Overview

The format and versatility of the 1x12 40W Marshall Haze combo makes it the perfect partner for guitarists looking for a gig-worthy compact workhorse with enough features, power, and tone capabilities to handle a wide variety of situations. The cabinet is finished in high-grade vinyl with protective corners. Its vintage-style baffle is covered in a hand-stretched, acoustically transparent fret cloth, and the cabinet is finished with white piping and hard-wearing cabinet furniture to ensure your Marshall MHZ40C looks great.

With its EL34 power stage and ECC83 powered preamp, this portable 40W combo is designed to deliver to the guitarist's expectations through the power and feel of its tubes. Laid out in a top-loaded format, the Marshall Haze sports 2 distinctive footswitchable channels. In normal mode the tone circuitry of the Haze 40W provides low-gain sounds that are crisp and honest, providing a really nice clean tone. Dialed from a single volume control, the normal channel provides ample headroom to play at volume without losing the definition of your guitar.

The amp's boost switch in normal mode pushes the lower shapes of your tone by adding more gain and extra punch in the lower midsection for a fuller sound, perfect for fattening up thinner-sounding single coil pickups. The bright switch delivers added sparkle enhancing upper range of your guitar's sound and adding a crisper edge and more defined, brighter feel. Combined, the boost and bright switches will allow you to push the normal channel so that it stands out above the unmodified normal sound.

The overdrive channel of the Marshall Haze 40W delivers a classic tone option with a separate gain control. It's possible to dial in preamp drive that distorts the sound and makes it easy to access that more aggressive rock and blues attitude without losing the definition of your guitar. The addition of the boost switch to the overdrive sound really pushes you into lead territory with sustain to spare, ensuring that you can access that extra punch when required.

Both the normal and overdrive channels on the Marshall Haze amp use a shared 3-band EQ, allowing you to individually adjust the treble, midrange, and bass to suit your taste.

The effects section of the Haze MHZ40C combo contains custom-voiced effects and reverb that have been specially designed by Marshall to complement the feel and tone of the amplifier. Each effect selected on the channel (normal, overdrive and overdrive boost) will be remembered when you return to the channel, meaning you can set up your clean, overdrive, and lead sounds and return to them over and over again without having to readjust your settings. The warm emulated spring reverb has its own independent control, allowing you to add in as much or as little reverb as required. For those who want to completely remove the reverb circuitry from the equation, the reverb control is fitted with a positive off switch, meaning that by rotating the control counter-clockwise you can feel the control click indicating that the reverb circuitry is switched off.

Effects are selected using the top panel button and indicated by the color of the LED. Green indicates that Echo effect is selected, orange shows that Vibe is selected, red indicates Chorus. Effect depth and adjust controls allow considerable flexibility in a simple format for ease of use.

At first I thought this amp cost too much ,so I bought An MG50 Solid state by Marshall at G.C. in Plano Tx. The boys there gave me a great deal on it, I took it home & played it for about 3 weeks & it sounded so sweet.......Only problem was it had a small glitch in the volume knob, nothing I couldnt live with, but I;m just getting old & stuff like that bothers me nowadays so I packed it up & took it back to G.C. in Plano. They would have exchanged it gladly , but there were no more 50 watters to be found any where in Dallas...So,,,,I upgraded myself to a Haze 40...I am so happy I did cause the tubes in a Marshall are the mainstay of blues & rock,,the effects are strong, great reverb lots of power in a small room great studio & bar rig,,,,cant say enough good things about Marshall Haze,,Tone, Power , Crunch,Clean,, It will be a classic & I know cause I been playing guitar since 1967, I;ve seen a few classics in the making,,,Many Thanks To theboys at Guitar vCenter in Plano Tx. After testing this amp out in the store I purchased one with the 30 day satisfaction guarantee in mind. I overlooked the fact that the dirty channel didn't have enough gain for my style of music. I overlooked the fact that it needed to be EQd completely different than the clean channel (the amp used a shared EQ for both channels), and sounded more like a fuzz than an overdrive. I overlooked the fact that you can only use one effect at a time and there is no tap tempo for the delay. I overlooked these things because my plan with this amp was to run my pedalboard through a MARSHALL! The amp does take pedals very well. I wish it were $100 cheaper with a single channel and no effects. Anyway, in the end I did return it. I started experiencing some small issues I had read about in other reviews (buzzing while the amp was on standby, scratching and cutting in and out at one point, overall just REALLY noisy with my pedals). I contacted Marshall via email to see if they were aware of the problems with these amps and asked how their warranty worked but I got no response. Overall this is a great sounding amp with sick Marshall tone but it is unreliable. If you buy this amp get the Pro Coverage.

Just like the big boys!

By Shaun

from sacramento CA

WOW! Just got one from an inside friend at guitarcenter. The first time i pluged this in it sounded EXACTLY like my DSL 2000 Super Lead combo! If it had 5-6 times the vol, it would BE my 2000 SL! This thing would have ben perfect for some of the smaller gigs I did back in the day! Just the most beautiful natural tone ive ever herd out of somthing so small. Marshal either nailed one out of the park or nailed one into there foot depending on how many DSL tube combos there gonna sell now!

A name you can count on.

By David Rust

from San Clemente, CA

The Haze was recommended to me by a trusted friend and I pre-ordered one without even trying it out as it was not yet available. Watching the Marshall demo online got me excited about it, as well. This amp is LOUD! Unbelievably so, for it's size. I had 50wt MKII for years and the knobs were basically useless-just put 'em on 10 and go!The Haze's tonal qualities are outstanding and incredibly versatile. The effects are down-to-earth, straight ahead and solid basics. The only drawback is no headphone jack and the amp doesn't play as well on very low volume. Not recomended for quiet practice. That can be circumvented with a pre-amp and unplugging the speaker. The Haze rocks with classic crunch and tone. There is no substitute for Marshall!

Just Buy It!

By Brian

from Pasadena Maryland

Tube Tone and pleanty of power. I got mine at GC Glen Burnie 7.10.09 & 1st play at my house 3/4 way up in OD channel left many a crooked picture to straighten up. Yep it's a Marshall allright. Great feedback & sustain at even moderate volume. The tone shines thru from every axe I plug into it, and I got 6. It's very reactive to pick attack and volume. I haven't had this much fun with an amp since my 80's band days with a 100w super lead 1/2 stack. I love the fact that it fits in the back seat of my Mustang too. Well enough said...I gotta go play it some more!

Marshall Haze Rocks

By David Lichoff

from Norwalk, Ohio

I just purchased the Marshall Haze 40wat Combo and I have to say it kicks serious butt. It has an absolutely fantasic tone for the classic style rock sush as Bad Company and the mighty Led Zeppelin. The tone is not made for metal styles especially Nu-Metal, stick with the DSL 100 stacks for that. Blues styles just sing with the crunch and definition this amp puts out. I purchased this amp for ease in carry to my gigs and the simple set up of the controls. The people at Marshall out did themselves with this amp. Great job!!!!!!!!!

Great amp at a great price!

By ZERO

from Houston, Texas

so i picked up the haze 40 this weekend during the memorial day holiday at i couldn't be more pleased. for the price point, this is a fantastic amp that gets you the marshall tone you want at a great price. i did the the lowest reviewer state that he a problem with a loud "popping" when he switched his pedals on. i had the same problem but it was because the battery on my pickups (EMG 81/85) was dead. battery changed, problem solved. absolutely no clicking/popping from pedals (BOSS, DUNLOP, MXR) or from the from the footswitch. the amp has a great clean tone, imo, which can be roughed up (if desired)by adjusting the gain. the bright and the boost switch really give the clean channel some pop and diversity to the sound. the overdrive is great as well. with the boost off it's a great crunch that gives you a myriad of sounds - and adding the boost with the gain pegged gets you a screaming lead tone. adding an OD pedal on top worked really well too with no feedback or problems. highly recommend if you're interested in getting a marshall, or if you need marshall's sound/tone in a more portable format.

This one's a keeper

By Greg

from Shelton, CT

Brought in my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe to Guitar Center for a trade in. I always thought it was a bit raspy sounding (had it for about 1 year). I sat it side by side with the Haze 40 and switched back forth between the two amps. I heard immediately that the Haze 40 sound was better - smoother, sweeter, fuller sounding. I need a compact amp, easy to transport with kick in the a-- sound - and I got it! I waited until I played it out before I wrote this review. I used to own a vintage 1971 Marshall 50 watt head (never should have parted with it) and this amp easily rivals that sound (and at lower volumes). The effects are excellent (I love the digital delay). The vibe/phaser effect is great too. The only drawback that I have found is that you cannot combine effects (delay+chorus for instance). I look at this as a minor annoyance compared to what I got for a great price. I have read some reviews that say this amp does not have enough gain. I have to assume that these complaints are from some Strat players. My LP sings with feedback whenever I want it to!

Finally . . . THE Sound!!!

By RevAlton

from Columbus, OH

I picked up the Marshall "Haze" amp yesterday at G.C. and WOW!! Big sound for a small amp. The built in effects aren't bad for built-ins but prefer my outboard pedals. I've been searching for a bedroom Eric Johnson type sound. I put my Vox "Satcherator" in front, played with the knobs a bit, and BINGO!! "Cliffs of Dover" never sounded so good with my Strat . . . sound led me to further E.J. style improve in the zone! I've got a lot more fiddling to do but so far I think Marshall nailed it with this amp. Thanks, Jim!

This amp is just the ticket!!!

By Jaszbo Christus

from Peoria, IL

First off, I'm going to give this amplifier an A+++. It had every tone I needed. I was just checking it out at GC here in Peoria IL today, and it definitely put all of the others to shame among 1x12 combo units. I have been trying out the Line 6 Spider Valve MKII, the Egnater Rebel Thirty, and the different Fender tube amps. Dollar for dollar, this amplifier is the real McCoy. I have been playing for 33+ years (34 in June of this year, 2010), and never has it been easier to immediately dial in my favorite tones. This thing sounds like Eric Johnson's stack. You get the real nice, singing violin-like sustain on the overdrive channel, and I was able to get real clear, glassy clean tones. Within the next year, I am going to be purchasing a combo unit to practice and perform with, and this will definitely, God be willing, be the one. I played my Schecter C-1 classic though it, and I was immensely pleased. 7 "Hallelujahs!"

Marshall Haze Just "Rocks"

By David J. Lichoff

from Norwalk, Ohio

The Marshall Haze absolutely rocks. It has one the best vintage Marshall tones for all of those great classic rock songs. I have gigged with this amp and it works just great on stage in a band setting. I have not had any problems with stage volume or tone. Just keep in mind this amp is not a "metal" amp. I use my 800 series half-stack for that style of music. The built in effects are really good and they are an extra plus as I only need a wah-pedal and a clean boost/volume pedal to complete my setup. I think anyone looking for the pure Marshall tone who does not want to spend the money for high dollar vintage equipment, would do themselves right by grabbing one of these amps.

Haze Rocks!

Great quality. Great sound, especially for the price. Looks cool. Portable size and fairly light. And this baby cranks! If you're looking for Marshall sound and don't want to pay an arm and a leg, the Haze is the right choice. I bought the combo version and I couldn't be more satisfied.

Oh wow

By friedpizza

from lawton, ok

I love this amp! Ive only heard it on the video cause our guitar center didnt have them yet. Im debating between an ac15 custom classic and this. And im thinking marshall. My friend has an MG Half through a PRS custom 22 and it sounds amazing. Marshall sure knew what they were doing. Thanks for bringing marshall tube tone to the average teenager who hardly ever has any money.

So awesome

By Max

from finland

I needed a new amp, because i had Roland Microcube 15w and i truly hate it, but i went to G.C and tryed out the Marshall Haze, god i love it. I own a Vox wah-wah pedal and a Zakk Wylde Signature Wah, and they both sounded truly epic through that amp. Clean channel ain't so good, but the overdrive, GOD I LOVE IT! With boost it is very good, so I recommend this amp for everyone who plays music like Guns n' Roses, Skid Row, M_tley Cr_e etc. If you want a small amp with great sound, this is your choice.

Nightmare

By Bert Pagano

from Albany, NY

I have had one Marshall prior to this and was generally dissatisfied as after a year the amp began to experience ongoing repair issues. This amp proved my distrust in Marshall - 3, I repeat 3 amps bought and returned. 2 died on the gig(always does wonders for your attitude and performance) and one with a broken bright switch. Avoid this at all costs.

The perfect amp for anyone

By John Smith

from Ann Arbor, MI

bought this amp about three months ago, it was a change from a tiny fender g-dec to this big combo and now there is no tone i cant acheive. with the effects and the overdrive channel you get some killer tone and you can also push it over the edge with the boost. one problem due to noise ordinances i cant get to my favorite tone because there's not an overall volume control but otherwise i couldn't be more pleased, if it's in your price range and you need a new amp for small gigs and what not, THIS IS YOUR TICKET TO TONEVILLE!!!!!!

Tube Amps Like Never Before

By Guccione2

from S.F. California

I have played using many amps, but none like this! Fender, Egnater, and Pevey are usually my go-to's for tube amps, but i demoed this one at guitar center, and i was just blown away. All the power expected of a Marshall, with the smooth sound and tone of any other tube. It's best features are boostable clean and overdrive settings, built in reverb and depth, and, best of all, the GAIN. this amp can push much harder than some of the others that i have tried, and adding some other FX will enhanse the experiance even more! An awesome buy!

Outstanding amp

By Sean

from San Antonio, TX

I had checked this amp out several times while I was guitar shopping each time I would use the Haze as I wanted to see the guitar I was looking at sound through the amp I was going to own down the road. I picked up my haze about 3 weeks ago and couldnt be happier with its performance. I suffer no load popping noise when switching between channels as a preivious reviewer stated.

Bought one of the first Haze combos, loved the sound. The amp really nails that classic rock sound I was looking for! Noticed some problems, channel switching made a popping sound!,and when you played awhile the volume and tone seemed to loose something!Anyway Marshall makes a kit to fix these problems/the amp is in for repair. At least Marshall is addressing this problem and fixing there product!Im patiently waiting for my Haze to return fixed!

1 year down the road

By jeff stiles

from windsor, on, canada

i have one. its been a year and a labour of love. i only use the clean channel. turned up to about 4 (11 o' clock) it starts to sound like the class 5 cranked all the way. that classic marshall sound. its really loud even for small to med sized clubs but the tone doesn't present itself until you hit 4 (11 o' clock) on the volume making it definitely too loud for home. i'd like to see the class 5 offered as a class 15. i suppose i could just down size to the haze 15 though. all that said, i love the clean channel turned up. and with a boost pedal to get some gain and punch. i get that tube saturation everyone loves and my notes are still distinct. this amp does have that pop sound when switching channels, though i dont switch channels. they say there is a kit to fix it and is available as a warranty claim. also, bec of the way the tubes sit they are very prone to vibration and once this occurs they can become loose and burn out. i have replaced one of the tubes twice in a year. access to the tubes is a total pain. you must take all 11 screws out of the back to get to them. in order to see what your doing, you'll need to pop the cooling vent out of the top. i leave it popped so i can check for tube looseness before i play. channel 2 on this amp has a different voice and i dont use it. its weaker. i think all the stuff effects etc in the way of the signal hinders the output tone. channel 1, turned up has a sweet and ballsier tone. overall, this is a fine tube amp for the money. marshall tone is un mistakeable and unmatchable but there are always trade-offs. i'm interested in seeing what mystery amp is coming out oct 1st.
