs. For the money it's a very good buy.

I got this amp for a gig my band BAD IDEA was playing at Studio Seven. It was more than loud enough. This amp sounds great and is super loud. If your looking for your first stage amp this is it.

    Amazing sound!!

    By Tim Rines

Comments about Marshall MG Series MG100HCFX 100W Guitar Amp Head:

I just returned another amp today and picked up this head and a cabinet. I really like the ease of use that this head offers. I am a beginner so I have a lot to learn, but I adjusted some knobs to dial in more bass, and & Nation Army was jamming in my garage. I couldn't be happier with this head. I would highly recommend to anyone at any level of experience...

A whole lot a Marshall goodness

    By danny triatan

    from Santa Clarita! CA

Comments about Marshall MG Series MG100HCFX 100W Guitar Amp Head:

Let me say that this Head with the matching cab is amazing. I can go from playing acdc to Metallica with the push of a button, one of the great additions is the damping (which makes the amp sound very similar to a tube amp). It looks great, sounds great, and plays great. When I plug thin S bad boy into my ax, I can play for hours on end. I also enjoy the 100watt power, it's also like having a loaded gun. Only thing I would recommend is getting ear plugs, you don't want to end up going deaf.

    Amazing stack

    By dan trist

    from Valencia California

Comments about Marshall MG Series MG100HCFX 100W Guitar Amp Head:

This is my first stack, and let me say, it's just about the best amp I've ever payed my hands on. I've got the head and matching slant cab which goes together like doughnuts and coffee. It's features include four channels, one clean, crunch, and two different overdrive channels. I can't name all of the generas you can play, but for example, jazz, blues, country, blues rock, soft rock, rock, hard rock, metal, heavy metal, thrash metal, death metal, and melodic death metal, oh and speed metal. Whatever you do, just don't listen to the haters, they find small problems, and make them seem like the amp is a compleat wreck. But it's really a great amp for the price, and is perfect for all styles. I'd recommend getting ear plugs so you don't blow out your ears, and keep in mind, it's a screaming 100watt amp:)

    Great Amp

    By Elliott Mazur

Comments about Marshall MG Series MG100HCFX 100W Guitar Amp Head:

Extremely impressed! This is a good amp for a low price. This is a big upgrade from my old VOX DA15 which doesn't even compare to this. This amp has all the controls needed to create a great sound. This amp also has six built in effects (Chorus, Phaser, Flanger, Vibe, Delay, and Octave). All of that for an amazing price. I highly recommend this amp!
