An homage to ‘90s Marshall tone.

The Marshall DSL-1H 1W tube guitar amp head is part of Marshall’s 50th Anniversary celebration. Even though there were several popular Marshalls in the ‘90s, the JCM2000 DSL100 Dual Super Lead became a truly iconic tone of the decade. Critics hailed it as “the ultimate Marshall” as it straddled past and present so well. The DSL-1H’s dual footswitchable channels pay tonal tribute to that great amp. Featuring Classic Gain and Ultra Gain options with switches for Deep and Tone Shift for further sonic flexibility, just like the original. An output with speaker emulation, FX loop and Low Power (0.1W) switch add even more flexibility.

Marshall DSL1 50th Anniversary '90s Era 1W Tube Guitar Amp Head Features:

  • Authentic DSL (Dual Super Lead) tone
Two Footswitchable channels – Classic Gain and Ultra Gain
Tone Shift button which reconfigures the mids
Deep button which adds a resonant bass boost
Independent Volume and Gain controls for both channels

Speaker-Emulated Line Output on rear panel

I had been looking for a low wattage tube amp but all of them either sounded mediocre, or were too expensive for what you were getting. Comes along the DSL-1H. It has a crazy amount of features way beyond any of the 1 watters (bass, mid, treble, mid scoop, bass boost, effects loop, two channels, footswitch, speaker simulated recording out.) It sound fabulous. I have been playing it for 4 months now and I am still just as excited as the night I bought it. To be fair, I tried the rest of the 50th Anniversaries (except JVM-1H), and wondered why those ones are not much cheaper than the DSL-1H. They were fine, but not nearly as easy to get a good sound since they lacked many of the features. Those other ones would need some boutique overdrive pedals to sound great, but not the DSL-1H.

  • Stock tubes = very bright a 2, after retube = 5

Apparently Marshall figured these would likely be bought be tube rollers anyway so they stuck some not so great tubes in there. If I read the codes correctly they are 2 x no mfgr white label 12AU7s and 3 x Shuguang/chinese 12AX7s. "no mfg whiter label" speaks for itself as far as quality, and I know some folks like the chinese stuff but I'm not one of them. With the stock tubes this amp is very bright and does not sound anything like it's big brother, likely why you still find them along with the JVM but the JMP and JCM are impossible. Anyway, after swapping out the 12AX7s for some TungSols, then some genelex/GL and swapping in the EH 12AU7s this little amp has completely changed character. It is now the amp I hoped it would be. Granted I did have to spend some money on tubes but I got it cheap on clearance, cheaper than any I've seen on ebay, so it was well worth it. I know, 2 channels on a 1 watt amp!? but it does actually come in handy for late night/wife's napping playing time. Of course now I am in search of JTM, JMP1 and JCM...
